As temperatures drop, rodents start looking for a way indoors, and so do the poisons meant to keep them out. Here's the catch: whatever makes rodenticide appealing to a mouse or rat often makes it appealing to pets too, so accidental ingestion is more common than people think.

There's also a secondary risk: a pet that catches and eats a rodent that's ingested poison but hasn't succumbed yet can become poisoned themselves, even if they never touched the bait directly.

If you ever suspect your pet got into some (directly or otherwise), don't wait it out, call us or an emergency clinic right away.

Fallen tree nuts might look harmless, or in the case of walnuts in their green hulls, suspiciously like a tennis ball your dog absolutely wants to chase. But tree nuts can cause serious harm if eaten, from stomach upset to intestinal blockages.

Keep an eye out on walks and in the yard this season, those piles under the trees aren't as innocent as they look.
