Very important message- and avoid if possible trapping in this heat!
🚨 Important Reminder: Humane Trapping Means Supervision 🚨
We recently saw a photo of a large dog trap that was destroyed by a scared dog that was caught by animal control in an unmonitored trap. The dog was trapped for hours and was undoubtedly injured as he attempted to get out. The name of the agency is irrelevant because this is unfortunately a common practice by many animal welfare organizations, rescues and people with access to a trap. We hope to change the practice of setting live traps without direct monitoring (via in person or live camera) AND fast response time to the trap.
Setting a trap for a lost dog and leaving it unmonitored is cruel and inhumane. No dog should ever be left trapped for hours on end without anyone knowing. Imagine the fear, the panic, and the risk of injury a dog faces when stuck and alone. 💔
Cellular trail cameras and/or live cellular security cameras are affordable and send photos and video directly to your phone, allowing you to monitor in real time. This is very basic equipment for lost dog trapping.
At the very least, you should have the trap within direct line of sight so you can respond immediately.
Lost dogs are already terrified. They deserve safety, compassion, and dignity — not to be left scared and suffering in a trap until someone “gets around” to checking. Traps should be tied open or closed completely when no one is available to monitor and respond immediately.
👉 If you are going to trap, do it responsibly. If you can’t monitor AND quickly respond, do not set a trap.
