Meet Elenor! Poor girl had a broken leg. After 8 weeks of casting and bandage management, her bones have healed! The owners did a great job keeping the cast clean and doing weekly bandage changes! That type of commitment to an injury is vital for success. Congrats Elenor! Cheers to you!! 🐐🀎

🐾 Dog Allergies: It’s Not Always the Food! 🐾
When your dog is constantly itching, licking, chewing their paws, or getting recurrent ear infections, allergies may be part of the problem. But did you know there can be several different causes?

πŸ— Food/Dietary Allergies
Food allergies are real, but they are not the most common cause of allergies in dogs overall. Approximately 1–2% of dogs seen by veterinarians have a food allergy, while studies of itchy dogs have found food-related reactions in roughly 9–40% of cases, depending on the population studied.

🌿 Environmental Allergies
Pollen, grasses, molds, dust mites, and other environmental allergens can trigger allergic skin disease and may cause problems seasonally or throughout the year.

πŸͺ² Flea Allergies
For some dogs, even a single flea bite can trigger an intense allergic reaction and severe itching.

Unfortunately, allergies are generally managed rather than cured. The goal is to identify and reduce triggers, control inflammation and itching, and keep your pet comfortable.

❀️ Why is allergy management so important?

When allergies aren't controlled, constant scratching, licking, and inflammation can damage the skin and ears. This creates an opportunity for secondary bacterial and yeast infections, which can lead to recurring skin and ear problems.

By properly managing the underlying allergy, we can often reduce the frequency and severity of these secondary infections and improve your pet's quality of life.

🐢 And remember: Research the breed before bringing a dog home.

Some breeds are more predisposed to allergies and chronic skin problems than others. Learn about the breed's potential health concerns, grooming requirements, temperament, and veterinary care needs before making that commitment.

Because owning a dog isn't just a commitment for the puppy years.

🐾 It's a lifelong commitment.

Do your research. Ask questions. Understand the potential health needs. And be prepared to provide the care your pet may need throughout their entire life. ❀️

🚨 Male Cat Urinary Blockages: A Life-Threatening Emergency
Urinary blockage in male cats is a medical emergency. If left untreated, a complete blockage can quickly become life-threatening and cause severe electrolyte abnormalities, kidney injury, and other serious complications.
Treatment often requires hospitalization, IV fluids, medications, and urinary catheterization. In some cases, surgery may be necessary, particularly when stones or recurrent obstruction are involved.

To determine the cause and assess your cat’s overall condition, we may recommend:
🩸 Blood work β€” to evaluate kidney function, electrolytes, and other organ function
🩻 X-rays β€” to look for urinary stones or other potential causes of obstruction
πŸ’§ IV fluids and hospitalization β€” to stabilize your cat and support kidney function

Unfortunately, once a cat has experienced a urinary blockage, there is a risk of recurrence. Each subsequent blockage can make treatment and recovery more complicated.

One of the most important steps in reducing the risk of future episodes is feeding an appropriate urinary prescription diet long-term, often lifelong, as recommended by your veterinarian. Maintaining good hydration and following your veterinarian’s preventive plan are also important.

If your male cat is repeatedly going to the litter box, straining to urinate, crying while attempting to urinate, producing little or no urine, vomiting, becoming lethargic, or hiding, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

A blocked cat cannot wait. Prompt treatment can save a life!
