Here are some helpful cold-weather tips for pet owners from Dr. Glanzberg.

For Dogs
1. Avoid salted walkways because the salt can burn and dry your dog's feet.

2. Check for ice balls between the toes when your dog comes back indoors.

3. Make sure there is a water supply for outdoor dogs that does not freeze.

4. Limit a puppy's exposure to cold weather, no matter what breed.

5. Ice and deep snow might seem fun, but can cause dangerous falls or stress the joints. Use good judgement!

6. Never lock your dog in a car for long periods during summer OR winter.

7. Antifreeze is poison for dogs and they like the taste, so don’t leave it around!

For Outdoor Cats
1. Keep water available and make sure it doesn't freeze.

2. Provide insulated shelter, (a box with blankets will work).

3. Give your cats extra food, but if you feed outside make sure you aren't just feeding wild animals!

4. Bang on the hood before starting your car as cats often seek shelter under the hood while it is still warm.

In general, Dr. Glanzberg does not recommend over-indulging our pets with people food, because it can cause stomach upset and obesity. However, if you do give your companion a little treat on this special all-American holiday, just make sure to do it in moderation. And no chocolate!

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
