A dying Bernese Mountain Dog got to enjoy one last snow day thanks to a community coming together to help her. Brooke had only days left to live, but her family wanted to give their beloved dog one last chance to enjoy something she loved dearly, snow.

The 11½-year-old dog had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and wasn’t going to make it until winter. Knowing how much she loved lying in the snow, her family turned to Reddit for help.

Her “fur-dad,” redditor Canadianbuilt, posted an unusual request to a Calgary subreddit, asking if anyone knew of a rink or another place with a pile of snow where Brooke could enjoy one final snow day.

Hundreds of people responded—and one person knew exactly how to help. They worked at an ice rink and quickly stepped in. Soon, the family was on their way to Bowness Sportsplex.

“Follow up from the hunt for snow,” Canadianbuilt wrote. “The amazing guys at Bowness Sportsplex immediately started dumping their snow outside for us.”

And Brooke got her final snow day.

Sadly, it would be her last. “She passed away a few hours after getting her last snow fix,” her family later shared.

After returning home, Brooke was carried onto the shady front lawn, where she spent her final hours surrounded by the people who loved her.

“After we got back from laying on the snow, my girlfriend carried her out of the truck and onto the lawn on the front yard where it was nice and shady, and she loved to hang out so much,” Canadianbuilt shared. “She laid there for a few hours while we said our goodbyes, and she gave us kisses, and then she went. I cried like I’ve never cried before […]”

“Rest well, Brooke,” her family wrote. “We won’t forget you.”

Thanks to a community of strangers—and the kind people at an ice rink—Brooke got to spend her final day doing something she loved, surrounded by the people she loved most.

And when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge, she was not alone. ❤️🐾❄️

The village of Dunnington sits a few miles east of York, close enough that the No. 10 bus runs into the city center and back through the day. For several years one of its regular passengers was a Jack Russell terrier called Ratty, who would come down to the stop on his own, wait in the queue with everybody else, and step aboard when the doors opened.

The drivers knew him, which is the only reason any of this worked. He never caused trouble, never had to be removed, and traveled the route often enough that letting him on became easier and more sensible than not letting him on, so he rode into York like a commuter with somewhere to be.

He did have somewhere to be, because Ratty went straight to the Black Bull, a pub where the staff had set aside a water bowl for him and where sausages appeared without his having to do anything to earn them, and he'd spend the afternoon there among the drinkers. The arrangement for getting home was equally settled, because at closing time one of the barmaids would put him in her car and run him back out to Dunnington, and on the days she wasn't working his owner made the trip into the city instead.

The local paper wrote him up in 2006, and after that he appeared on television, which turned a village curiosity into a minor Yorkshire celebrity. The one disruption to the routine came when the Black Bull changed hands and the new owner banned dogs from the premises, and Ratty responded by walking to the Rose and Crown nearby and starting again there.

He died in 2010, and in Dunnington they still talk about the dog who took the bus to the pub.

In 1957, one of the most famous artists who ever lived was completely outshone in his own home by a small black and tan dachshund named Lump. 🎨 The real Pablo Picasso, photographed here as himself in his French Riviera studio and not an actor or impersonator, fell so hard for this little dog that Lump moved in and quietly took over the house.

Lump belonged, at least on paper, to the photographer David Douglas Duncan, but the dachshund took one look at Picasso's sun-filled villa and decided he was home. Picasso fed him by hand, let him wander among priceless canvases, and famously said the dog was not a dog, not a little man, but somebody else entirely. Lump even trotted his way into Picasso's art, appearing in his reinterpretations of Las Meninas.

It is a story that says something true about the breed. Dachshunds have a genius for attaching themselves to exactly the person they intend to keep, and for making that person believe it was their idea all along. A world-renowned genius bent his household around a stubborn little hound, and by every account he considered it a fair trade.

Somewhere in the history of great art there is a smug dachshund who knew precisely what he was doing. 🐾
