šŸ‡ Bot Fly Larvae in Rabbits: What Every Rabbit Owner Should Know

Have you ever noticed a lump on your rabbit that seems to have a tiny hole in the center? It could be a bot fly larva (Cuterebra).

Bot flies lay their eggs near rabbit burrows and trails—not directly on the rabbit. As your rabbit passes by, the tiny larvae attach to the fur and burrow under the skin, where they develop. This often creates a firm swelling with a small breathing hole.

Signs to watch for:
• A round lump under the skin
• A small hole in the center of the lump
• Drainage or discharge
• Licking or scratching at the area

āš ļø Do not try to squeeze or remove the larva at home. If the larva ruptures, it can cause a severe inflammatory reaction or infection.

The good news? With prompt veterinary care, bot fly larvae can usually be removed safely, and most rabbits recover very well.

If you notice an unusual lump on your rabbit, give us a call. Early treatment is the safest and most comfortable option for your furry friend. šŸ’™
