Let’s talk about being a TNR volunteer without being pushy.

First and foremost, if someone isn't interested in TNR, 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥. Sometimes, no amount of explaining, persuading, or educating will change someone's position. 😫 Unless there is a way to trap the cats from an adjoining property where you have permission, there are times when you simply have to move on.

But sometimes, not pushing is exactly what allows someone to eventually come around and here's a successful example for you... 👇👇👇

In the summer of 2020, we trapped at a location where there were 5️⃣ cats. On our first attempt, we caught 2️⃣ of them. After we released those two, we were told by the property owner that she didn't want us to trap anymore cats there. We respected her wishes, but we had a plan. Muwhahaha!

She was on a fixed income so we continued our visits to bring her food donations. We didn't lecture her. We didn't pressure her. We simply stayed present. Then, naturally... this conversation happened!

Me: How are your kitties doing?

Her: They are doing really, really good. I didn’t see them for about a week and I thought they weren’t coming back or that maybe they had gone off somewhere to die, but you know what? They both came back and they eat here everyday.

Me: Aw, that’s great!

Her: And you know what else? The male one you caught, you know, the black and white fluffy one? He used to leave all the time and now he always stays right out front on the porch. He used to fight with that big yellow cat and now he don’t pay him no mind.

Me: So, is it okay if we come back and get the rest of them?

Her: Yes, that’ll be fine. You know, it gets lonesome here sometimes and when the weather is nice I like to sit on the front porch with them.

Me: I’m so glad they have you and you have them.

TNR advocacy is sometimes about planting a seed. 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨.

If you showed up here just to tell us all cats need to be indoors: we will ban you. It's time to cut through the modern myths and recognize the truth: Wild cats belong outdoors just as much as they belong with us. They've been an integral part of the ecosystem for thousands of years, wherever we've set foot. They're not your pets, they're feral creatures with the same history as our own civilization and the wild world. Respect their nature. Respect their habitat. Cats have been living outside for thousands of years. This isn't new. Cats born in the wild, or who have otherwise refused to be pets, deserve a happy life outside. Confinement can cause an array of mental and physical health issues in felines who are conditioned to outdoors.

While it's true these cats are predators, they also play a role in the food chain, and are part of the local ecosystem. They should be treated with the same respect and consideration given to any other animal in the area: by leaving them be, and making sure they have HABITAT to live their natural, healthy, happy lives. We need to start supporting community caretakers who help manage feline colonies through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs, and provide the resources these creatures need to survive on their own. Don't mistake enclosure for care. Recognize their history. Honor their freedom.

(We are not saying don't rescue and rehabilitate. Tame the ones who want to be tamed. Rehabilitate the ones who strayed or were dumped... Just respect the ones who were born wild, and want nothing to do with indoors.)

Remember: Advocating for animals in need saves lives, strengthens awareness, and inspires others to act. Together we save them!
