The record low water levels and high temperatures we have been experiencing are a recipe for harmful algae blooms. Lava Lake currently has an algae bloom, so you and your pets should stay out! You can sign up on the Deschutes National Forest website to receive alerts:

Many of you know Licorice, one of our clinic cats. We are regrettably looking for a new home for him. Licorice has acted aggressively towards dogs recently. We are not sure what brought on this change of behavior. But because of this we can no longer let him roam in the lobby or greet clients at the door. If you would like to get more information about him, or know of someone that would give him a great home, please contact us. Licorice gets along fine with our other clinic cat and he likes people attention. But he should go to a home that does not have a dog.

Do you plan to travel to California with your dog? If so, our veterinarians recommend that you plan ahead and have your dog vaccinated for Canine Influenza (H3N2). Oakland has had confirmed cases of the virus, 100 dogs in a shelter are in quarantine and all adoptions have been halted. The Oregon Humane Society in Portland also has 3 dogs that were imported from California test positive for the influenza virus.
This virus spreads quickly and an infected dog can shed the virus for 26 days. Puppies, older dogs and those with compromised immune symptoms are at a higher risk.
It is recommended that you start the vaccination process weeks before you take off on your trip. An initial vaccine is given, followed 2-3 weeks later with a booster - however total immunity takes 4-6 weeks to develop.

* If you are traveling outside of Central Oregon we recommend Flea & Tick prevention. Put this topical medication on before leaving and then you won't need to worry about bringing fleas home!

* Heartworm prevention is also needed if you are traveling outside of Central Oregon, especially if you are traveling east or south. We need to test your dog for the presence or heartworms before we can write a prescription for the preventative medication.

* Be sure to get the kennel cough vaccine, Bordetella, if you are kenneling your dog or taking him/her to areas that have alot of dog traffic.
