There is always a bitter sweetness to the end of winter and quiet hints of the beginning of spring, especially this year with low snowfall and so much winter warmth. As gardeners, we withdraw and rest the same way our garden does in the winter months, alive but under the surface, biding our time, preparing for the long days of work in stillness. These days are just as important as the 10pm harvests in early July, chasing the day’s final light as we gather armfuls of harvest. Each season is beautiful in its own way, and while I’ve wished for more snow, I know Nature always has her say. She will challenge us and break us, she will give of herself and yield miraculous abundance. We play a small role. We wait, we work, we watch.

Thankful this winter for a few ski days, including this powder day , for lots of writing (alone, with other women, and teaching / writing alongside kids and teens), for a trip to see family where the grass is green all winter, and for the quiet, dark moments at home.
