"Pill Pockets" are expensive!
Have you thought about making your own?
Perfect for getting pups to take their meds or supplements without a fight. These are way cheaper than store-bought and you can control what's in them.
Here are 3 easy ones that actually work:
*1. Peanut Butter Pill Pockets (most popular)*
- 2 tbsp peanut butter - 🚨MUST be xylitol-free, check label* - Natural PB with just peanuts is best! Try to avoid any kind of sugars or palm oils.
- 2 tbsp flour (whole wheat or oat flour works)
- 1 tbsp water or low-sodium broth
Mix peanut butter and flour, add water until it's like play-dough. Roll into little balls, press your thumb in to make a pocket, drop pill in, pinch closed. Makes about 10-12.
*2. Cheese Dough Pockets*
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp coconut oil, melted
Microwave cheese 10 sec to soften, mix in flour and oil. It gets pliable like dough. Same method - ball, thumb dent, pill, seal. Dogs love these warm.
*3. No-Fail Meatball Pockets (for picky dogs)*
- 2 tbsp plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
- 2 tbsp ground meat, cooked (chicken, turkey, beef)
- 1 tbsp oat flour to bind
Mix, form around pill. No baking needed. Keep refrigerated.
*Helpful Tips.....
▪️Make them small - pea to grape sized. You want them to swallow, not chew.
▪️ Make a few empty "decoys" - give 1 empty, then 1 with pill, then 1 empty. They gulp faster.
▪️ Store in fridge 4-5 days, or freeze for a month. Let thaw 5 min before use.
▪️If the pill is bitter, coat it lightly in butter first, then put in pocket - masks taste.
▪️ Don't use for time-release or enteric coated pills unless your vet says okay - check first.
