Happy Veterinary Technician Week!!

It is that time of year again when we get to officially celebrate how absolutely amazing our veterinary technicians are!!!

I am so fortunate to work with Molly, Candice, Ashlee, and Gabby. Having fantastic technicians and assistants is vital to every veterinarians life and I truly have four of the best!!!

It's National Feral Cat Day!😺

In 2025, The Baltimore Sun wrote an article and it was estimated that there are more than 86,000 in the city alone. Feral cat populations are responsible for about 10% of Rabies exposures in the state of Maryland. Shelters around Baltimore City took in almost 22,000 stray/feral cats in 2023.
Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs do what they can to help population control through sterilization. Locally, Shadow Cats TNR completed 2,198 TNR procedures in 2025 and have completed 1,365 so far this year! They also find homes for adoptable cats, including barn cats.

If you are able to donate to them, they can get all of the help they need. There are also volunteer opportunities with their program.

October is National Pet Obesity Awareness Month😺🐶

Did you know that about 59% of dogs and roughly 61% of cats are overweight in America?

At each physical exam they are given a BCS score which stands for Body Condition Scale. Some veterinarians use a 5-point scale while others use a 9-point scale. Using a score out of 5, a 3 is considered ideal. Using a score out of 9, a 5 is considered ideal.

It's estimated that only 1/3 of pet owners understand what an appropriate body weight is for their pet. Carrying around extra pounds can decrease your pet's life span by up to 2.5 years. Some pets require a prescription diet to help manage their weight.

Today is National Puppy Mill Survivor Day❤️

Puppy Mills are defined as inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities that may sell puppies in pet stores, online or directly to the public.

According to Humane World for Animals, it is estimated that there are at least 10,000 puppy mills in the United States, fewer than 3,000 of which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In this area, Pennsylvania remains to be a hotbed for Puppy Mills. The most popular being Greenfield Puppies - a broker and advertising platform for Puppy Mills, prodominantly Amish-run breeding facilities.

If you are looking to add a puppy to your family, we encourage you to work with a responsible breeder that is looking to better the breed they are specificlly working with. Alternatively, you can adopt from a local or breed-specific rescue if that is feasible for your family.

It's World Rabies Day!🦠

Here are some facts about Rabies:
1) Approximately 59,000 peolpe world-wide die from Rabies each year.
2) Rabies Virus is 100% fatal when clinical signs appear.
3) A definitive diagnosis of Rabies Virus can only be acquired after the patient has passed away, so we rely on symptoms alone prior to death.
4) Rabies Virus is 100% preventable with appropriate vaccination protocols for each species.
5) There were a total of confirmed 28 cases of Rabies in Harford County alone last year. This year, we are already at 22 cases (the highest in the state) with 16 being raccons.

The Harford County Health Department has launched an program to work on vaccinating wildlife through oral vaccination bait stations. They plan to set up 15,000 bait stations all over the county to help decrease and eventually prevent the spread of this terrible virus.

If you or someone you know is bitten by any animal, wildlife or domesticated, it's incredibly important to contact your doctor and/or your local ER immediately. If your pets come into contact with wildlife, contact your vet for recommendations.

Today is National Cat and Dog Gut Health Awareness Day!

Did you know that your pet can take a daily probiotic to help support gut health? There are many options available out there and some are better than others. Some pets need a bacteria-based probiotic while others need one that is yeast-based. Some pets need one that includes extra fiber and some need a one that includes a pre and post probiotic.
