CVHS Pet of the Week: Tabby!
Tabby is a timid but sweet girl who previously lived in a quiet home with no exposure to canines, felines, and children. So far here at CVHS, she is tolerating her feline roommates who give her space. We are still getting to know Tabby, but so far she demonstrates that she would do best in a calm home and with a patient adopter while she adjusts to her new environment. Please feel free to reach out to CVHS if you would like to inquire about adopting Tabby!

We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to wish everyone a happy first of the month and would like to remind everyone that June is National Pet Preparedness Month. We would like to highlight some tips and tricks to help you prepare and keep your pets safe during emergencies. Including your pets in your family's emergency plans, like fire drills, is important to understand how to safely remove your pet during a home evacuation. Having a pet emergency kit on hand can help stabilize and supply tools to help monitor your pet until they receive medical treatment. Having a photo or ID for your pet is beneficial in locating your pet in situations where you are separated. Additionally, having a list of go-to pet-safe places you and your pet can go to during an emergency is imperative to prepare for emergencies. Lastly, always account for seasonal changes and weather to better prepare for situations like having fans and water available during hot seasons and warmers and blankets to keep warm during freezing temps.

If you have any questions on how to best prepare for emergencies with your pest, feel free to reach out via text, call, or email, and we would be happy to answer any questions. If you would like more information about pet emergency kits, please visit the previous post about what you should keep in your pet emergency kit. Thank you all for being a part of our family here at Onion River Animal Hospital, and have a good day.

If you and your pet go out for a stroll or a hike in the woods, you may stumble across a small brown pellet that can be enticing to your pet. These quarter-sized pellets are wildlife rabies vaccine bait drops that are spread by the State Department of Agriculture to help prevent rabies among our local wildlife. The oral vaccine is wrapped in sweet-smelling bait to attract raccoons and skunks. These pellets may be spread via drops from a plane in more rural areas or hand-spread near densely populated areas.

If you come across these pellets and your pet eats one, it will not have any adverse reactions to your pet and you do not need to contact your vet. However, this vaccine is meant for wildlife and will not provide protection against rabies in your pet. To prevent rabies in our pets, domesticated animals must be vaccinated in a veterinary setting. If you have any questions concerning rabies vaccination or bait drops, feel free to contact us via text, call, or email, or you can visit HealthVermont.gov. Thank you all for being a part of our family here at Onion River Animal Hospital, and have a good day.

CVHS Pet of the Week: Foxy!

Foxy is a sweet, gentle little fluffball with the most adorable fox-like face, and a heart to match. At 9 years old, she’s the perfect balance of cozy couch naps and curious sniffy adventures. Independent at times, Foxy is happy doing her own thing — but the moment you call her over, she’s ready to softly place her paws on you, and dance on her tippy toes for affection. She can be initially nervous around strangers, but it doesn't take her long to warm up.

Foxy loves playing ball and spending time with people. She lived harmoniously with two cats previously, enjoyed playing with other dogs, and has done well around children, but hasn't lived with them. Foxy would most likely do well with respectful children who are understanding about giving her space. She’s also house-trained and would love a home where she can enjoy daily walks, sniffing the world around her, and plenty of comfy places to nap afterward.

Foxy’s beautiful, fluffy coat will need regular brushing to keep her looking and feeling her best. If you’re looking for a calm, loving companion with a gentle soul and a whole lot of fluff, Foxy may be your girl! Foxy is pending a canine dental on 5/27.

A 5-week Good Manners training course is included in Foxy's $350.00 adoption fee. Please call the Adoption Center at 802-476-3811, or email [email protected], to schedule a time to talk to an adoption counselor about her, and to determine if you should meet Foxy.

We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to remind everyone this Memorial Day weekend to be vigilant while spending time with our families and participating in cookouts. Cooked bones, watermelon rinds, and corncobs are common waste products after a delicious barbecue meal, but can be dangerous if consumed by our furry friends.

Cooked bones tend to splinter and can cause damage to our dogs' esophagus and GI tract. The bones, along with watermelon rind and corncobs, can cause blockages within the GI tract. This can lead to further damage and harm to the internal organs. This is why proper disposal is imperative whenever you or your loved ones eat these foods. It is important to protect our pet by making sure these byproducts are kept in a safe container away from where a curious nose may find it.

If you suspect your pet may have eaten some of the previously mentioned waste products, please call immediately so your pet can be seen quickly. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via call, text, or email. Thank you all for being a part of our family here at Onion River Animal Hospital, and have a happy Memorial Day

Welcome back inside ORAH, where we look behind the scenes at what our team does on a day-to-day basis.

Today's spotlight is the fluid pump. The fluid pump plays an essential role in the treatment of our surgical and hospitalized patients. A fluid bag is attached to the pump, and the machine monitors and administers fluids to our patients via an IV catheter. IV fluid therapy is crucial to many of our patients as it helps keep them hydrated, gives them electrolytes, and helps protect our patients' kidneys if they are suffering from toxin exposure. IV fluids can also be used to carry medications that need to be administered over a period of time.

If you have any questions about the fluid pump, IV fluids, or would like us to highlight a certain aspect of the veterinary clinic, please let us know! Also, thank you to Liz CVT for being our lovely model for today. Thank you all for being a part of our family here at Onion River Animal Hospital, and have a nice day.

CVHS pet of the week: Azul!

Azul is a bit shy with people initially, but once she knows that you are safe and kind, she warms right up and will happily accept pets and belly rubs. She loves a good game of fetch and is treat-motivated, so training with this girl is a pleasure. She's very attentive and eager to please. She has done well with children of all ages. She has previously slept in a crate at night, and she has a crate here that can go with her to her new home.

She has previously played with two large male dogs and kept up with their rough play style. She has not met any smaller dogs. She is now looking for a home without any chickens or cats nearby.

A 5-week Good Manners training course is included in Azul's $350.00 adoption fee. Please call the Adoption Center at 802-476-3811 or email [email protected] to schedule a time to talk to an adoption counselor about her, and to determine if you should meet Azul.

We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to take this opportunity during arthritis awareness month to go over some of the common signs and causes of arthritis in our pets.

Arthritis, also known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a common chronic deteriorating disease of the joints that can be caused by old age, genetic abnormality, or trauma. Arthritis occurs when there is a loss of cartilage in the joint, causing the connective tissue to thicken and scar. Limping, soreness, and lameness are common signs of arthritis. Preventing arthritis in your pets can be done in a variety of ways, such as screening for genetic abnormalities and proper weight management. Keeping your pets within a healthy weight range is crucial to help prevent excessive wear and tear on joints that may later lead to arthritis.

If you have questions or suspect your pet may be experiencing signs of arthritis, please contact us via call, text, or email so we can get your pet seen and tested. Your pet's health and well-being is very important to us here at Onion River Animal Hospital, and if you would like us to highlight a specific disease or condition on our page, please feel free to reach out! Thank you all for being a part of our family here at Onion River Animal Hospital.
