Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a community where every animal is cared for.

Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter (YVAS) is the largest-volume shelter in Montana; caring for thousands of lost & transitioning animals every year. We have made many changes over the years, ever-evolving to provide the best care for animals and the people of the Billings community. Our current shelter programs include reuniting lost pets with their owners, adoption, foster care, volunteer, outreach & education, low-cost spay & neuter clinics, and our life-saving Working Cat Program. For more information about the shelter, please visit our website at www.yvas.org.

🐭❄️ COLD WEATHER IS COMING… Don't let the mice move in!

As temperatures drop, mice and other unwanted critters start looking for warm places to spend the winter. Your barns, shops, sheds, and outbuildings are looking pretty cozy right about now.

Luckily, we've got a whole crew of professional pest control specialists ready to clock in!

🐾 Experienced mouse pawtrol officers
🐾 Willing to work nights and weekends
🐾 No awkward office small talk required
🐾 Fully vetted and ready for their new jobs
🐾 Adoption fee: FREE!

Our cattery is at cat-pacity, so we have MANY working cats urgently looking for a place to call home! These independent felines aren't necessarily interested in being lap cats, but they'd love a safe barn, shop, or outbuilding where they can put their natural hunting instincts to work.

All they ask in return is daily food, fresh water, warm shelter, and a little job security. ❤️

Don't wait until the mice move in. Hire your winter pest patrol today!

⭐️UPDATE: As always we are overwhelmed by the love and support of this community! In just a couple days we’ve raised enough money to get Loch started on his road to recovery!

For those of you not familiar with this sweet face, this is Loch-ness. Loch-ness came into our care early October and has had quite the medical journey with us. Loch is a truly gentle giant who adores kids, other dogs, and every person he has ever met. Plain and simple, Loch-ness is a board-certified Good Boy.

Sadly, Loch is a victim of heartworm, a serious disease caused by a parasitic worm that lives in the blood and other organs of an infected animal. Heartworm is commonly found in warm climates, such as Texas, which is where Loch was originally diagnosed with the disease. Heartworm requires an in-depth treatment plan, including a myriad of dewormers, medications, and a lifelong management plan.

Thankfully, we found that Loch-ness is still in Stage 1 of this disease, meaning that it can still be treated, and this boy has a chance to live a long, happy, and healthy life with his new family.

But we need your help. Loch’s heartworm treatment is extensive, and it is not cheap. The cost of his care includes an assortment of prescriptions, bloodwork, and lifelong medication and management that would have cost his adopters up to $2,000-$4,000 at a usual vet clinic. This cost is being covered entirely by YVAS out of pocket.

So, Loch-ness and YVAS need our community's help.

As Loch steps into a new chapter of his life with his forever family, we are asking our compassionate community for support. Every dollar donated will go directly towards covering the cost of Loch’s heartworm treatment, and to the care of other animals like Loch who seek out their own second chance.

If you are considering making a donation, visit https://yvas.org/donate-support/ or contact [email protected] for more information. Your support means the world to us, and other good boys like Loch.

🐾 Happy Vet Tech Appreciation Week! 🐾

A lot of what our vet techs do happens behind the scenes.

You don't see the tech who sits on the floor and snuggles a scared animal.
You don't see the extra treats slipped their way after a hard day.
You don't see the toys brought out to make a stressful experience a little more fun.
You don't see the gentle voice, the reassuring pets, or the extra few minutes spent helping an animal feel safe.

In the shelter, oftentimes our vet techs become the person an animal has when their person isn't there.

They hold them when they're frightened.
Comfort them when they're hurting.
Celebrate their tiny healing victories.
Learn their quirks and personalities.
And make sure they know they're cared for—even on the days when everything around them feels unfamiliar.

Being a vet tech isn't just about knowing medicine. It's about having a big heart, endless patience, and the ability to care for animals who can't tell you what's wrong.

To our vet techs: thank you for all of the things people see—and especially for all the things they don't. ❤️

Successful and sustainable animal sheltering takes a village, and we're so proud to be a part of an amazing nationwide network of animal welfare experts! Last week we welcomed two of our friends from the ASPCA to come see our temporary facility, share their expertise and help us make the most with what we have until our permanent home can be built.

Rachel from the ASPCA's Cruelty Recovery Center works to support animals and communities impacted from large scale disaster cases and is highly experienced in building the best and safest temporary shelter setups for large amounts of animals.

Kay from the ASPCA's Northern Tier Shelter Initiative has worked with YVAS over the past several years, helping to advise on the best and most sustainable improvements to the shelter and our practices, as well as providing support through grant application processes and implementation.

Rachel and Kay spent time with our team helping us learn how to best utilize the temporary facility we’re currently working out of — finding ways to make the space as safe, efficient, and comfortable as possible for the animals in our care. In just two days this team accomplished so much, rearranging most areas of the shelter to provide better work flow, arrange more sound barriers to keep the shelter as Fear Free as possible, and creating more useable space. They also left us with feasible plans for making our dog housing at Jellison more secure and creating additional indoor meet and greet areas.

We’re incredibly grateful to Rachel and Kay for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our team and for the continued support and partnership from the ASPCA. 💚

No matter what space we’re working in, our commitment to the animals doesn’t change. We’ll continue making the very best of what we have today while always continuing to look for ways to do better tomorrow. 🐾
