Dahlias in Montana
For most areas in Montana the dahlias are still blooming, but the first frost has already hit some areas. Frost will kill the foliage of dahlias and that will be the clue that it is time to start the process of storing the tubers.
Once the foliage is wilted, cut the stems down to 2-4 inches above the soil. Leave the tubers in the ground for a week so that their skin becomes tougher and the buds/eyes will be easier to see. Once they are lifted from the soil, remove excess soil.
Store tubers in a place that is going to be above 60 degrees and allow the bulbs to set out for 2-4 weeks, so they dry out.
Once bulbs are dry, store them in a place with a steady temperature between 40-50 degrees in paper bags or boxes. Using paper bags/ boxes allows the air to circulate around the bulbs. If you are packing bulbs in a box, be sure to use newspaper or straw to promote air circulation.

Join us in welcoming Jay Rigler to the Montana 4-H Foundation Board of Directors!

Jay’s 4-H journey began on his family’s cattle ranch in Park County, where he was an active member of the Paradise Experimenters 4-H Club from age nine through 18. During his years in 4-H, he participated in market beef, swine, and sheep projects, served as a 4-H Camp Counselor, and represented Montana as a Teen Ambassador State Officer Leader’s Council Representative, attended Montana 4-H Congress, and traveled to Atlanta for national 4-H Congress in 1999. Leadership, teamwork, and a spirit of service are lessons he credits to his time in 4-H and continue to guide him today.

Today, Jay Rigler is the founder of Practically Independent Advisory Services and serves as a management consultant and strategic advisor. With more than 20 years of experience in financial strategy, analytics, and business consulting, he brings valuable expertise to the Montana 4‑H Foundation Board of Directors. He is especially excited to help strengthen the Foundation's financial processes and long‑term value while giving back to an organization that played such an important role in his youth.

Jay's commitment to service, leadership, and lifelong learning reflects the impact 4‑H can have long after a member's final fair project. His story is a reminder that the lessons learned in 4‑H continue to shape leaders, professionals, and community members for years to come. 💚🍀

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting the incredible leaders who help support Montana 4‑H youth across the state!
