From The June Issue of : The Lagotto Romagnolo – Truffle Dog Extraordinaire
By Amy Fernandez

Truffles have been a celebrated delicacy throughout recorded history, and for all that time this celebrity fungus has been linked to a few select regions of Europe. Italy is known for its white truffles; black or Perigord truffles are named for that region of France. Okay, truffle sourcing is not our topic, but their scarcity ensures that truffle prices remain sky high, generally ranging from $3,000 to $8,000 per pound. Those are the average prices; they can go way higher. The current record-setting truffle sold for over $330,000. It’s the familiar story of insatiable demand and extremely restricted supply.

Things are changing in the truffle biz. Several new players have entered the field, among them the Pacific Northwest. Oregon’s American white truffle has steadily made headway into that exclusive market. And that, in turn, has spawned the annual Oregon Truffle Festival–now in its second decade. Okay, fine, let’s get to the dogs. As we know, or should know, at one point in time, the Truffle Dog was an established and highly prized breed. The dogs, along with the ancient art of truffle cultivation had just about disappeared by 1903, when Drury offered this description in British Dogs...read more here: https://caninechronicle.com/?p=360425

Good read

Lagotto Romagnolos aren’t “easy dogs for everyone,” and pretending they are is why so many people misunderstand them.
People think choosing a Lagotto is about the cute curls, the teddy-bear look, or the novelty of a truffle-hunting breed.
The reality is it’s a lifestyle decision that quietly reshapes how your time, your routines, and your attention are spent.
Most owners don’t realize that a Lagotto doesn’t just fit into your life.
Your life reorganizes around their need for engagement, purpose, and connection.
People imagine the highlight moments:
the intelligence, the affectionate nature, the playful personality.
What they don’t picture is the intensity —
the constant thinking, the need for stimulation, the way they stay mentally “on” all the time.
Lagottos are not passive companions.
They are deeply people-oriented dogs who want to work with you, think with you, and be involved in everything you do.
People think high energy means more exercise.
The reality is mental engagement, because problem-solving, training, and purpose matter just as much — if not more — than physical activity.
You can’t “half-own” this breed.
They pick up on boredom and inconsistency quickly, and may respond with restlessness, barking, or destructive habits — not because they’re bad, but because they’re under-stimulated.
That’s why people who treat Lagottos like low-maintenance, decorative dogs struggle.
The dog isn’t being difficult —
it’s reacting to a lack of purpose and structure.
This breed was built to work closely with humans —
to search, to think, to engage.
Not to be ignored, under-challenged, or left without direction.
People who thrive with Lagottos share certain traits.
They’re patient, consistent, curious, and willing to invest time in training and mental enrichment.
People who don’t often label them as “too much” or “hard to handle.”
The truth is simple and often overlooked.
Lagottos amplify your level of involvement as an owner.
If you’re engaged, structured, and present, they become incredibly loyal, intelligent, and deeply rewarding companions.
If you’re not, they reflect that with chaos and frustration.
That’s why experienced owners don’t underestimate this breed.
They respect it.
They know a Lagotto doesn’t just want affection.
It needs purpose.
And once you experience that level of connection —
that combination of intelligence and devotion —
it’s hard to settle for anything less.
Lagotto Romagnolos aren’t difficult.
They’re driven.
And drive requires responsibility.
