The old "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule falls apart pretty quickly when you start keeping nano fish. 🐟
Think about it: by that rule, ten 1-inch pygmy cories would need 10 gallons. But a single 10-inch oscar would also need 10 gallons. Anyone who's kept fish knows that's not even close to reality.
Fish produce waste at different rates, have different activity levels, and need different amounts of swimming space. A school of tiny nano fish often has a much smaller bioload than a few larger fish with the same total length.
Stocking should be based on:
✔️ Adult size
✔️ Bioload
✔️ Swimming behavior
✔️ Tank footprint
✔️ Filtration
✔️ Water change schedule
That's why a well-filtered planted tank can comfortably house a large group of nano fish while staying healthy and stable.
The "1 inch per gallon" rule is a simple starting point, but it's definitely not the whole story.
