Meet Tony! 🐶🎓

When Kailee and Ryan brought Tony to us, life with three dogs was starting to feel a little chaotic.

Wish you could take your dog more places without worrying about pulling, jumping, or whether they'll listen?

Meet Nico! 🐶🎓

His family's goal when they started training was something we hear from a lot of dog owners: “We want to be able to take our dog everywhere with us.”

Before training, Nico struggled with…

Moose is a 80 lb lab from Berthoud. His family loved him and couldn't walk him. That's the whole story, and it's the most common call we get.

This footage is from his first day with us. Not week one. Day one.

He's not a finished dog here. What changed this fast is his clarity. Moose finally understood what was being asked of him. Dogs like him aren't stubborn, they're guessing. Take the guessing away and you see this. The rest of the program is polishing that obedience out in the real world, around real distractions, and teaching his family to get the same thing at home.

Small behaviors can turn into big habits.

Leash biting might look playful or harmless at first, especially when your dog is excited and just wants to play.

But if grabbing, tugging, and pulling on the leash consistently turns into a game, your dog gets more opportunities to practice that behavior.

And the more a behavior gets rehearsed, the more likely it is to show up again.

Instead of turning the leash into a tug toy:
- stay calm and avoid making it a game
- redirect them to an appropriate behavior
- reward them when they disengage from the leash
- stay consistent every time it happens

You don't have to wait until a small behavior becomes a frustrating habit before addressing it.

Training the little things matters too.

Freedom is earned.

Giving your dog more freedom doesn’t mean skipping the structure that comes first.

Before we expect our dogs to confidently explore, enjoy more distance, or handle exciting environments, we need to give them the skills to make good choices when it matters.

Here’s what that process can look like:

1️⃣ Start with structure: build a foundation with clear expectations, leash skills, recall, boundaries, and consistent communication.
2️⃣ Practice before you expect: gradually add distance, new environments, and distractions instead of expecting reliability everywhere right away.
3️⃣ Build reliability: practice until your dog can check in, respond, and make better choices even when the real world gets distracting.
4️⃣ Then add more freedom: as your dog becomes more consistent, give them more opportunities to sniff, explore, move, and experience the world.

And remember: freedom doesn’t always mean off-leash.

It can be a longer sniff break. Exploring on a long line. Getting released from place. Joining you at a patio. Going on more adventures. Or simply having more opportunities to experience the world with you.

The goal of training isn’t less freedom. It’s building the reliability that allows for MORE of it.

More adventures, opportunities, and most importantly, more trust.

But those little reps add up! Consistent practice is what turns something your dog is learning into a skill they can actually rely on.

Confidence isn't something every puppy automatically has. It's something we can help them build.

And it doesn't always require huge challenges.

It can start with something as simple as exploring an unfamiliar surface, stepping onto a moving teeter-totter, searching through a ball pit, or figuring out an enrichment toy.

These small, manageable experiences give puppies opportunities to explore, problem-solve, and learn how to work through something new.

Then we gradually bring those skills into the real world.

In this puppy's case, that means being able to practice her recall outside, even while a loud train passes nearby.

She notices what's happening around her, but she can still think, respond to her handler, and continue working.

That's what confidence can look like.

Give them new experiences. Let them problem-solve. Provide clear guidance. And give them plenty of opportunities to succeed.

Those little wins add up!

Your dog is always learning even when you're not having a "training session."

Dogs learn from patterns.

If pulling gets them closer to something they want, pulling worked.

If jumping gets them attention, jumping worked.

If rushing through an open door gets them outside, rushing worked.

But the same thing applies to the behaviors we do want.

When calmly waiting gets the door opened, calm worked.

When checking in with you gets rewarded, paying attention worked.

When coming when called earns praise, and sometimes the freedom to go explore again, recall worked.

That's why training isn't just the 10 or 20 minutes you intentionally set aside to practice commands.

It's happening on walks. At the front door. When guests arrive. During play. And throughout all those little everyday interactions you might not even think of as "training."

Pay attention to what your dog is practicing and what those behaviors are getting them.

Because the behaviors that consistently work are the ones they're more likely to try again. 🐶👏
