Herd U Needed A Home

Herd U Needed A Home Herd U Needed A Home is a non-profit rescue for herding dogs in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Herding dogs come in all shapes, sizes and color.

At Herd U Needed A Home Rescue we are passionate about finding the best homes for our rescue dogs! We mainly work with herding type breeds (border collie, heeler, Australian shepherd, McNab), but we often rescue other breeds in need. They may have short, medium or long hair. Some are more energetic and some are more socialized. If you are looking for a great forever friend we will try our best to

match you with that dog. There is a huge need for loving homes. An we usually have a number of wonderful dogs awaiting placement. But it is very important that the dog and the new owner are matched correctly. And that's what we do best. Or, if you have a herding dog that you can no longer care for, contact us. We have a waiting list of approved adopters looking for a dog. Our organization will try to place your dog in a loving situation as soon as possible. All of our animals go to approved homes only. We also offer training assistance for any of our adopters. If you have any questions we are here to help! Our dogs come from all over the United States. When we receive an animal they are given a clean bill of health before being adopted out. They are spayed and neutered (if not already), vaccinated, receive all veterinary needs and are placed in a private foster home that treats each dog as a member of the family during their stay. That way we can inform you of each dog’s personality and idiosyncrasies before you take it home—something you cannot do in a shelter situation. Each of our foster dogs each has a unique story. At Herd U Needed A Home Rescue we do our very best to make sure that every story has a happy ending!

Hi there, I'm Jewel! 💎

I'm currently relaxing in my foster home in Bandon, OR, getting ready for my big debut in late June! My foster family says I am an absolute "jewel" of a young adult dog, and I have to agree.

I'm looking for a very specific kind of forever home. Could it be yours?

Here is what I'm looking for in my future family:

An active lifestyle: I love to run, walk, and hike! Oh and I enjoy the beach! If you need a trail buddy, I'm your girl.

A cozy couch and a warm bed: After a long hike, my absolute favorite thing to do is snuggle up with my person. I am a major cuddle bug and I expect to share the furniture!

A quiet neighborhood: City life is just too loud and busy for me. I'm looking for a calm, quiet home where I can peacefully relax.

A feline-free zone: I have a high prey drive, so I absolutely cannot live with cats or livestock.

Women: I am just a girls' girl at heart and strongly prefer the company of women!

I get along great with other dogs, so a canine sibling would be wonderful. My rescue is accepting pre-applications for me now while I finish settling in. If you think we'd be a perfect match, I'd love to hear from you!

Introducing Lucky!
Lucky is a very sweet boy who is still getting used to life in general. If you are looking for an outgoing and confident pup ready to take on the world, Lucky is not going to be your dog. If you are looking for a gentle, playful, easy-going and loving pup, Lucky might be your dog. Lucky just needs someone who has the time and patience to develop his confidence and mold him into the great dog that he will be.

Lucky is about 7 months old and had only ever been an outside dog until he came to us; he presently prefers to be outside. He is most content to explore the backyard and be out with everyone as they do chores and yard work. He can come to his name and sit. He seems to really enjoy following the lead of and playing with confident dogs. He has gone on a few short walks alongside his foster’s dog and loves sniffing and exploring. He has been good with cats and reported to be good with horses. He takes time and multiple slow interactions to warm up to new people, but is super snuggly, appreciative, attention seeking, and loving once he does.

Lucky currently sleeps in a crate just inside the foster’s backdoor. He has access to explore the house but has shown no interest in that so far. He goes to the bathroom outside, but due to not coming into the house (so far and by choice) there has been no opportunity to know how well that will translate to being fully potty trained.

Lucky has been making great progress as he gets used to his surroundings and people in the home. Initially, he will sit back, observe, and sniff from a distance in his new surroundings. When he gets nervous, goes into his crate or hides in the bushes around the yard. He will p*e submissively, both when he is nervous and when he is happy. This has improved as he has become more comfortable with his new surroundings. Experience with timid dogs or willingness to do some professional training will be helpful. He has been most responsive to a predictable routine, a quieter household, giving him some space and time to take things in, and confident, positive leadership.

Lucky is reported to be a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix and presently weighs about 30 pounds. He was born on November 13, 2025. Lucky is microchipped, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations. He is being fostered in Hood River, Oregon and his adoption fee is $400. If you are pre-approved and interested in adopting Lucky, please contact the adoption team at [email protected].
