A snake in your yard does NOT automatically mean danger!🐍💚

We had a very tiny surprise visitor at BHVC this morning! This little guy was barely longer than a pencil, and after a little investigation, he was identified as a juvenile Eastern Kingsnake. He was calm, curious, and perfectly happy to hang out on my glove for a few minutes before he was safely relocated.

And he gave us a good opportunity for an important reminder:

Please don't kill snakes simply because you found one.

We understand that not everyone is comfortable around snakes (just ask Paula 😜)
For some people, that fear is very real and that's ok! You don't have to love snakes, touch them, or even be comfortable being near them.
But being afraid of an animal doesn't mean they have to die.

Snakes are an important part of our ecosystem and help control populations of rodents and other animals. Many of the snakes you encounter are completely harmless to people and pets.

Even when you aren't sure what kind of snake you've found, the safest thing to do is:
🐍Keep your distance
🐍Keep children and pets away
🐍Don't attempt to handle
🐍Give it an escape route whenever possible
🐍If you need help identifying or relocating the snake, call someone that knows how to do so safely. Remember, you can respect your own boundaries and still allow wildlife to live.

🚨Rabies: This One Really Matters🚨

We know... nobody loves getting reminders about vaccines.

But Rabies is one we feel very strongly about.

Here in Alabama, Rabies isn't something that only happens "somewhere else." It continues to be found in wildlife across our state, including raccoons, foxes, and bats. Unfortunately, domestic animals can be affected too.
And once clinical signs of Rabies appear, the virus is considered fatal. The good news? Rabies is preventable!
Keeping your pet's vaccination current is one of the simplest and most important things you can do to protect them, your family, and your community.

A few things we want Alabama pet parents to know:

💉Rabies vaccination is required by law for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

💉A current Rabies vaccine provides important protection if your pet encounters an infected animal. Even pets who spend most of their time indoors can potentially encounter wildlife - especially bats.

💉What about Rabies titers?
Titers can be useful in certain circumstances, such as evaluating a pet's antibody response or meeting specific travel requirements. However, a Rabies titer is not a substitute for keeping your pet's vaccination current, and Alabama does not recognize a titer as proof of Rabies vaccination.

💉Don't assume wildlife is harmless just because it isn't acting aggressively. Never handle bats, or approach sick, injured, or unusually behaving wildlife. Contact the appropriate local authorities if you encounter an animal that you suspect may have Rabies.

If you're not sure when your pet's Rabies vaccine is due or you're wondering whether or not a titer test is appropriate for your pet, give us a call! We'd much rather help you figure it out now than have you trying to sort it all out after a potential exposure.

Your Pet Can't Tell Us What Happened... But You Can! 💜🐾

You know that thing that your pet does at home?

That weird cough that only happens at 2am.

The limp that mysteriously disappears the second you walk through our doors 😅

The strange head movement you've never seen before.

The episode where they suddenly seemed confused, wobbly, painful, or just a little off.

Get a video! 📹

Videos and photos from home can be incredibly helpful when we're trying to figure out what's going on with your pet. Some symptoms are intermittent, happen only during certain activities, or simply don't show up during a short appointment.

A video can help us see things like:
-An unusual gait or limp
-Coughing, sneezing, or strange breathing
-Odd movements or episodes
-Changes in balance or coordination
-Difficulty getting up, jumping, or using stairs
-Changes in behavior or interactions
-Anything else that makes you think "Okay... that's not normal."

And don't worry about getting the perfect video. You don't need professional lighting, the perfect angle, and a camera crew 😂

If you can safely grab a few seconds of what's happening, that's often enough to give us another piece of the puzzle.
And if you can't get a video, that's ok too! Your description matters. You know what your pet normally looks and acts like better than anyone.

So the next time your pet decides to demonstrate their mysterious new symptom exactly once and then act completely normal for the vet...

💜🐾A Little BHVC Update🐾💜

Our BHVC family is navigating a bit of an unexpected plot twist right now 😅

Dr. Cooley injured her knee recently and is currently working with her doctors to determine the best path forward, which may (likely) include surgery.

As you can imagine, this has thrown a little bit of a wrench into our usual routine while we figure out what the next few weeks are going to look like. We're asking our wonderful clients for a little extra patience and grace as we navigate things behind the scenes and do our best to keep everything running smoothly.

We also have to make the tough call to let everyone know that Dr. Cooley will be unable to attend the upcoming UAD event as planned. She was really looking forward to being there and cheering everyone on, so she's definitely bummed to miss it!

In the meantime, please send Dr. Cooley some good healing vibes as she works on getting that knee back in working order.

We have a feeling they'd have A LOT to say 😅
Unfortunately, our pets can't tell us exactly what's bothering them, but they can certainly give us clues.

"My mouth hurts"
You may notice them dropping food, chewing differently, bad breath, pawing at the mouth, or less enthusiasm about food.

"My tummy doesn't feel great"
This can look like changes in appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lip licking, eating grass, drooling, or they just seem a little off.

"Something is bothering me or something hurts"
Hiding, restlessness, changes in behavior, being less social, or suddenly not wanting to do the things they normally enjoy can all be worth paying attention to.

"I don't feel like myself"
Sometimes there isn't just one obvious symptom. You just notice that your pet is acting differently and that matters, because you know your pet's normal better than anyone.

So, when your gut tells you, "Something is off," don't be afraid to tell us. Sometimes those little changes are the first clues that help us figure out what your pet is trying to say.

We may not speak fluent dog or cat... but we're pretty good at listening to their humans💜🐾

Your Pet's Vet Appointment Packing List🧳🐾

Heading to the vet? Here are a few things that can make your appointment a little easier and give your veterinary team all of the information they need to give your pet the best care.

📃 A list of current medications and supplements
Even if we prescribed them! Include the dose and how often your pet gets them.

🍗 A list of their current food and treats
Especially if there have been any recent changes!

📱 Videos or photos of anything unusual
Limping, coughing, strange breathing, odd movements, skin issues, or new/concerning behaviors

💩 A stool sample (When requested of course 😆)
Your pet will thank you!

❓ Your questions!
Write them down before you come. It's incredibly easy to think of something in the car, walk into the exam room, and immediately forget it.

📋 Medical records
If you are a new client or seeing us for something treated elsewhere, previous records and test results can give us valuable information. We like to try to get these records before your appointment, so just let us know who to call for records when you make your appointment with us.

💜 Your observations!
You know your pet better than anyone. Tell us what you've noticed, even if you're not sure if it's important. Because sometimes the little details help us put the whole picture together 💜🐾

Things Your Vet Wants You to Tell Us

You know your pet better than anyone. You notice the little things - the things that might not seem important enough to mention at an appointment.

Tell us anyway 💜

"She's been licking her lips a lot more"

"He's sleeping in a different spot"

"She's not quite as excited about breakfast"

"He's been drinking more water"

"She just seems...off"

"He threw up once last Tuesday"

Those little details can actually be really helpful! Changes in appetite, drinking, sleep, bathroom habits, activity, behavior, or just your pet's overall personality can give us important clues about what's going on.

And if you're thinking "I don't know if this is relevant, but..." - go ahead and tell us!
We'd much rather have too much information than miss a piece of the puzzle.

After all, you're the expert on what's normal for your pet. We're here to help put the rest of the puzzle together 💜🐾

BHVC Breaks It Down: Hot Cars and Pets 🌡️

It might be 82℉ outside (for now😉), but inside a parked car, temperatures can become dangerous *very* quickly - even with the windows cracked. And no, shade and "I'll only be gone for a few minutes" don't make it any safer.

If your pet is with you and you need to run in the store, please consider taking them home first instead. A quick errand can turn into a medical emergency before you know it.

Please never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle on a warm day.

🥵If you see a pet trapped in a hot vehicle and you're concerned about their safety:

-Notify the business or property staff immediately so they can locate the owner.
-If the pet appears distressed or the owner cannot be located promptly, contact law enforcement or emergency services.
-Stay nearby and keep an eye on the pet while help is being contacted, if it is safe for you do so.

Overheating can become life threatening heatstroke *fast* and prevention is always easier than treating an emergency.
Your pet would much rather be home in the air conditioning than sitting in the car anyway. 💜🐾

Meet Celine! She came to see us for her spay, and once surgery was over, she was tucked into a nice little blanket "purrito" for some cozy post op recovery.

She may not be particularly impressed by her new cone accessory, but she sure looks adorable all snuggled up and getting plenty of TLC while she recovers from anesthesia. 💜

That face definitely says, "I would like to speak to whoever authorized this."

Every pet has ✨that one thing✨ they do that makes absolutely no sense.
Maybe they spin in a hundred circles before they lay down.
Maybe your cat screams at the wall at 2am.
Maybe they have a favorite toy that is objectively terrible, but it MUST be carried everywhere.
Or maybe they sleep like this 👀
