AKC Socialization Training Activity and Responsible Owner Class
In this class, you and your puppy will work as a team to accomplish the following to become certified as an AKC S. T. A. R. PUPPY:
Class Length: 6 weeks
For puppies ages 3 1/2 months to 9 1/2 months
Cost: $160.00
Socialize with other owners and their dogs in a controlled environment
Learn the appropriate amount of exercise or activity to meet your dog’s specific needs
Understand and learn the rules of responsible pet ownership
At the completion of the class, working as a team, your puppy will be evaluated by an AKC evaluator. After successfully passing the evaluation, your puppy will receive a certificate and metal recognizing them as an AKC S.T.A.R. puppy.
The Sampler Class-
Class Length: 6 weeks
For Dogs 4 months and older
Cost: $160.00
In this class you’ll have fun with your dog sampling different AKC performance skills. A different skill will be taught each week. It’s a way to introduce your dog to skills such as:
AKC Rally Obedience, AKC Agility, AKC Trick Dog, AKC Sent Work, and AKC Obedience.
AKC Canine Good Citizen Class-
For Dogs ages 10 months and older
Class Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $160.00
Positive training methods along with incentives such as toys and treats are used to teach you and your puppy how to work as a team. The instructor will teach the following skills to prepare you for testing and earning the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate.
• Accepting a friendly stranger
Evaluator approaches you and your dog pretending to shake hands while standing 6-12” away. The is done without touching the dog
• Sitting politely for petting
Evaluator will pet your dog while it sits in place without any display of shyness or resentment
• Appearance and grooming
Evaluator inspects your dog, combs or brushes lightly, examines ears and each front paw
• Out for a walk and stops
You will take your dog for a short walk, including making right and left and about turns
• Walking through a crowd
You and your dog will calmly walk close to several people. You dog may show casual interest but will stay under control
• Sit and down on cue/staying in place
Your dog will demonstrate the ability to sit and down when requested and the ability to remain calm when left at a distance of 20ft for a brief period
• Coming when called
You will walk 10 feet away from your dog and call the dog to you
• Reaction to another dog
You and your dog will calmly approach another classmate with their dog. Standing 6-12” apart you will exchange brief greetings and move on
• Reactions to distractions
Your dog will be exposed to distractions (pan falling, chair overturned) and not show panic or aggression
• Supervised separation
You will leave the area and leave your dog (on a 6” leash) with the instructor for 3 minutes. Your dog must remain calm while you’re gone.
