Look at your dachshund's chest. If there is a splash of white there, however small, you are looking at a piece of working history that nobody ever explains. 🐾

The old German hunters who built this breed were not choosing for prettiness. They were choosing for a dog who could be found. A dachshund at work was underground in the dark, or moving through thick cover at last light, and the one part of her a man could actually see from above was her chest and throat as she turned back toward him. A pale patch there caught whatever light was going. Hunters called it the bib, and plenty of them kept it on purpose.

Modern show fashion changed that. A large white patch is a fault in most rings now, and it was quietly bred smaller and smaller until it survives mostly as a coin sized star, or a scatter of white hairs you only find when she rolls over for a belly rub. But it is still there in a great many dachshunds, and it is the last visible trace of a job she has not been asked to do in over a hundred years. ❤️

Have a proper look tonight while she is asleep on her back. Ours has a white star roughly the size of a thumbprint, right in the middle. I am genuinely curious what yours has, and where it sits.
