Women's Animal Center Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training
PA Kennel License # 1516

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

You get a car, you get a car, you get a car! 🚗

Today is Subaru’s , and our shelter dogs are excited to celebrate with their new toys from Subaru!

Although we love getting to treat our shelter dogs, the best way to give dogs like Jojo and Frankie the best day ever is to give them a forever home! The generosity of our partners Reedman-Toll Subaru and Colonial Subaru helps us care for our shelter pets for as long as needed until they are adopted. We are fortunate to be able to give these pets food, shelter, and love, but the shelter will never be a substitute for a forever home.

Please share to help us and our partners at Subaru make these dogs’ day by finding them their forever homes! 🧡

We're PAW-sitively excited that our next Mini Paws Club event is less than two weeks away! 🍂

Kids ages 7-12 are invited to join our Mini Paws Club on Tuesday, November 3 from 12 PM - 3 PM to learn all about the animals that live in our backyards! Participants will learn about snakes, raccoons, deer, birds, and bugs through crafts and hands-on activities; take a tour of our facility; and get to meet some of our Animal Ambassadors!

The program takes place at Women’s Animal Center. Registration is $35, and is available now at womensanimalcenter.org. Limited space is available, so make sure to claim your child's spot today!

When 6 year-old Casey moved into her foster home in August, she had been struggling with life in the shelter. Being surrounded by unfamiliar animals, sounds, smells, and people can be overwhelming to some shelter pets, and Casey became stressed, scared, and shut down. But Casey's foster home quickly became her sanctuary, and in two short months she has blossomed into a completely different cat! 🐱

Within a couple weeks of being in her foster home, Casey went from hiding and avoiding her foster family to exploring, seeking out attention, and thriving like a cat should! She loves lounging and playing on her cat tree, roaming around the house, and hanging with her foster family. This once scared and shut down shelter cat is now much more confident and happy, and is more than ready to find her forever home.

Foster families provide comfortable respite and lifesaving care for pets with complex medical needs, kittens who need help eating and using the bathroom, and pets like Casey who have a hard time adjusting in a shelter setting. October is month, and our partners at Colonial Subaru have generously committed $4000 to help provide pets like Casey and their foster families with the tools they need to thrive in our shelter and beyond! 💙🚗

Casey is still living with her foster family, but is available for adoption now! If you are interested in meeting Casey, please call 215-942-6863 or email [email protected] for more information.
