Hey Kavalry, Let's Help Hayes Out!
Hello! My name is Hayes Holland. I'm looking for a place to keep my cattle for the 2026-2027 school year.
Here's a little bit about me. I'm 18 years old, a current Montana State University freshman pursuing a degree in Ranching Systems, and the 2026-2027 Montana State FFA President.
I started my own cowherd 2 years ago and have grown it to 2 pairs, 5 bred heifers, a bull, and whatever feeders I can buy to fatten up, butcher, and sell beef. I aspire to run a ranch where I run both commercial and registered cattle, sell seedstock and beef, and run a camp for kids like me who don't come from generational production agriculture, but want to learn.
I currently keep my cattle at my homeplace in Belgrade, Montana, but taking care of them has proven to be quite a challenge living on campus. It has begun to become a partial responsibility of my family, which isn't fair to them since this is my herd, not my family's. I am also concerned about my heifers who will begin calving in February, and how that will go with me being so far away.
With that in mind, I want to begin searching for a place closer to the Montana State University campus where I may be able to keep them. I know it would be easiest to sell, but I have dreams of growing this into something way bigger. Plus, I've invested a lot of my money, time, and character into my humble herd, and I don't want it to be all for nothing when I can continue to grow it and learn from it.
I don't have a lot of money to spend on a place, and in a perfect world I would be able to exchange labor for facilities, but I understand if that isn't possible. But if anybody has some land with a few pens or corrals that aren't in use, preferably with power and water available, please let me know and I would love to work something out!
Please consider that I am very responsible and hardworking, and dedicated to this line of work. I also would be beyond willing to maintain the property, care for other animals on-site, or anything else to offset the cost.
