Making teaser rams to jump-start the cycling in ewes. A teaser ram is a male that has been vasectomized. A vasectomy is the procedure in which the vas deferens are cut and tied to prevent the transport of s***m, thus making him sterile.

Key Reasons to Use Teaser Rams

🐏 The Tam Effect - The sight, smell, and sound of a teaser ram triggers hormonal responses in ewes , stimulating them to begin cycling earlier than they would in their own.

🐏 Synchronized Breeding/Maximizes Conception Rates - By introducing a teaser for 14-21 days prior to turning out fertile rams, a high percentage of ewes will come into estrus at the same time. Teasers also help overcome silent heats in ewes.

🐏 Compact Lambing Season - Synchronization of breeding allows for a tighter lambing season.

🐏 Protection for Breeding Rams - Reduces the work load of fertile breeding rams and their chances of being injured.

🐏 Market - Allows producers to market lambs at a similar size and age.

The procedure is simple and recovery is quick for these rams. Interested in adding teaser rams to your operations? Give us a call! 📞 406.930.3995

It’s that time of year again, calving season is here! Many of you have started and others are enjoying the calm before the calving storm. Make sure you have done a final inventory of supplies to ensure you’re ready for whatever comes your way this season! Here is a list of supplies to help!

•OB sleeves
•OB l**e - J-Lube contraindicated during calving season, especially if a C-Section is an option as it causes fatal peritonitis.
•OB chains and handles - clean thoroughly between uses.
•Calf puller
•Disinfectant and Naval dip- dilute iodine, betadine, or chlorhexadine solution are good choices.
•Colostrum REPLACER - recommended there be a minimum of 100g IgG per dose, it is important a calf gets their first dose within 2 hours of birth, don’t get this confused with colostrum supplement.
•Milk replacer
•Electrolytes
•Bottle and esophageal/tube feeder (recommend 1 for newborn calves and one for sick calves).
•Thermometer - normal temperature is 100-102.5F - seek warming measures when re**al temperature drops below 100F (recommend 1 for newborn calves and one for sick calves).
•Warming system - calf warmer, warm room in the barn/house, warm bath (make sure they are dry, standing, and strong enough be returned to the cow).
•Medications - may include injectable vitamins, injectable and/or intranasal vaccines, and antibiotics.
•Sterile needles and syringes
•Don’t forget your hot coffee!

THE COLD WEATHER IS UPON US! ❄️

Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

There is an outbreak of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus (EHM) infection, horses tested positive following a barrel racing event in Waco, TX. We recommend the following biosecurity precautions for horse owners, especially if your horses have recently traveled to horse shows or were exposed to horses that have traveled:

🐎 Monitor horses for clinical signs:
-fever (take the temperature twice daily, a temperature greater than 101.5 F is considered a fever)
-nasal discharge
-toe-dragging or dog-sitting
-incoordination

🐎 Immediately isolate any horses showing clinical signs. Equine herpesviruses are spread through shared airspace, direct contact, and contaminated caretakers or equipment.

🐎 Implement movement restrictions until the situation is evaluated.

🐎 Increase biosecurity measures that include extensive cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and equipment.

🐎 Make sure your horse is up to date on vaccinations. Just know vaccinations are not preventative for the neurologic form of EHV-1.

🐎 Calk your veterinarian for more information and help developing a biosecurity plan for your horses.
