Meet the Bantams! ๐
Check out these adorable Bantam chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) enjoying some snack time at the Ross Park Zoo!
While standard domestic chickens can be quite large, Bantams are a smaller variety prized by keepers around the worldโespecially where space is limited. Weighing in at just 1 to 2.5 pounds, they might be small in stature, but they are packed with personality!
The zoo is home to four female bantam chickens named Mindy, Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup.
As omnivores, they happily munch on a mix of grains, produce, and insects.
Chickens were first domesticated from the wild Red Junglefowl in Southeast Asia roughly 8,000 years ago.
You can visit Mindy, Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup in our Barnyard on your next zoo visit. We're open daily from 10 am to 4 pmn with our last admission at 3 pm.
