Doc Rob does a decent amount of regulatory work. Some of this includes milk testing dairy cows for bird flu. HPAI has been found in dairy cows in surrounding states but not Washington. To prevent the spread of disease, USDA requires all lactating dairy cattle crossing state lines to be milk tested for HPAI. The risk to humans getting HPAI through pasteurized milk is very low, but we do want to protect the dairy industry as it can make cows sick and compromise their milk supply. The milk sample is sent to an in-state lab; then, once negative results are confirmed, a health certificate is written, and cattle are shipped. There is only a 7 day period from time the sample is collected and when they are loaded on the trailer to cross state lines, so timing is everything.

It’s Wednesday! Did you know Doc Rob is the sale yard veterinarian for Central Washington Livestock, Inc.? Every Wednesday he is in Moses Lake, Wa for the livestock sale and may not be available for messaging or phone calls. If you’re having an emergency please contact a veterinarian in your area, otherwise feel free to leave a message and he will get back to you when he has availability. Thanks, and Happy Hump Day!

It’s that time of year! Doctor Rob has been off bull semen testing, also known as a Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE). BSE is a procedure that evaluates the quality of a bull's semen. Semen quality can change over time and can be affected by nutrition, disease, age, weather and other various factors. Testing your bulls before breeding season gives you time to find a replacement if needed.

A physical exam of the bull is done. A semen sample is collected using electro-ejaculation, then the semen sample is examined microscopically to evaluate s***m concentration, motility, and morphology.

Dr. Rob has had a busy week semen testing in Pomeroy, WA. Photo credit to Ledgerwood Gelbvieh and Rafter C Reds. Check out their bull sale March 8th between Pomeroy and Clarkston, WA (or online)!

Stole this from a vet friend in New Mexico, but good information for horse friends. Also, a reminder to practice good biosecurity as you travel with your horses!
Equine Infectious Anemia (what Coggins Testing is checking for) is considered a lifetime disease and positive horses are often euthanized in lieu of lifelong quarantine.
More info can be found below on the disease and the outbreak.
