🐾 Puppy Safety PSA – The First 16 Weeks Matter 🐾

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting — and those first weeks are so important!
Even though your puppy has started vaccines, their immune system is still developing until their final puppy shots (around 16 weeks of age).

Most serious puppy illnesses happen after puppies go home, simply from early exposure and stress.

Please avoid until vaccines are complete:
❌ Pet stores
❌ Dog parks & public parks
❌ Vet office floors (carry puppy in & out)
❌ Rest stops & sidewalks
❌ Playdates with unknown or unvaccinated dogs

🦠 Viruses like parvo can live in soil and on surfaces for months or years— even when you can’t see them.

Safe socialization DOES still happen!
✔ Visiting trusted friends’ homes
✔ Meeting fully vaccinated, healthy adult dogs
✔ Car rides, strollers, wagons, or being carried in public
✔ New sounds, surfaces, and handling at home

Go-home transition tips:
• Keep puppy on the same food for at least 2 weeks
• Avoid sudden diet changes
• Limit visitors the first few days
• Keep routines calm and predictable
• Consider a canine probiotic to support gut health during this transition

💡 Stress alone can cause loose stools, appetite changes, and immune dips in young puppies.

Important reminder:
Early vaccines help build immunity — they don’t fully protect yet.

👉 When in doubt:
If unknown dogs have been there, your puppy shouldn’t be.

One of the questions I get asked all the time is, "Why does my puppy always seem to have to p**p right after they eat?"

Believe it or not, it's not just coincidence it's actually something called the gastrocolic reflex, and it's completely normal!

When puppies eat, their stomach stretches and sends a signal to their intestines that it's time to get things moving. Because their digestive systems are still developing, this reflex is especially strong in young puppies. That's why so many of them need to go potty within just a few minutes after finishing a meal.

Knowing this little bit of biology can make potty training so much easier! Instead of waiting until your puppy starts sniffing or circling, try taking them outside 5–15 minutes after every meal (and right after naps and playtime too). You're working with their natural body instead of against it, which helps set them up for success.

Remember, accidents don't mean your puppy is being stubborn they're still learning. Be patient, stay consistent, celebrate the wins, and before you know it, they'll start understanding exactly what's expected of them.

Here at Akin's Miniature Dachshunds LLC we give dexamethasone to prevent vaccine reactions in adults and puppies. Since starting this protocol years ago with our vet we have had ZERO vaccine reactions. Even to vaccines containing lepto and rabies which are two of the most common that the dachshund breed will react to! :)
