🐾 Have you ever wondered how much food it takes to feed a shelter full of animals? We thought we’d break down the numbers to give you a little perspective!

For easy math, let’s use an example of 100 dogs and 30 cats.

🐶 100 Dogs
At an estimated average of 3 cups per dog each day, that’s 300 cups daily, or about 525 pounds of dry food per week.

🐱 30 Cats
At an estimated average of 1 cup per cat each day, that’s 30 cups daily, or about 52.5 pounds of dry food per week.

Together, that’s approximately 577.5 pounds, or 14½ 40-pound bags of dry food every week! These calculations assume each cup of food weighs approximately 4 ounces.

And that's not even counting the wet food we use throughout the week! Wet food may be given as a special treat, mixed with meals, used to help give medications, or offered to animals who aren't feeling well and need a little extra encouragement to eat.

Of course, these numbers are estimates. The number of animals in our care changes regularly. Some eat more, some eat less, and every animal’s feeding plan is adjusted to their individual needs.

We just wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes perspective on one of the everyday parts of caring for a shelter full of animals. Opening a bag of food or filling a bowl may seem like a small thing, but when you consider all the animals we feed each day, it adds up quickly! ❤️

🐾 How much food do you think 98 dogs and 26 cats eat in ONE WEEK?

We recently calculated how much food we use to feed the animals in our care. At the time, we had 98 dogs and 26 cats. Since then, our dog population alone has grown to 122, so we’re going through even more food!

Food is a regular part of our shelter inventory, just like cleaning supplies, treats, bedding, and medical supplies. It's something we go through every single week.

And while we aren't asking anyone to go out and buy food specifically for us, if you happen to have an extra bag of dog or cat food at home, or you're already at the store and want to add an extra bag to our inventory, we are ALWAYS grateful. ❤️

And yes, we gladly accept opened bags or containers of dog and cat food too! If your pet didn't like a food, you have some left over after switching foods, or you simply have more than you need, we'd be happy to put it to good use. We just ask that the food is free of mold and bugs and still safe for the animals to eat.

Every bag, box, or container helps us keep our shelves stocked and our animals' bowls full. 🐾

⬇️ Leave your guess in the comments: How much food did those 98 dogs and 26 cats go through in a week? We’ll share the answer soon!

🌟 Second Chance Spotlight | Lance 🐾

Lance has been getting some extra one-on-one time lately due to some wonderful volunteers, and he is showing us that there is so much more to this cattle-dog-type guy than what you see when you walk past his kennel. ❤️

🐕 Multiple walks: Lance has gone on a few walks with different people and has done really well! He enjoys getting out, exploring, and spending time with his person.

🖥️ Office dog test: Lance recently got to spend some time in an employee's office while they worked at their desk. Instead of needing constant attention, he settled down on the bed with a chew and relaxed while his person worked. 👏

🚪 Potty manners: While in the office, Lance went to the door when he needed to go outside! That's exactly the kind of everyday communication we love seeing from any dog.

❤️ He wants HIS person: Lance is a loyal guy, and once he connects with someone, he really wants to be their guy. He is looking for his person and will happily do his best to be their number one — 24/7. If you're looking for a dog who wants to stick close, be involved in your life, and know what his person is up to, Lance may be your guy.

🧠 Smart & treat motivated: Lance is a smart guy who is eager to learn when there are treats involved. He tends to stay close to his people and is very loyal to those he trusts.

🐾 Good with other dogs: Lance goes out with a group of about 15 other dogs, and he does well with them! He has shown us that he is comfortable being around and spending time with other dogs.

⚡ Active sidekick: Lance still has plenty of energy and would love a home that can give him regular walks, exercise, mental enrichment, and something to keep his clever brain busy. He is the kind of dog who would probably love having a "job" to do!

🏡 House trained: Lance has already shown us that he knows the basics of house manners, and his recent trip to the office gave us another great example of him communicating when he needed to go outside.

And here is something we really want people to remember about Lance — kennel behavior does NOT always show you a dog's true colors.

It is easy to walk through an adoption building and gravitate toward the dog who is quietly lying in the back of their kennel. Meanwhile, the dog who is standing at the front, bouncing around, barking, or reacting to the activity outside their kennel can get overlooked.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what has happened to Lance.

Lance is an active dog, and he can be barrier reactive in the kennel environment. But when he gets the chance to actually get out of that kennel and spend time with people, we see a very different dog. We've seen him go on walks, spend time with other dogs, settle on a bed with a chew while someone works, and even tell us when he needs to go outside.

Sadly, because people see the kennel version of Lance first, he is often overlooked in our adoption building and even at adoption events. And that is one of the reasons this truly good boy has become one of our longest-term residents. 💔

Lance isn't the quiet dog in the kennel that everyone walks past and immediately falls in love with. He's the dog you have to give a chance to get out and show you who he really is.

And when you do? You get a loyal, smart, active, affectionate guy who wants nothing more than to have his person and be their number one. ❤️

Lance has been waiting long enough. We would love for the right person to come meet the dog outside the kennel and see what we've been seeing.

🐾🎃 OCTOBER IS ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH! 🎃🐾

There's more to October than pumpkin spice lattes, sweater weather, and finding the perfect Halloween costume… it’s also a month dedicated to celebrating SHELTER DOGS! 🐶❤️

And while October puts a special spotlight on dogs, we also want to remind everyone that shelter pets of all kinds are waiting for their people. 🐶🐱❤️ Whether you’re looking for a dog, cat, kitten, or another furry friend, there are so many animals in shelters hoping someone will give them a chance.

At Madison County Animal Shelter, every day there are dogs waiting for someone to see them for who they really are—not just how they act in a kennel.

🏠 Some are couch potatoes.
🎾 Some are ready for an adventure.
🐕 Some love playing with other dogs.
🧸 Some would rather have their people all to themselves.
😂 Some are goofy.
❤️ Some are shy and need time to come out of their shell.
🐾 And some have been waiting much longer than they ever should have had to.

A kennel is not a home, and kennel behavior doesn't always show you who a dog truly is. A dog who is bouncing around, barking, or reacting to the activity around their kennel may be completely different once they're outside, away from the noise and stress of the shelter environment.

This October, we want to challenge you to look past the kennel. 👀❤️

Come meet a dog. Take them for a walk. Spend some time with them. Ask our staff questions. If you're not ready to adopt, consider fostering, taking a dog on a day outing, sharing their post, or simply telling a friend about a pet who needs a home.

And if you visit us and think, “I just don't see a pet here that would fit my home,” don't count the shelter out! 🐾

New animals are always coming through our doors, and the pet who fits your family might not be here today—but could arrive tomorrow, next week, or later this month. You never know when the right dog, cat, or kitten might show up! ❤️

🐾 Keep checking back. Your shelter match could be the next animal who walks through our doors.

This October, consider adopting. Consider fostering. Consider sharing. Consider giving a shelter pet a chance.

Because somewhere out there is a shelter pet waiting for someone who is looking for them. 🏡❤️🐾

Happy Adopt a Shelter Dog Month—and happy National Adopt a Pet Month to all the shelter pets still waiting for their chance!

From Heartworm Positive to Happy & Home: A Success Story 🐾❤️

When Huckleberry arrived at our shelter, he had a gentle smile, a wagging tail… and a heartworm-positive diagnosis. Many people assume heartworm is the end of the road for a dog, but Huckleberry's story proves the opposite: with treatment, patience, and love, heartworm-positive dogs can thrive.

Huckleberry began his treatment right away. He spent a few quiet weeks resting, enjoying cozy blankets, and soaking up affection from our staff. Through every step, he showed exactly who he was—sweet, resilient, and ready for a second chance.
And then it happened: Huckleberry was adopted!

Today, Huckleberry is living his best life. He goes on walks, plays with toys, snoozes on the couch, and loves his new family with all his heart. His diagnosis never stopped him—and thanks to proper veterinary care and a treatment plan, he’s healthy, happy, and thriving.

Heartworm-positive dogs deserve futures just as bright as any other dog’s. They are adoptable. They are resilient. And, like Huckleberry, they can live their lives to the fullest.

Huckleberry’s story reminds us what a second chance can mean. Another heartworm-positive dog is waiting at our shelter for someone to give them that same chance. Could you be their person? Email us to learn more about them and what their care would involve. 📧 [email protected]
