The old "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule falls apart pretty quickly when you start keeping nano fish. 🐟
Think about it: by that rule, ten 1-inch pygmy cories would need 10 gallons. But a single 10-inch oscar would also need 10 gallons. Anyone who's kept fish knows that's not even close to reality.
Fish produce waste at different rates, have different activity levels, and need different amounts of swimming space. A school of tiny nano fish often has a much smaller bioload than a few larger fish with the same total length.
Stocking should be based on:
✔️ Adult size
✔️ Bioload
✔️ Swimming behavior
✔️ Tank footprint
✔️ Filtration
✔️ Water change schedule
That's why a well-filtered planted tank can comfortably house a large group of nano fish while staying healthy and stable.
The "1 inch per gallon" rule is a simple starting point, but it's definitely not the whole story.

Pygmy cories might be some of the cutest fish in the aquarium hobby. 🥹🐟
They're tiny, peaceful, and always seem to be busy exploring every corner of the tank. Watching a little group of them shoal together is one of those simple things that never gets old.
For such a small fish, they have huge personalities. Whether they're darting around the midwater or searching the substrate for snacks, they always manage to steal the spotlight.
Who else is obsessed with pygmy cories? ❤️

One of the things that impressed me most during our visit to Ohio Fish Rescue last year was their massive wetland filtration system. Instead of relying solely on traditional filtration, they use a natural wetland ecosystem to help clean and maintain water quality for thousands of rescued fish.
It's a great example of working with nature rather than against it, and seeing it in person gave me a whole new appreciation for the thought and effort that goes into caring for so many aquatic animals. Definitely one of the highlights of our visit!

Last year we visited Ohio Fish Rescue and heard an awesome story about alligator gar. Despite their intimidating teeth and powerful bite, they generally don't bite swimmers under normal conditions.
A few cool facts we learned:
🐟 Alligator gar are one of the largest freshwater fish in North America and can grow over 8 feet long.
🦷 They have two rows of sharp teeth in their upper jaw, which is how they got their name.
🦴 They're considered living fossils, with ancestors dating back more than 100 million years.
🌬️ They can gulp air at the surface, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen waters.
⚖️ Despite their fearsome appearance, they're important predators that help keep aquatic ecosystems balanced.
Definitely one of the most misunderstood fish we've ever encountered!

The legend himself Charley Grimes came in the other day for the first time. He said "Most authentic and unique fish store in the state. Truly an amazing setup and operation you have here"

Which is absolutely an amazing feeling. That's like Michael Jordan telling a basketball player that hes pretty good at basketball.

The best carpeting plant… If you want that lush, green carpet look in your aquarium, Crypt Parva is one of the best plants to try. 🌱

It stays small, spreads slowly, and gives your tank that clean, natural foreground without being super demanding. Unlike some carpeting plants, Crypt Parva doesn’t need crazy high light or CO₂ to look good — just patience and a little time to settle in.

Perfect for shrimp tanks, nano tanks, and anyone who wants a low-maintenance carpet that actually looks natural. 🐟✨

New store hours ❤️ Wednesday- Sunday 12-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm 5575 Elmwood ave suite a (back building) You have to see the newest fish store in Indianapolis Indiana!

Tiger lotus bulbs are seriously one of the coolest aquarium plants. They start as a plain little bulb, then turn into a bold, colorful centerpiece with big red or green leaves that can make your tank look like an underwater jungle. Don’t bury the bulb all the way—just set it on the substrate and let it do its thing. Watching it wake up and grow is half the fun.

Tiger lotus bulbs (often Nymphaea lotus) are one of those planted tank “sleepers” that completely change a setup once they take off. At first, they just look like a strange, brown, potato-like bulb sitting in the substrate… and then suddenly you’ve got massive lily pads taking over the surface.
They’re fast growers under good conditions and can send up both submerged leaves (which are usually mottled and elegant) and floating leaves that spread across the top of the tank. That dual growth habit is what makes them so useful — they can provide shade, reduce algae by blocking light, and give shy fish like bettas and dwarf cichlids a ton of cover near the surface.
They do best in nutrient-rich substrate and appreciate a bit of patience while they establish. Once they settle in, they’re hard to stop.
Just be ready for maintenance pruning if you don’t want a full jungle canopy.
