The essence of Modern dog training is understanding that it's impossible to teach a dog “don’t.” Don’t pull on leash, don’t jump on strangers, don’t chase the deer, don’t, don’t, don’t. However, it’s very easy to teach a dog “do.” Do walk calmly by my side, do sit politely for petting, do come instantly when I call. The difference is subtle, but significant. What do you want your dog to do instead? Once you have your “do’s” in place, you’ll be able to fix any problem that comes down the pike.

lots of "firsts" this past week for River.
1st long drive (to Cape Cod)
1st time without the other dogs
1st time at a new house
1st (and 2nd, 3rd, 4th) bus ride
1st (and 2nd) ferry ride
1st time in a ton of stores and around gazillion people/dogs
1st time at a museum and garden place
1st time on a golf cart type of vehicle (I was wiped out at that point and couldn't walk back to the car)
1st (and 2nd-8th. etc.) time on a beach with waves - at first he was nervous and within a few reps, he was running toward the waves and going in the ocean (and unfortunately was lapping up a little the salt water)

most likely some more 1sts that I'm not remembering

You know, every once in awhile I re-read this book and each and every time I cry and laugh at the same places. He taught me so very much, so that I could then help others through the rough times with their aggressive dog.

True story - in the storm we had here in NJ after Hurricane Sandy - I was sitting in my office and it sounded like someone was trying to open my front door. I jumped out of my chair, screamed "SHADOW HERE!"...and waited...after 2-3 seconds I remembered he had passed the year before...
