KLEH is super excited to announce we are adding a new Veterinarian to our staff!

Please help us welcome Dr. Hall!

Dr. Lydia Hall is originally from the Finger Lakes region of New York, where she developed her passion for horses through trail riding with her family and working as a veterinary assistant. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with honors from the University of Tennessee. In her free time, Dr. Hall enjoys hiking, playing soccer, painting, and reading. She also loves spending time with her friends and family, including her cat, Alice. Her professional interests include equine dentistry, ophthalmology, and sports medicine. She is excited to be joining Kentucky Lake Equine Hospital and looks forward to serving and growing in the equine community while building strong relationships.

We have openings right now for part time team members for the right candidates. We are needing stall staff, a reception/front desk team member, and a veterinary technician (preferably certified). Breeding season started in February! Just a few pictures from the last month. At KLEH, we offer may reproductive procedures:
-Artificial Insemination with fresh cooled or frozen semen
-Pre and Post breeding mare management
-Embryo transfer
-Thawing and implantation of frozen embryos
-Stallion collection training
-Stallion collection for fresh cooled semen
-Cryopreservation of stallion semen

New research has led us to start recommending and offering yearly insulin testing to all our patients. A recent study showed that horses/ponies with insulin levels above 45.2 µU/mL had a significantly higher risk(69%) of developing laminitis in the next 4 years. Laminitis is a devastating disease that causes inflammation in the feet. Many horses present with the same stance as the horse pictured below. A majority of cases are linked to endocrine abnormalities such as high insulin levels. So in 2026, as patients come in for yearly exams, we will be discussing and offering insulin testing. This is just one more step to try to keep our equine friends and athletes healthy and sound for years to come. If you have questions about insulin testing, please give us a call at 270-527-6655.

The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has seen a significant increase in Nocardioform placentitis equine abortions this breeding season. As of January 23, 2026, they have seen 36 cases. To put this in perspective, as of this time last year, 6 cases had been identified. Nocardioform placentitis will cause mares to bag up early and create pockets of mucopurulent material between the placenta and uterus, often times resulting in equine abortion if not treated quickly. UKVDL will be posting weekly updates on Wednesday's on their website with Nocardioform placentitis numbers. Foaling season has started and breeding season starts next week! At Kentucky Lake Equine Hospital, we highly recommend new foal exams at 12-24 hours after birth in our newborn foals. This exam is important to ensure the foal has an appropriate level of immunity from the colostrum and to ensure the foal does not suffer from any infectious diseases at birth. We will also examine the mare and her placenta. If you have questions about newborn foal exams or breeding your mare(s), please give us a call at 270-527-6655.

As the winter storm approaches, with the snow/ice and frigid temperatures, please be mindful of our equine friends. At a minimum, horses need fresh water, access to a salt block, and lots of hay to stay warm. Watch for snow packing in feet/shoes in horses staying outside. Dehydration can happen quickly in below freezing temperatures. If you notice any problems in your horse(s), please give us a call at 270-527-6655. Stay warm everyone!
