Diagnostic imaging can be tricky to interpret, but at Front Range Equine Performance, we believe everyone deserves to understand the findings—even our patients!

Dr. Branecky took a moment to walk this curious patient through his images and explain that, fortunately, none of the findings were of significant concern! With a few adjustments to his shoeing, we’re optimistic he’ll be feeling more comfortable in no time.

After all, good communication is an important part of veterinary care, even when your patient has four legs and a mane! 🧡🐴

Not every soundness concern is obvious from the ground.

At Front Range Equine Performance, ridden evaluations can be incorporated into a soundness examination to detect subtle lameness. This allows our veterinarians to observe your horse performing the movements or exercises for a more accurate and precise exam.

Maybe your horse feels different in one direction, struggles with a particular lead, becomes resistant during collection, has difficulty with lateral work, or simply doesn’t feel like themselves under saddle. These may be the early signs of discomfort without overt lameness. Seeing your horse ridden can provide valuable additional information and help our veterinarians better understand what you are experiencing to aid in the diagnostic process.

A comprehensive performance evaluation includes a standing physical examination, movement assessment on different surfaces, flexion tests, and, when beneficial, an under-saddle evaluation. From there, we can determine whether additional diagnostics are warranted and work with you, your trainer, primary veterinarian, and farrier to develop an individualized plan to keep your horse as happy and comfortable as possible.

Riders can often feel a change in their horse before we can see it. If something has changed—even if you can’t see an obvious lameness—you can bring your tack and ride during your horse’s evaluation.

Dr. Marianne Marshall-Gibson recently had the pleasure of hosting her Veterinary Management Group (VMG) in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado. The group is made up of equine veterinary practice owners from across North America who come together to share ideas, learn from one another, and talk openly about the opportunities and challenges that come with owning and growing an independent veterinary practice.

Over several days, the group exchanged ideas on everything from practice finances and fees to managing costs and building sustainable businesses, with Dr. Marshall-Gibson also leading a workshop on successful direct-cost management. The week ended on a perfect note with a beautiful tour through Rocky Mountain National Park with Purple Points Tour Company, owned and operated by two of FREP’s wonderful clients.

We’re grateful to be part of a community of equine veterinarians who believe that sharing knowledge and supporting one another helps create stronger, healthier practices—and a more sustainable future for equine veterinary medicine.
