Darlene will steal your heart, and maybe your man, just because she can 😀 Well, her name's Darlene, not Jolene, but she outshines every other dog around her and will become everyone's favorite girl. Darlene is the happiest, most carefree pup. She loves to play with every dog no matter what size, she doesn't get fussy with other dogs, even when they get fussy with her, and she loves her humans. She's not quite your shadow, but close, and like all great pitties, she loves to be in your lap, sitting on your feet, or snuggled right up next to you.

When Darlene was found in a field off a dirt road last year, she was so emaciated, she couldn't stretch out straight. All that is behind her now, and she is LOVING LIFE!

Darlene loves a car ride and chewing on sticks. She's good in her crate and riding in the car. She needs work on a leash but otherwise she's just about perfect. You'll find yourself absent-mindedly rubbing her soft ears, and she has such soft fur, especially for a pittie.

If you've ever thought about giving a pittie a try, she's a great one to start with. Just remember, she has that pittie enthusiasm and will come in like a wrecking ball!

Mama Francis (AKA: Maple)

She didn’t have a name for most of her life, just having litter after litter… surviving the only way she knew how.

A kind stranger had been feeding her and discovered she had puppies under an old house. He rescued the whole family, including Mama Francis' older daughter, Ginny.

Now Mama is safe. And for the first time, she’s learning what it means to just be a dog and looking for a patient, low-key person or family to give her all the love she’s missed for so many years.

This 5–year-old lady is about 45 pounds of quiet love. She isn’t a flight risk, but she’s still figuring out the world and prefers to find a quiet place when things feel overwhelming. Leashes are new. Trust is something she builds day by day.

She’s been in a dedicated foster home, learning all the good things—living peacefully with other dogs, cats, kids, and even chickens. She doesn’t ask for much. Honestly, she doesn’t know how to.

She has been undergoing slow-kill heartworm treatment, and we would love for her to stay local to Alabama so she can continue receiving full support as she adjusts. Everyone at Dixie Girl cares deeply for her and will continue providing her medical care through the end of her treatment.

Her babies—Maybelline, L’Oréal, and MAC—have all found their happy ever after. Now it’s Mama’s turn. She’s just waiting for someone to choose her and give her the life she’s never had.

Flynn is a 4-year-old Lab/Great Pyrenees mix who is ready to find the family he can love forever! This handsome boy has the sweetest personality and is the kind of dog who makes himself right at home wherever he goes. 🐾

Flynn is playful, affectionate, friendly, and incredibly lovable. He enjoys being around his people and would make an amazing addition to a family. He is wonderful with children, gets along well with other dogs, and is good with cats, making him a great fit for a variety of homes.

And there’s even more to love—Flynn is fully potty trained! He’s ready to skip the puppy stage and settle right into family life. ❤️

🚨 **WE ARE DESPERATE FOR FOSTERS. PLEASE HELP US SAY YES.** 🚨

Two shelters have reached out asking Dixie Girl for help. We desperately want to say **YES** but we cannot do it without somewhere for them to go.

They didn't ask for this. Society failed them. We're hoping the good people in our community will help us make it right.

DAMON — 1 year old | 78 lbs | Male Rottweiler
Another ridiculously good boy. Damon is also sweet, calm, dog friendly and heartworm negative. Look at that face! He also loves cuddles and needs somewhere for that head to rest.

DERRIN — 3 years old | 83 lbs | Male Rottweiler
This big, beautiful boy is sweet, calm, dog friendly and heartworm negative. And his favorite place for that giant Rottie head is in your hand or directly in your lap.

COOKIE - 2 years old | Female | 44 llbs.
Cookie is the adorable white girl with little black freckles. She's dog friendly, heartworm negative and playful with other pups, we have her dog test video!
Cookie doesn't sell herself well from behind kennel bars but outside the kennel, she's a different dog.

**AND THEN THERE ARE THESE FOUR BABIES.**
Another shelter reached out about four young, possibly Pyr-mix puppies with mange. Yes, they look a little rough right now but their mange is NOT contagious. It's already being treated, treatment is simple. They're young and timid, but they open up with time and kindness. They just need somewhere safe to do it.

We can handle the rescue part. **We need you to provide the HOME part.**
Fosters and foster-to-adopts should be in the **Birmingham area OR willing to drive to our veterinary partners.**

Dixie Girl provides all approved vetting and supplies. You provide a safe place to land, transportation to vet appointments, and some love while we work on finding their forever family.

Meet Bernie!

Bernie is a 4-year-old, 70 lb Pit Bull mix with a happy spirit and a big love for people. This good boy is housebroken, crate trained, and perfectly content living the indoor life where he can be close to his humans. Bernie absolutely adores people and does great with kids—he’s the kind of dog who’s always excited to see you and ready to join in whatever the family is doing.

Bernie has a playful personality and enjoys a good rough-and-tumble play session. Because of his energetic play style, he would do best with a laid-back female dog who doesn’t mind a little roughhousing, or he’d also be perfectly happy soaking up all the attention as the only dog in the home. He previously lived with an older, confident female Lab and got along with her just fine.

One thing to know about Bernie—cats are a little too interesting to him, so a cat-free home is best.

🐾 **PET TIP THURSDAY: YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO LIKE EVERY DOG.**

Somewhere along the way, we decided a “good dog” should happily greet, play with, and befriend every dog they meet.

**That's not realistic and it's not necessary.**
Think about people. You probably don't want to hug every stranger at Target, become best friends with every coworker, or have someone you've never met run directly into your personal space. Your dog doesn't either. 😂

Some dogs LOVE other dogs. Some enjoy a few carefully chosen friends. Some prefer to coexist without playing. And some would be perfectly happy if another dog never invaded their bubble again. **All of those dogs can be good dogs.**

The goal doesn't have to be *“My dog loves everyone!”* A much better goal is often **neutrality.**
🐾 Can your dog pass another dog on a walk without losing their mind?
🐾 Can they see another dog across the park and continue sniffing?
🐾 Can they listen to you when another dog is nearby?
🐾 Can they comfortably exist in the world without needing to greet every dog they see?

**That's success.**

In fact, forcing interactions can create problems where there weren't any before. On-leash greetings, crowded dog parks, letting an overly excited dog rush another dog because *“He's friendly!”* or repeatedly putting an uncomfortable dog into social situations can turn uncertainty into fear, frustration, or reactivity.

And if your dog tells you they're uncomfortable? **Listen.** Creating distance isn't failure. Skipping the dog park isn't antisocial. Saying “please don't let your dog approach mine” isn't rude. It's advocating for the dog on the other end of your leash.

Of course, sudden aggression or major changes in your dog's tolerance should always be taken seriously and may warrant a vet visit and help from a qualified trainer. But simply preferring space? **Your dog doesn't need dog friends. They need dog skills.**

A dog who can calmly exist around other dogs without interacting with them is doing just fine. ❤️🐾

If you’re looking for a loyal best friend, Chevy may be the perfect match for your family!

Chevy is a beautiful 4-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever with a sweet, gentle personality and so much love to give. She gets along wonderfully with children, other dogs, and even small animals, making her an easy addition to many different types of homes.

This lovely girl enjoys spending time with her people, whether it’s going for walks, playing outside, or simply relaxing by your side. She’s great on a leash and does well in a fenced yard, although she does have a bit of a wandering spirit, so she’ll need a securely fenced yard or to always be on a leash when outdoors.

Chevy is crate trained and settles in nicely. Her absolute favorite thing? Belly rubs! Chevy will happily roll over for as much love and attention as you’re willing to give.

🚨 **COOPER IS BEING RETURNED — AND WE NEED A PLACE FOR HIM BY WEDNESDAY.** 🚨

Through absolutely **no fault of his own**, sweet Cooper is coming back into rescue, and right now we have a gap we desperately need help filling.

🏡 **IMMEDIATE NEED:** Someone who can keep Cooper from **Wednesday through Friday.**

❤️ **EVEN BETTER:** A long-term foster in **Arlington, Virginia or the surrounding area** who can give Cooper somewhere stable to land while we find his actual happily ever after.

Can you give him a couch for a couple of days until our adoption transport can swing by and bring him back to AL? **That helps.**
Can you foster him until he's adopted? **Even better.**

Cooper is a handsome black-and-tan Shepherd mix who is a wonderful combination of playful, adventurous, and ridiculously affectionate. He loves exploring, playing with toys, and being part of whatever his people are doing.

And when the day is over? Cooper becomes a **giant lap dog.** He wants to curl up as close to his person as physically possible and soak up all the love.
