During the just-concluded Meat Expo 2026, we had the opportunity to meet Mr. Abdi Latif of HCC Kenya — East African Halal Confirmation Center Limited (HCC).

KVPA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT | MEAT EXPO 2026

As we look back on the Kenya Meat Expo 2026, which concluded last Friday, we continue in the spirit of appreciating and celebrating our members working across different fields of practice.

During the Expo, we had the opportunity to meet Joseph Kamau, a KVPA member and Field Extension Officer at Farmer's Choice Limited. Joseph took us through his work and shared how he contributes to the meat value chain through field extension and supporting farmers.

His story is a reminder that Veterinary Paraprofessionals are making a difference in diverse fields, using their knowledge and skills in ways that positively impact animal health, farmers, and the wider livestock industry.

🐄 LET’S TALK DRIVE!

What exactly is DRIVE and why should a pastoralist care?

DRIVE — De-Risking, Inclusion and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies

is a project designed to help pastoralists protect their livestock, manage drought, access finance and earn better income from livestock.

In simple terms, DRIVE helps pastoralists to:

🛡️ Protect livestock against drought and other risks.
💰 Access finance to grow livestock businesses.
🐂 Identify & track animals through ANITRAC, helping fight livestock theft and fraud.
🌾 Prepare for drought through insurance and savings solutions.
📈 Access better markets and participate more profitably in livestock value chains.

The bigger picture is simple:

> Keep livestock alive. Protect pastoralist livelihoods. Improve access to finance. Create better markets. Grow the pastoral economy.

DRIVE is about moving from “surviving drought” to “building a stronger and more resilient livestock business.”

Day 2: Learning About the DRIVE Project 🚜🐄

Day 2 at the Meat Expo Kisii gave us an opportunity to learn more about the DRIVE Project — De-Risking, Inclusion and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies.

In this video, Mr. Tom Kinara, DRIVE Liaison Officer, takes us through what DRIVE is all about and how the project is supporting pastoralist communities through climate resilience, financial inclusion, improved market access and livestock value-chain development.

It was a great learning experience as we explored how initiatives like DRIVE can help build more resilient pastoral economies, better livelihoods and sustainable livestock businesses.

The meat sector plays an important role in Kenya’s food system, economy and livelihoods. From the farm to the consumer, many professionals contribute to ensuring healthy animals, safe food and quality meat.

As Veterinary Para-Professionals, we are also part of this important sector, supporting animal health, farmers and the wider meat value chain.

In this video series, we’ll explore the meat industry, understand the different roles within it, and create awareness about how veterinary professionals contribute to a healthy and sustainable meat sector in Kenya.

KVPA at the 5th Kenya Meat Expo 2026

The 5th Kenya Meat Expo 2026 kicked off today at KICC, bringing together government, private sector leaders, farmers, innovators, investors and other stakeholders to explore how we can build a more competitive, resilient and sustainable meat industry.

The event was graced by Principal Secretary, State Department for Trade, Ms Regina Ombam, who emphasised the importance of a transparent, data-driven value chain and investing in the next generation to drive transformation. She also highlighted the role of young African entrepreneurs and technology-led innovation in strengthening the competitiveness of the meat industry.

Held under the theme “Accelerating Sustainable Growth: Empowering the Next Generation in the Meat Value Chain,” the Expo provides an important platform for stakeholders to engage on partnerships, technology, food safety, quality, market access and value addition across the meat and livestock sector.

For KVPA, being part of these conversations is about learning, connecting and understanding the developments shaping the industry—and bringing relevant knowledge, opportunities and insights back to Veterinary Para-Professionals (VPPs) across Kenya.

As the livestock and meat industry continues to evolve, VPPs must remain informed, connected and ready to take their place in the opportunities emerging across the value chain.

KVPA at the Kenya Meat Expo 2026

The Kenya Veterinary Para-Professionals Association (KVPA) is at the Kenya Meat Expo 2026, taking place from 26th–28th August 2026 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.

We are here to learn, connect and engage with the latest developments shaping Kenya’s meat and livestock value chain.

The Expo brings together researchers, farmers, industry players, innovators, development partners and other stakeholders, creating an important platform for understanding emerging technologies, industry trends, opportunities and the evolving needs of the livestock sector.

For KVPA, this is an opportunity to gather knowledge and industry insights that can be brought back to Veterinary Para-Professionals (VPPs) across the country helping our members stay informed, identify emerging opportunities and better understand their place in the future of the livestock and meat value chain.

We learn from the industry so we can keep our VPPs informed, prepared and connected.

She dared to enter a space no VPP woman had entered before → came remarkably close on her first attempt → refused to let the outcome define her → transformed the momentum into a platform for women VPPs across Kenya.
ROSEBELLA OCHANGO — A WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO BREAK THE CEILING
Some women wait for an opportunity to be created.
Others step forward and create the opportunity for those who will come after them.
Bella is one of them.
In the 2025 Kenya Veterinary Board elections, Bella made history by becoming the first Veterinary Paraprofessional to step forward and vie for the Veterinary Paraprofessional representative position on the Kenya Veterinary Board — opening a door that had never been opened before.
She entered that race as a first-time candidate, without the advantage of precedent, and went on to command an extraordinary level of support. She came within a whisker of securing the seat, achieving a remarkable vote tally that few could have predicted from a first-time contender.
But Bella's story did not end at the ballot box.
She chose to turn an election campaign into a movement.
Rather than allowing the outcome to silence her, she asked a bigger question: What can we build together?
That vision gave birth to the VPP Women’s Forum Kenya — a platform she personally championed and funded to bring women Veterinary Paraprofessionals together, strengthen professional networks, create opportunities for mentorship and growth, amplify women's voices, and inspire women to step confidently into leadership, business, advocacy and professional excellence.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that leadership is not defined by the position you win, but by the doors you open for others.
Bella did not make it to the Board that year.
But she made history.
She showed that a VPP woman could step into spaces where no woman had gone before. She demonstrated that one woman with courage, conviction and a willingness to stand can move an entire profession forward.
And perhaps most importantly, she did not build a platform around herself.
She built one for women.
Today, through the VPP Women’s Forum, women Veterinary Paraprofessionals across Kenya have a space to connect, learn, encourage one another, share opportunities, develop professionally and collectively imagine a bigger future for themselves and for the profession.
From candidate to changemaker.
From one bold step to a movement.
From breaking a ceiling to helping others rise.
Rosebella Ochango is not waiting to be given a seat at the table. She is helping build bigger tables for the women coming behind her.
Today, KVPA celebrates a woman whose courage reminds us that sometimes, the most important victory is not winning the position — it is having the courage to be the first to try.
Bella, we see you.
We recognise you.
We celebrate you.
Your work. Your courage. Your impact. Your legacy.
