We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to start Animal Pain Awareness Month off right by going over some common signs of pain in our pets. It's important to note that every pet is different and will express pain or discomfort in different ways. Although some signs can be easy to spot, like limping, gunky eyes, or non-stop scratching at their ears/shaking their head, other signs can be more subtle. Some subtle yet common signs to look out for are not wanting to eat or having a decreased appetite, being more lethargic and less active, and generally not acting like their happy selves.

Overall, owners know their pets best and are crucial in spotting when your furry friends aren't feeling themselves. If you suspect your pet is showing signs of pain or would like more information on what to look out for, feel free to reach out via call, text, or email would be happy to assist. CVHS Pet of the Week: Folgers!

Folgers is a friendly, happy guy, and he expresses his joy with the most amazing wiggle-butt ever! He's sweet and affectionate, and despite his size, he loves to climb into laps whenever possible.

Folgers prefers the company of people over other dogs, so he is looking for a home where he can be the only dog and not be expected to go to dog parks or live in a neighborhood with lots of other dogs. Folgers lived with three cats previously, and he ADORED them, so if you are a cat family looking for a dog, he's your guy!

Folgers was born with an interesting mix of male and female body parts, and though he is a male, he does not have an external p***s. He's completely unconcerned about the human desire to assign gender, and is medically perfectly fine!

CVHS Pet of the Week: Ted!

Ted may be a tad shy initially, but once he knows you're a friend, he's all about staying close, leaning in for cuddles, and enjoying your company. He will gladly be your shadow, as he's happiest glued to his human friends!

Ted previously spent time around older children, as well as other dogs. We have not had a chance to introduce him to dogs because of his recent neuter, but he is non-reactive to seeing other dogs here. He has not been around cats.

Ted is eager to learn and a smart cookie, so he's doing really well getting comfortable with the crate, responding well to four-on-the-floor training, and he walks wonderfully on a leash and harness.

CVHS Pet of the Week: Grits!

Grits is a very enthusiastic, high-energy dog and would love a new home that can keep him active and do lots of fun activities with him to keep his brain and his body busy. He's three years old, but his joy of life makes him seem like an eager one-year-old, and his prior owner described his personality as that of a teenage boy; we agree!!

Grits has lived with both men and women, children over 6 years old, dogs of all sizes, cats, and other small animals. He behaves very poorly around chickens and can be annoying to cats, so it might be best for people with cats not to adopt him. When meeting dogs, he comes on very strong, and many dogs find that rude and react strongly to him, so we are working on calmer greetings with him. He doesn't have much spatial awareness, and when he gets excited around kids, has the potential to knock them over.

He loves to play fetch and tug, and is happy with active walks (with leash and harness), and zoomies around our fenced-in yards. Grits is working on his recall; if he is let off leash, he will smile at you and take off running. We are working with him on improving all his manners, and he loves force-free training.

We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to take this opportunity during International Immunization Awareness Month to discuss why you should vaccinate your pet and answer some common questions.

Q: Why should I vaccinate my pet?

A: Many harmful and infectious diseases can be prevented by giving your pets vaccines, as it allows them to build up immunity in their body against different diseases. This will help prevent outbreaks of diseases like parvo, FeLV, and rabies, which can be life-threatening for your pet. Additionally, getting your pet vaccinated against rabies is required by law.

Q: How long does immunity last?

A: Every vaccine is different, and immunity can last for years, but all will need to be boosted annually or every three years depending upon the vaccine, to keep up your pet's immunity.

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: After giving your pet the vaccine is normal to have some tenderness around the area or for your pet to be a little sluggish the following day as their body processes the vaccine.

We here at Onion River Animal Hospital would like to start Chip Your Pet Day off right as a reminder to check that chip! Microchipping allows veterinary staff, shelter workers, and pet parents to locate lost pets and connect them to their owners. If you don't know whether your pet is microchipped, feel free to call, and we can check at your next appointment. Similarly, if you find a lost animal without any identification, you can call, and we may be able to check the microchip number and find their family.

It's important to have your pets registered with both your vet and other pet tracking websites like AAHA's free microchip registry. If you have any questions about microchip applications or registry, please feel free to call, text, or email. CVHS Pet of the Week: Jabberwocky!

Jabberwocky is a fun dog and is really sweet when meeting new people. He is treat-motivated and walks well on leash with a front-clip harness. He is a perfect gentleman in the car, and really enjoys the ride. He has done pretty well keeping his kennel clean, even overnight.

Jabberwocky has played well with a number of our other dogs here, so he would probably love to live with another dog. He can be mouthy when he gets over-stimulated playing with people, so we feel he should not go to a home with children around. Redirecting him onto something positive to play with works really well for him. In his prior home he had no cat experience. He was briefly adopted out and needed to come back as he was too interested in the feline in the home.

CVHS Pet of the Week: Emily Rose!

Emily Rose is new to us, so we are still getting to know her, but so far she has demonstrated that she would do best in a calm and quiet home. So far, Emily Rose is tolerating her feline roommates who give her space.

In her previous home, she was used to the indoor-only lifestyle, and when comfortable, she would occasionally be a lap cat. She is a cat that will let you know when she has had enough attention. With this preference to call the shots of affection, and her lack of experience with children and canines, her next home should not include them.
