In a multidisciplinary hospital like ours, their role is especially important. RVTs don't simply support one veterinarian or perform one set of tasks.

They are nurses, technical professionals, patient advocates, educators and teammates who bring together clinical skills, communication and an understanding of how different areas of veterinary medicine connect.

BBVSH's Veterinary Technologist Internship (VTI) program is one way we help early-career technologists make the transition from school into specialty and emergency medicine.

Through structured, paid mentorship, interns progressively build their clinical skills while gaining experience in emergency and critical care, ICU nursing, anesthesia, diagnostics and specialty medicine. They also learn how to work as part of a multidisciplinary hospital team — communicating, prioritizing, asking questions and recognizing when a patient's changing needs require another person or service.

RVT Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the technical knowledge, adaptability, teamwork and commitment RVTs bring to patient care every day. This October, we're proud to celebrate the RVTs and VTSs at Boundary Bay and the important role they play within our larger hospital team.

For some RVTs, professional development eventually leads to becoming a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS).

VTS certification recognizes advanced knowledge and experience within a particular area of veterinary medicine, such as emergency and critical care, anesthesia and analgesia, internal medicine or dentistry. Reaching this level requires significant clinical experience, additional study and successful completion of the requirements established by the relevant specialty academy.

At BBVSH, we encourage RVTs to continue developing their skills through mentorship, in-house continuing education, Journal Clubs and opportunities such as RECOVER CPR certification. RVTs can also pursue VTS certification and advance into supervisory and mentorship roles.

That learning benefits the whole hospital. Experienced RVTs and VTSs share their knowledge with colleagues and help support newer members of the profession.

For RVTs working in Emergency and Critical Care, every shift can be different. Patients may arrive following trauma, experiencing respiratory distress, in shock, or with another serious or life-threatening condition.

These RVTs help triage and stabilize patients, support emergency procedures and provide advanced nursing care in the ER and ICU. Their skills can include blood typing and transfusion management, arterial and central lines, oxygen support, mechanical ventilation monitoring, feeding tubes and the close observation required when a critically ill patient's condition can change quickly.

It is work that requires technical skill, strong communication and the ability to prioritize and collaborate in high-pressure situations.

At BBVSH, our RVTs work within a VECCS Level I certified facility and VetCOT Level II Trauma Centre, helping connect emergency and critical care patients with specialists, advanced diagnostics and 24-hour ICU care when moments matter.

October is National Animal Safety Month, and while keeping pets safe starts at home, it doesn’t stop when they’re in our care ❤️

We know it’s not easy leaving your pet at the hospital and trusting someone else to care for them when you can’t be there.

That’s why there’s a whole team behind every patient who comes through our doors. From our board-certified specialists and emergency veterinarians, to the technicians and assistants caring for them throughout their stay, your pet has people paying attention to how they’re feeling, how they’re responding to treatment, and what they might need next.

And if something changes? Our team is right here, working together to make sure they get the care they need.

Because when you can’t be there to look out for them, we are 🐾

In Neurology, RVTs may care for patients with conditions such as traumatic brain injuries and support patients undergoing neurological procedures and monitoring.

In Cardiology, RVTs support the assessment and treatment of patients with heart conditions, including specialized cardiac procedures such as minimally invasive PDA closure.

Diagnostic Imaging supports patients across many of these services. RVTs help prepare and position patients and support the use of technologies such as radiography, ultrasound, CT and MRI when advanced imaging is needed as part of a patient's diagnosis or treatment.

The ability to work across disciplines is particularly valuable in a specialty hospital. Complex patients frequently need more than one service, and RVTs may be involved at several points along that patient's care journey — working with veterinarians and specialists, coordinating with other departments and working alongside veterinary assistants to help maintain continuity of care.

Helping Your Pet Maintain or Reach a Healthy Weight

Weight management doesn't need to mean making dramatic changes all at once. Start by talking with your family veterinarian about your pet's body condition and an appropriate weight goal.

Depending on your pet, recommendations may include measuring meals accurately, reviewing treats and extras, choosing an appropriate daily calorie intake, and adding safe, regular activity or enrichment. For pets with arthritis, heart or respiratory disease, mobility limitations or other medical conditions, feeding and exercise recommendations may need to be tailored to their individual needs.

For some pets, veterinary rehabilitation can also be part of a weight-management plan. At BBVSH, our Rehabilitation team works with patients from across the hospital, including many recovering from orthopedic surgery or managing mobility challenges. A rehabilitation plan can incorporate appropriate, progressive exercise to help improve mobility, build or maintain muscle and support weight-management goals.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one important way to help your pet move comfortably, manage other health conditions and enjoy as many healthy years as possible.

The Hidden Danger: Why Rat Poison is a Serious Threat to Your Pet

As the crisp air of fall sweeps across the Pacific Northwest, many of us welcome the cozy season. However, there's a less welcome visitor also seeking warmth and shelter: rodents. As rats and mice move indoors to escape the colder weather and dwindling outdoor food sources, many homeowners turn to rat and mouse poisons, or rodenticides, to control these pests.

Unfortunately, what's lethal for rodents can be just as deadly for our beloved pets.

This increase in rodenticide use during the fall makes it a particularly critical time for pet owners to be vigilant. At Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Surrey we frequently see the devastating effects of these toxins. Let's break down why this is such a critical issue and what you, as a pet owner, need to know.
