Happy Lab(or) Day, Bham Fam!

Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing, and happy Labor Day!

Our hospital and resort are closed today, but our team is on-site making sure all of our boarding guests are happy, comfortable, and well cared for.

We’ll be back to normal business hours tomorrow!

HOLIDAY WEEKEND HOURS

Our hospital will be closed today through Monday and will reopen with normal business hours on Tuesday.

Our Resort will be open for PICK-UPS & DROP-OFFS ONLY during the following times:

Saturday: 8:00–10:00 AM
Sunday: 4:00–6:00 PM
Monday: CLOSED

Don’t worry — while our doors may be closed, our team will still be on site throughout the weekend and holiday taking care of all of our boarding guests!

We hope our Bham Fam has a safe and happy Labor Day weekend! We’ll see you Tuesday!

ROGER IS HOME SAFE!

We wanted to make a new post just in case anyone missed the update on our original one — Roger is back home safe and sound!

Thank you SO much to everyone who shared the post, kept an eye out, and helped spread the word. His family is incredibly relieved to have this sweet boy back where he belongs.

MISSING DOG — PLEASE SHARE

Bham Fam, we need your help bringing Roger home!

Roger belongs to one of our BAHR team members and went missing from his family’s fenced-in yard near Overton Road and Liberty Park. He was outside with the family’s other two dogs, who are still safely at home, but Roger is nowhere to be found. This is very out of character for him, and his family is incredibly worried.

Roger is a Westie and is microchipped. He went missing from Millstone Road off Overton Road, near the Liberty Park exit, just past the goat farm and near Integrated Behavioral Health.

If you live or work in this area, please check your yards, garages, doorbell cameras and security footage. If you happened to pick Roger up thinking he was lost or were trying to keep him safe, please contact us. We just want to get him home to his family.

Please share this post, especially with anyone in the Overton Road, Liberty Park, Cahaba Heights and surrounding areas. Even the smallest piece of information could help.

MEDICAL MONDAY: What exactly does a Veterinary Technician do?

If you’ve ever wondered who is behind the scenes taking care of your pet alongside our doctors, chances are, it’s one of our veterinary technicians.

Vet techs are a HUGE part of your pet’s medical team. On any given day, you may find them:

• Drawing blood and running lab work
• Taking X-rays
• Monitoring anesthesia during surgery
• Assisting with dental procedures
• Placing IV catheters and administering medications
• Caring for hospitalized and recovering patients
• Helping in emergencies
• Educating and reassuring pet parents
• And giving plenty of extra love when a patient needs it most

They are part nurse, part phlebotomist, part anesthetist, part dental assistant, part lab tech, part patient advocate — and somehow still find time to love on your pets like they’re their own.

And right now, we’re looking for another great Veterinary Technician to join our team!

It’s Medical Monday — and today also happens to be Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Black cats may be known for their sleek coats and mysterious reputation, but when it comes to their health, there’s nothing mysterious about what they need: routine veterinary care.

Cats are experts at hiding pain and illness, which means subtle changes can sometimes be the only clue that something isn’t right. Regular wellness exams give us the chance to catch problems early — often before your cat ever acts sick.

Keep an eye out for changes in:

* Appetite or water intake
* Weight
* Litter box habits
* Grooming
* Activity level
* Hiding or other behavior
* Bad breath or difficulty eating

And don’t forget: indoor cats need routine veterinary care, too!

Medical Monday: Taking the Stress Out of Vet Visits for Cats

Does getting your cat to the vet feel like an Olympic event? The hiding. The carrier battle. The very angry car ride. We get it.

A little preparation can make a HUGE difference for both you and your cat.

Choose the right carrier.
We recommend a sturdy, hard-sided carrier with a top that can be easily removed. This allows our team to examine nervous cats in the bottom half of their carrier when possible instead of pulling them out through a small door.

Leave the carrier out at home.
Don’t let the carrier only appear when it’s time for the vet. Leave it open in a familiar area with a soft blanket, treats, or favorite toy inside so your cat can start viewing it as a safe space instead of a warning sign.

Make it smell familiar.
Place familiar bedding or a towel inside. You can also use Feliway on the carrier and bedding before leaving home. Give it time to dry before putting your cat inside.

Skip the carrier chase.
If your cat is difficult to load, a top-loading or removable-top carrier can make things much easier. Sometimes placing your cat in hind-end first is also less stressful than trying to push them through the front opening.

Cover the carrier for travel.
A lightweight towel or blanket over the carrier can help reduce overwhelming sights and sounds. Always keep the carrier secure and level in the car — never let your cat ride loose.

Ask us for help BEFORE the appointment.
For cats who become extremely fearful or stressed during travel or veterinary visits, there may be medications we can prescribe to give at home before the appointment. Don’t wait until you’re already struggling to get them out the door — call us ahead of time so we can help make a plan.

At Birmingham Animal Hospital + Resort, we want veterinary visits to be as comfortable as possible for our feline patients. A calmer trip to the vet starts long before you pull into our parking lot.

And remember: if getting your cat here is the hardest part, tell us. We’re happy to help you figure out what will work best for your cat.
