🐾 WHAT WE FEED OUR LABRADORS 🐾
One of the questions we get from puppy families is “What food do you recommend?”
After raising Labradors for over 10 years, and trying MANY different brands and formulas over the years, this is the food we have ultimately settled on for our dogs:
❤️ Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice
Puppies stay on the Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice formula until they are approximately 12 months old.
Then we transition them to:
❤️ Diamond Naturals Large Breed Adult Lamb Meal & Rice
We have tried multiple brands and formulas over the years, and this is the one we have found works best across our dogs. We like how our dogs do on it, how they maintain their weight and condition, their coats, digestion and overall appearance.
The puppy formula is specifically formulated for large-breed growth and meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for growth of large-size dogs. Diamond also includes calcium/phosphorus for developing bones and joints, DHA, L-carnitine and probiotics.
The adult formula is specifically formulated for large breeds and includes ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support, along with omega fatty acids and probiotics.
🐔 Why lamb instead of chicken?
Over the last few years, we’ve had dogs that developed sensitivities to chicken even though they had eaten chicken-based foods previously without a problem.
🌾 Why don’t we feed grain-free?
There has been an ongoing investigation into a potential relationship between certain diets and canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart condition. The FDA has reported that many of the diets involved were grain-free and contained high proportions of peas, lentils and other legumes. The FDA has also emphasized that the exact relationship is complicated and that diet is only one potential factor.
For us, this isn’t just something we read about online. Grandpa Odie experienced the beginning stages of heart failure after starting him on grain free dog food, and that experience changed the way we look at nutrition for our dogs. He did make a full recovery after taking him off from the grain free food. Because of that, we personally choose to feed a grain-inclusive formula.
🐶 So if you’re bringing home one of our puppies…
Our recommendation is simple:
From weaning through approximately 12 months:
➡️ Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice
After approximately 12 months:
➡️ Diamond Naturals Large Breed Adult Lamb Meal & Rice
Please don’t abruptly change your puppy’s food when you bring them home. If you decide to switch foods later, transition gradually over several days.
And of course, every dog is an individual. If your veterinarian recommends a different diet because of a medical condition, follow your veterinarian’s advice.
But if you’re looking for the food our dogs are raised on and the food we recommend starting with, this is it. ❤️
We have tried a LOT of dog food over the years. This is the one we keep coming back to.
