This weekend is supposed to be our first below freezing temps for the season. Here are somethings we do in September/Fall to prep for cold weather:
-scrub out and deep clean all waters
-replenish all salt on property
-make sure our horse blankets are cleaned and repaired from last season
-make sure our boilers and barn heating system has been professionally serviced.
-all stocked up (and stacked up!) on hay for the winter
-filled up on everyone’s grain and supplements for the month
-stocked up on shavings for main barn horses
-this week the horses all got Fall boosters, teeth floated, sheath cleanings, so all are settled and adjusted before the cold snap.
-all irrigation on property has been blown out
-septics are pumped
-side by sides and tractors are serviced and fueled up
-taxes are paid (Due in November here - don’t forget!)
-fences have been repaired and checked.
-grass around property has been cut for the last time till spring.
It’s not just the twice a day feedings and stall cleaning, it’s thinking ahead and getting prepared so we can to provide the best days possible for these four legged friends of ours.
