🦠 MYCOTOXINS — IT’S NOT JUST A CORN PROBLEM

We’ve been talking about corn in horse diets, but that brings up a much bigger subject:

MYCOTOXINS.

And I don’t want anyone walking away thinking this is simply a ā€œcorn problem.ā€

It isn’t.

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds. Depending on growing conditions, harvest, processing and storage, they can potentially show up in a variety of feeds horses consume.

Potential sources can include:

🌽 Corn
🌾 Oats
🌾 Barley
🌾 Wheat and other cereal grains
🌱 Pasture grasses
🌾 Hay and forage
🄣 Feed ingredients and byproducts made from affected crops
🐓 Finished feeds containing contaminated ingredients

MOLD ≠ MYCOTOXINS

This distinction is important.

Not every mold produces harmful mycotoxins.

And the opposite is important too:

You can’t assume feed is free of mycotoxins because you can’t see or smell mold.

Some contamination begins while the crop is still growing. Other problems develop or worsen around harvest and storage.

Heat, humidity, crop stress, insect damage, improper drying and moisture during storage can all influence the risk.

WHICH MYCOTOXINS MATTER TO HORSE OWNERS?

There are many, but several you’ll hear discussed in animal feeds include:

āš ļø Fumonisins
āš ļø Aflatoxins
āš ļø DON (vomitoxin)
āš ļø Zearalenone
āš ļø T-2 and related trichothecenes

Horses are particularly sensitive to fumonisins. Significant exposure can cause equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM), a serious and potentially fatal neurologic disease.

WHAT DO MYCOTOXINS LOOK LIKE IN A HORSE?

Here’s where we need to be careful.

There isn’t one universal ā€œmycotoxin symptom.ā€

Depending on the toxin, concentration, amount consumed, duration of exposure and the individual horse, problems can be very different.

Possible concerns can include:

• Reduced appetite or feed refusal
• Poor body condition
• Digestive disturbances
• Reduced performance
• General unthriftiness
• Liver or kidney injury with certain toxins
• Immune-system effects
• Neurologic signs with severe fumonisin exposure

And many of those signs can have dozens of other causes.

That’s why I don’t like diagnosing ā€œmycotoxinsā€ simply because a horse doesn’t feel right.

šŸŒ¬ļø WHAT ABOUT A COUGHING HORSE?

A constantly coughing horse absolutely makes me investigate its feed AND environment.

But coughing does not automatically mean mycotoxins.

I’m looking at:

🌾 Dusty or moldy hay
šŸ’Ø Airborne mold spores
šŸ›ļø Dusty bedding
šŸ  Poor barn ventilation
🐓 Equine asthma/airway inflammation
🦠 Respiratory infection
🌿 Environmental allergens
🄣 Feed quality and storage

Sometimes the mold itself and the dust/spores the horse is inhaling are a much more direct respiratory concern than a mycotoxin contained in the feed.

šŸ›”ļø WHERE DOES KOMBAT KLEER FIT?

When undesirable compounds in feed or the environment are a concern, Kombat Kleer can be considered as nutritional support.

But this is REALLY important:

A support product doesn’t make contaminated feed safe.

If I genuinely suspect a batch of hay or feed is contaminated, my first response isn’t:

ā€œWhat can I add to the bucket?ā€

It’s:

ā€œShould this still BE in the bucket?ā€

Remove questionable feed, investigate the source and consider laboratory testing when warranted.

MY DO’S & DON’TS

āœ… DO buy hay and feed from sources you trust.

āœ… DO store feed somewhere clean, dry and protected from moisture.

āœ… DO inspect hay and grain regularly.

āœ… DO pay attention when a horse suddenly refuses a feed it normally eats.

āœ… DO consider laboratory testing when there’s a legitimate reason to suspect contamination.

āœ… DO investigate chronic coughing separately—the horse may be inhaling dust or mold even when mycotoxins aren’t the problem.

āŒ DON’T assume only corn can have mycotoxins.

āŒ DON’T assume ā€œnatural,ā€ whole grain or expensive feed automatically means mycotoxin-free.

āŒ DON’T assume that because you can’t SEE mold, there can’t be a problem.

āŒ DON’T feed visibly spoiled or questionable feed and expect a supplement to make it okay.

āŒ DON’T diagnose every vague symptom as ā€œmycotoxins.ā€

🐓 THE TAKEAWAY

Mycotoxins aren’t an ingredient. They’re a feed-quality problem.

They can potentially occur in grains, forage and other ingredients.

Know where your horse’s food comes from.

Store it correctly.

Pay attention to changes in smell, texture, moisture and your horse’s willingness to eat it.

And remember:

The best mycotoxin strategy starts before anything ever goes into the feed bucket.

🌽 SHOULD HORSES EAT CORN?

I was recently asked about a horse being fed corn that is also coughing.

First things first:

Corn does not automatically = coughing.

A horse that coughs frequently needs the cause of the cough investigated. Hay dust, mold, poor ventilation, environmental allergens, airway inflammation and infection are all possibilities.

But the question opened the door to another important conversation:

🌽 Just because a horse WILL eat something doesn’t mean we should feed a lot of it.

Horses evolved to eat primarily forage—grasses and other fibrous plants—throughout the day.

Corn is very different.

Corn is:

* Very calorie dense
* High in starch
* Relatively low in fiber compared with forage
* Not nutritionally balanced by itself
* Easy to overfeed because a relatively small amount contains a lot of energy

āŒ DON’T use large amounts of corn as the foundation of a horse’s diet.

The horse has a limited ability to digest starch in the small intestine at one time.

When too much starch escapes digestion and reaches the hindgut, bacteria rapidly ferment it. That can alter hindgut pH and disrupt the microbial population.

That is exactly what we DON’T want.

Excessive starch reaching the hindgut can contribute to:
āš ļø digestive upset
āš ļø gas/colic risk
āš ļø loose manure
āš ļø hindgut disruption
āš ļø increased laminitis risk in susceptible horses

āŒ DON’T assume more grain = more energy = better performance.

A horse can consume plenty of calories and still have a poorly balanced diet.

More corn doesn’t automatically create more muscle, stamina or speed.

āŒ DON’T feed grain by the coffee can or scoop.

WEIGH IT.

A scoop tells you volume—not weight.

And when we’re talking about starch, the amount consumed per meal matters.

āŒ DON’T ignore the rest of the ration.

Ask:

What hay is the horse eating?

How much?

Is it clean and free of mold and excessive dust?

Does the horse have forage available throughout the day?

Is the overall diet providing adequate protein, amino acids, minerals and vitamins?

Those questions matter far more than whether a particular grain is fashionable.

āœ… DO make FORAGE the foundation.

The equine digestive system was built around frequent consumption of fibrous forage.

For most horses, I want to see the majority of their diet coming from good-quality grass, hay and/or appropriate pasture.

āœ… DO choose concentrates based on what the horse actually NEEDS.

Some hardworking horses and hard keepers genuinely need concentrated calories.

That’s okay.

But there is a big difference between strategically adding calories and simply pouring more grain into the bucket.

🌽 So is corn BAD?

No.

Corn isn’t poison, and there’s no reason to scare people about an ingredient simply because it’s corn.

Properly processed corn can be a useful energy source in a correctly formulated equine diet.

The problem is quantity, preparation, meal size and the entire ration surrounding it.

šŸŒ¬ļø AND ABOUT THAT COUGH…

If your horse coughs occasionally when first starting work, that’s worth noticing.

If your horse is coughing repeatedly, coughing while eating, coughing at rest or coughing day after day—don’t just change the grain and assume you’ve fixed it.

Look at the horse’s entire environment:

🌾 Is the hay dusty?
🌾 Is there mold?
šŸ’Ø Is the barn well ventilated?
šŸ›ļø Is the bedding dusty?
🚚 Is the horse spending hours in a dusty trailer?
🐓 Does exercise trigger the coughing?

And if the coughing persists, involve your veterinarian.

Airway problems can affect a horse’s comfort and performance long before they look seriously sick.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Feed the horse in front of you—not the feed scoop.

Start with quality forage.

Know what you’re feeding.

Know WHY you’re feeding it.

Keep individual grain meals reasonable.

Balance the entire diet.

And when a horse is coughing constantly, don’t blame one ingredient and don’t ignore the symptom. Find out why.

A bucketful of corn is not a feeding program.

🐓 ā€œWHAT SHOULD I PUT ON THIS WOUND?ā€

Probably one of the most common horse-owner questions ever.

And my answer isn’t automatically:

ā€œPut _____ on it.ā€

My first question is:

WHAT KIND OF WOUND ARE WE DEALING WITH?

Because a superficial scrape, a fresh deep laceration, a puncture wound and a wound that’s been open for three weeks are NOT the same situation.

And before we talk products, we need to talk about something really important:

🚨 SOME WOUNDS NEED A VETERINARIAN FIRST.

Call your veterinarian for:

• Deep or gaping wounds
• Significant bleeding
• Puncture wounds
• Wounds over or near a joint or tendon sheath
• Wounds involving the eye
• Exposed bone, tendon or other deeper structures
• Severe swelling or lameness
• Contaminated wounds you can’t adequately clean
• Wounds that aren’t progressing normally
• Fever, increasing heat, pain, swelling, odor or drainage

A tiny puncture can sometimes be much more serious than an ugly-looking superficial wound.

šŸ’§ STEP ONE: CLEAN IT.

Before I start covering a wound with products, I want dirt and contamination out.

For many fresh wounds, plenty of clean water or sterile saline is incredibly useful.

One product in my toolbox is Dynamite Wound Wash.

Dynamite designed Wound Wash as a gentle cleanser to help remove dirt and debris before applying other topical products.

Sometimes good wound care starts with something very simple:

CLEAN IT WITHOUT DESTROYING THE HEALTHY TISSUE WE’RE TRYING TO GROW.

More aggressive isn’t always better.

🌿 DYNAMITE WOUND SALVE

Once a wound is appropriately cleaned and we’ve determined that it’s suitable for topical management, Dynamite Wound Salve is another option I keep available.

It’s a beeswax-based herbal salve containing tea tree oil along with other botanical ingredients.

This is the kind of product I think about when we’re trying to:

protect + soothe + support the healing environment.

But here’s an important point:

I don’t automatically pack every fresh wound full of salve.

Sometimes the veterinarian needs to evaluate, explore, flush or suture that wound first.

🟤 DYNAMITE BALM

Balm isn’t exactly the same tool as Wound Salve.

Dynamite’s Balm is a mineral-based topical combined with olive oil and other ingredients.

I tend to think beyond the initial dirty-wound stage with this one.

Skin condition.

Dryness.

Healing tissue.

Scar-tissue management.

Areas that need continued topical support.

Different stage.

Different goal.

🟢 SPURR’S BIG FIX

This is another interesting product because it takes a more antiseptic-style approach.

Spurr’s contains ingredients including:

• Iodine
• Tea tree oil
• Alcohol
• Eucalyptus
• Menthol
• Glycerin

It’s marketed for wounds, cuts, lacerations and several bacterial/fungal skin problems.

That makes it another tool I might consider depending on what the skin or wound actually looks like.

But remember:

MORE ANTIMICROBIAL ISN’T ALWAYS MORE HEALING.

Healthy new cells are trying to grow across that wound.

Our goal isn’t to repeatedly assault the tissue.

Our goal is to create an environment where healthy tissue can repair itself while controlling contamination appropriately.

🩶 SILVER HORSE CARE WOUND & SKIN FOAM

Silver gives us another topical approach.

The Silver Horse Care Wound & Skin Foam contains colloidal silver and is designed as a gentle, non-stinging topical for cuts, scrapes and irritated skin.

This is particularly convenient when I want something:

easy to apply + gentle + topical antimicrobial support.

And because we were just talking about biofilms…

🦠 LET’S TALK WOUND BIOFILM.

Some chronic wounds can develop communities of bacteria surrounded by a protective matrix called a biofilm.

Think of it almost like bacteria building themselves a protected neighborhood.

Once established, those organisms can become much harder to eliminate.

That’s one reason a wound can appear to:

heal…stall…get irritated…improve…stall again.

But here’s the important part:

You cannot look at every slimy or slow-healing wound and declare:

ā€œBIOFILM!ā€

And simply spraying an antimicrobial product over an established biofilm isn’t necessarily enough.

Veterinary wound management may involve:

CLEANING + LAVAGE + DEBRIDEMENT + APPROPRIATE TOPICAL THERAPY

because physically disrupting the biofilm can be an important part of controlling it.

Silver-containing wound products are interesting in this area because silver has antimicrobial activity and has been investigated in wound management.

But I would NOT tell you:

ā€œSilver Horse Care Foam destroys equine wound biofilms.ā€

That’s a much stronger claim than the available evidence supports for that specific product.

I would tell you:

It’s one of the topical antimicrobial-support tools available in my wound-care toolbox.

ā¤ļø HERE’S MY WOUND-CARE PHILOSOPHY:

Don’t ask only:

ā€œWHAT CAN I PUT ON IT?ā€

Ask:

ā€œWHAT DOES THIS WOUND NEED RIGHT NOW?ā€

Does it need:

šŸ’§ Cleaning?

🩺 Veterinary evaluation?

🧵 Sutures?

🦠 Infection management?

āœ‚ļø Debridement?

🩹 Protection?

🌱 Support for healthy new tissue?

🐓 Or simply TIME and an environment that allows the horse’s body to heal?

That’s why I carry several wound products.

Not because every wound needs all of them.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT.

AT THE RIGHT STAGE.

FOR THE RIGHT WOUND.

And sometimes the most important thing in my wound-care kit isn’t a bottle at all.

It’s my veterinarian’s phone number.

A horse pinning its ears, biting, kicking, swishing its tail, moving away or threatening when cinched can have several causes:

* Gastric discomfort/ulcers: definitely on the differential, particularly with other signs such as appetite changes, poor performance or recurrent discomfort. But cinchiness alone doesn’t diagnose ulcers; gastroscopy is needed to confirm gastric disease.
* Saddle/girth fit: I’d look closely here. Pressure behind the elbow, sternum or pectorals, a girth pulling the saddle forward, uneven pressure, saddle bridging/rocking, or pain under the tree can all produce very similar behavior.
* Back/rib/muscle pain: thoracic back pain, sore intercostals, pectorals or latissimus can make tightening a cinch uncomfortable.
* Sternum/xiphoid area: easily overlooked. A horse that’s particularly reactive to pressure underneath the chest deserves a physical examination rather than automatically being labeled ulcer-y.
* Lameness: this surprises people. Pain elsewhere can present as behavior during saddling. A horse anticipating that riding hurts may begin objecting as soon as the saddle appears.
* Reproductive discomfort in mares: ovarian/reproductive issues belong on the differential in the appropriate horse, although ā€œshe’s just hormonalā€ shouldn’t be the default explanation.
* Skin: girth galls, dermatitis, fungal/bacterial irritation, insect bites, edema or simply tender skin under the girth.
* Learned anticipation: especially important. If cinching used to hurt, the horse can continue anticipating discomfort even after the physical problem has been corrected. That should be considered after checking for pain, not used as an excuse to dismiss the behavior.

And there’s one distinction I’d really emphasize:

When did the cinchiness start?

A horse that has always been mildly opinionated about tightening the girth is different from a horse that stood quietly for three years and suddenly starts trying to bite when saddled.

New or escalating behavior = investigate pain first.

I’d also watch when the reaction occurs. Reaction when touching the girth area before the saddle is even on points us differently than reaction only when the saddle is tightened. A horse fine during saddling but uncomfortable once mounted makes me look harder at saddle/back/lameness. A horse that also has appetite/performance changes or other GI signs keeps gastric disease higher on my list.

ā€œMY HORSE IS CINCHY—DOES THAT MEAN ULCERS?ā€

No. It means your horse is telling you tightening the cinch has become unpleasant. Our job is to figure out WHY.

🐓 WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN MY ULCER & DIGESTIVE TOOLBOX?

I carry several digestive-support products.

And here’s something that may surprise you:

I DON’T THINK EVERY HORSE NEEDS THE SAME ONE.

I also don’t believe in automatically stacking five ā€œgut supplementsā€ together because a horse is cinchy, grouchy or doesn’t want to eat at a barrel race.

First I want to know:

What are we actually trying to accomplish?

Is this horse dealing with:

šŸ”ø Diagnosed gastric ulcers?
šŸ”ø Suspected gastric discomfort?
šŸ”ø Hindgut upset?
šŸ”ø Loose manure?
šŸ”ø Stress from hauling or competition?
šŸ”ø A feed change?
šŸ”ø Poor appetite?
šŸ”ø Poor digestive efficiency?
šŸ”ø Or simply a horse that needs better long-term digestive support?

Those are NOT necessarily the same problem.

Here’s how I look at some of the tools in my toolbox:

🟤 DYNAMITE MIRACLE CLAY

Think short-term digestive/gastric support rather than a daily ā€œeverything gutā€ supplement.

Dynamite places Miracle Clay in its ulcer/digestive-support program.

Clay-based products can have adsorptive properties, which is one reason they’re interesting in digestive applications.

Would I tell you Miracle Clay replaces veterinary treatment for a diagnosed gastric ulcer?

No.

Could it have a place in a horse’s digestive-support program?

Yes.

🟠 ZESTERRA

Zesterra takes a different approach.

It’s a liquid containing ingredients including oils, fatty acids, orange peel bitters, guar gum and colloidal silver.

The manufacturer specifically recommends it for gastric support, stressful situations, hauling and ulcer-prone horses.

This is one I would describe as:

Gastric/digestive support—particularly around stress.

The company makes strong claims regarding ulcers, but I still distinguish between manufacturer claims and independent clinical evidence demonstrating healing of diagnosed gastric lesions.

🟢 KOMBAT BOOTS

This one belongs in a different category.

Kombat Boots is primarily yeast-based digestive support.

I’m thinking:

HINDGUT.

The horse’s cecum and colon contain an enormous microbial population responsible for fermenting fiber.

Yeast products can help support the hindgut microbial environment and fiber digestion.

So when I’m talking about:

🌾 Digestive efficiency
šŸ’© Manure consistency
🦠 Hindgut microbial support
🌱 Fiber utilization
🐓 Overall digestive health

Kombat Boots becomes an interesting tool.

That’s different from saying:

ā€œThis heals stomach ulcers.ā€

Foregut and hindgut health are connected—but they aren’t interchangeable.

šŸ”µ TECHMIX COLOSTRU-BOOST

This is another completely different approach.

Colostru-Boost uses bioactive components derived from colostrum.

Depending on the specific Colostru-Boost product, TechMix positions the line for support of the stomach, foregut, hindgut, digestive tract, recovery and performance.

This is one I particularly like discussing with:

šŸ‡ Performance horses
šŸš› Horses that haul frequently
šŸ† Competition stress
šŸ”„ Horses going through management changes
ā¤ļø Horses needing additional GI/recovery support

Again:

SUPPORT—not a promise that it cures diagnosed ulcers.

SUCCEED is interesting because its philosophy isn’t simply:

ā€œNeutralize stomach acid.ā€

It’s designed around supporting the entire digestive tract.

Its formulation includes things such as oat-derived ingredients, soluble fiber/beta-glucan, polar lipids and other nutritional components intended to support the intestinal environment and mucosal health.

So I tend to think of SUCCEED as:

LONG-TERM WHOLE-GI SUPPORT

rather than something I’d grab only when a horse suddenly acts ulcer-y.

🌿 SILVER HORSE CARE STABILIZE BIOTIC

Here’s another category:

MICROBIOME SUPPORT.

When I’m thinking about maintaining a healthy microbial population—especially with horses experiencing dietary or environmental stress—this type of product enters the conversation.

Again, we’re primarily talking about supporting digestive and microbial balance, not claiming we’re medicating a stomach lesion.

🌾 SYMPHONY

Sometimes the answer isn’t adding another ā€œulcer supplement.ā€

Sometimes we need to look at the horse’s entire nutritional program.

That’s where a product such as Symphony fits differently into my toolbox.

If the overall ration isn’t providing what the horse needs—or we’re relying heavily on high-starch concentrate meals—I’d rather address the foundation than continually add products trying to compensate for the diet.

Because:

YOU CAN’T OUT-SUPPLEMENT BAD MANAGEMENT.

🧰 SO WHICH ONE WOULD I CHOOSE?

That’s the point.

I NEED TO KNOW THE HORSE.

A horse with confirmed gastric ulcers may need veterinary treatment.

A horse with chronic loose manure may have me thinking much more about the hindgut.

A horse that quits eating every time we haul may need a completely different strategy.

A hard-working performance horse may benefit from long-term whole-GI support.

And sometimes…

The horse doesn’t need another supplement at all.

Maybe we need:

🌾 More forage
🄬 Some alfalfa
ā° Shorter periods without food
🄣 Smaller concentrate meals
šŸ’§ Better hydration
🐓 More turnout
šŸš› Better hauling/competition feeding practices
🩺 Or a veterinarian and a gastroscope.

ā¤ļø THAT’S WHY I CARRY OPTIONS.

Not because I want to sell you every bucket on the shelf.

Because I want to be able to say:

ā€œTell me about your horse.ā€

What are you feeding?

How much forage?

How long are they without food?

What does their manure look like?

What happens when you haul?

What symptoms are you seeing?

Have they actually been scoped?

And THEN let’s decide which tool makes sense.

DON’T JUST BUY AN ā€œULCER SUPPLEMENT.ā€

Figure out what part of the digestive system you’re trying to support.

Because the stomach, small intestine and hindgut are all part of the same horse—

but they aren’t the same problem.

🐓 ā€œULCER SUPPLEMENTS—WHAT INGREDIENTS ACTUALLY HAVE EVIDENCE?ā€

Walk into a feed store or scroll through Facebook and you’ll find dozens of products promising gastric support.

Buffers.

Herbs.

Oils.

Pectin.

Lecithin.

Aloe.

Prebiotics.

Probiotics.

And some pretty expensive buckets.

So here’s the question I think horse owners should be asking:

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SAY?

First, an important distinction:

A supplement that supports gastric health is NOT automatically equivalent to a medication proven to heal diagnosed gastric ulcers.

And remember—we’re dealing with TWO different problems:

šŸ”ø ESGD — squamous gastric disease

šŸ”ø EGGD — glandular gastric disease

Something that helps one isn’t necessarily proven to help the other.

🟢 PECTIN + LECITHIN

This combination actually has some interesting research behind it.

Pectin forms a gel-like substance in an acidic environment and may help protect the stomach lining.

Lecithin contains phospholipids that may help strengthen the protective hydrophobic barrier of the gastric mucosa.

Studies of pectin/lecithin-containing products have produced some encouraging results—although not every study has shown a benefit.

So I’d put this ingredient combination in:

šŸ‘‰ PROMISING—with some actual research behind it.

🟢 SEA BUCKTHORN

Another interesting one.

Research has found that sea buckthorn berry supplementation may help protect the glandular portion of the stomach under certain conditions.

Does that mean sea buckthorn cures glandular ulcers?

No.

But there’s enough evidence that I wouldn’t dismiss it as simply marketing.

šŸ‘‰ PROMISING FOR GASTRIC SUPPORT.

🟢 MAGNESIUM-BASED BUFFERING

Magnesium compounds can buffer stomach acid.

Research using magnesium oxide has shown improvement in squamous-ulcer scores in some horses.

But here’s something people don’t always realize:

Buffers don’t shut down acid production like omeprazole does.

A horse continuously produces stomach acid.

So simply putting a buffering ingredient in a supplement doesn’t automatically make that product equivalent to ulcer medication.

šŸ‘‰ USEFUL TOOL—but understand what it actually does.

🟔 ALOE VERA

This one gets recommended constantly.

There is some research showing improvement in squamous lesions with aloe vera.

BUT…

When aloe was compared directly with omeprazole, omeprazole performed better.

That’s a perfect example of:

ā€œMay provide benefitā€

being very different from:

ā€œThis replaces proven treatment.ā€

🟔 OILS & FATTY ACIDS

This category gets interesting.

Certain fats and fatty acids may influence gastric acid secretion and the stomach’s protective mechanisms.

But results aren’t consistent across studies.

Oil can still be extremely useful because it allows us to provide calories while reducing reliance on high-starch feeds.

So sometimes the biggest gastric benefit isn’t that oil is an ā€œulcer treatment.ā€

It’s that:

OIL CAN HELP US BUILD A LOWER-STARCH DIET.

Don’t overlook FOOD while you’re shopping for supplements.

Alfalfa’s relatively high calcium and protein content gives it natural buffering properties.

For many ulcer-prone performance horses, strategically feeding alfalfa—particularly around exercise—can be one of the simplest nutritional tools available.

But glandular disease is complicated, and emerging research means I wouldn’t treat ā€œfeed lots of alfalfaā€ as a universal prescription for every ulcer horse.

🚩 WHAT MAKES ME SKEPTICAL?

A label with 15 impressive-looking ingredients doesn’t automatically impress me.

I want to know:

HOW MUCH of each ingredient is actually in the daily serving?

Is that amount comparable to what was studied?

Is the company showing research on:

THE ACTUAL PRODUCT?

Or are they taking research performed on individual ingredients and implying that their entire formula has been proven?

Those are VERY different things.

šŸ’° AND EXPENSIVE DOESN’T MEAN EFFECTIVE.

A $150 bucket isn’t automatically better than:

🌾 More consistent forage

🌱 An appropriate lower-starch ration

šŸ’§ Plenty of water

🐓 More turnout

🄬 Strategic alfalfa

šŸ‡ Feeding forage before exercise

…and appropriate veterinary treatment when ulcers are actually present.

ā¤ļø MY APPROACH

For a horse with suspected ulcers:

DIAGNOSE FIRST.

If ulcers are present, determine whether we’re dealing with:

SQUAMOUS, GLANDULAR—or BOTH.

Treat appropriately.

Then build a feeding and management program designed to reduce recurrence.

And THEN choose supplements based on ingredients and evidence rather than whichever bucket has the best marketing.

🐓 BECAUSE THERE’S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN:

ā€œSupports gastric health.ā€

and

ā€œHEALS GASTRIC ULCERS.ā€

Those aren’t interchangeable statements.

I absolutely believe nutritional support has a place.

I just want horse owners spending their money on something that makes sense for their horse and the problem they’re actually trying to solve.
