Meet Pico. 💛

Pico is a cockatiel who has been in our care for a few months now. We’ve had a few interested homes for him, but unfortunately every potential adoption has fallen through at the last minute.

We estimate Pico to be over 10 years old. Before coming to us, he was living in a tiny parakeet-sized table cage/carrier. Sadly, he appears to have had very little positive human interaction throughout his life. Even now, simply walking past his cage can cause him to panic, and getting photos of him is extremely difficult because of how fearful he is.

Over the past few months, Pico has become accustomed to our daily routine of feeding and cage cleaning, but he still becomes very anxious whenever people are nearby. Because of this, we believe he would do best in a home with other cockatiels and with someone who has absolutely no expectations of turning him into a cuddly, hands-on pet. Pico needs a person who is happy to simply coexist with him and allow him to be himself.

Unfortunately, due to a language barrier with the people who surrendered him, we know very little about Pico’s history or what may have caused him to become so fearful. What we do know is that he deserves patience, understanding, and a safe place to call home.

Sometimes the birds that need the least from us have the most to teach us. Pico may never be a bird that seeks out human attention, but he still deserves a family willing to love him exactly as he is.

If you think you may be the right fit for Pico, please message our page. We are located in Beech Creek, PA.

We got our Flat Perch order today for Miss Polly Peg Legs! ❤️

We ordered a Medium Corner Perch with their washable Pillow Top cover, a padded sewn case that fits perfectly over the perch and ties securely along the sides. Polly has already checked it out and settled right in for a nap.

Since Polly has no feet, we’re always looking for safe and comfortable additions for her setup. She currently lives in a Wabbitat cage outfitted with platforms and planks throughout, along with a small critter bed that she likes to sleep on. Our goal is to give her plenty of options while helping prevent pressure sores and keeping her as comfortable as possible.

It’s also been a constant battle trying to make sure she poops over the edges and down into the grate to prevent her from walking through her droppings and getting her little pegs dirty. Between comfort, cleanliness, and accessibility, designing a cage for a bird with no feet has definitely been a learning experience!

I figured this would be a great opportunity to show everyone her setup, since we’ve been asked about it quite a bit. We finally feel like we’ve got it where we want it, with several different options throughout the cage for Polly to use. One of her planks is even wrapped in a slightly padded wipe-clean tablecloth that’s stapled to the back of the plank. It makes cleanup super easy when she misses the edge and poops on the platform instead, everything wipes right down.

If you have a disabled bird, I highly recommend checking out Flat Perch. Even if your bird isn’t disabled, they offer some great alternatives to traditional perches, including platforms, ramps, corner perches, and lots of other fun cage accessories.

Show us your disabled bird setups in the comments! We’d love to see the creative ways you’ve adapted your cages to keep your special needs birds safe, comfortable, and happy. ❤️

Before and after of our second corrective beak trim on Miss Maggie girl! ❤️

Maggie came to us with a severely deformed beak caused by years of malnourishment, an improper diet, and m**h exposure. Unfortunately, there is only so much that can be corrected after that kind of long-term damage, but we’re doing everything we can to improve both the appearance and function of her beak.

Today was her second corrective trim, and I think we made some great progress! We were able to reshape it quite a bit and bring down a lot of the overgrowth. While Maggie’s beak will likely never be completely normal, each trim helps make it easier for her to eat, play, and enjoy life more comfortably.

She’s come a long way already, and we’re incredibly proud of this tough little girl. 💚

Unfortunately, Moose is back up for adoption.

This is now the second time a potential meet-and-greet has been canceled before the scheduled appointment. We know Moose’s perfect person is out there, we just need them to come meet him!

Moose is a fantastic bird and is going to make someone an incredible companion. He is a bit skittish and flighty at first, which is exactly why we are only placing him on a 4-week foster-to-adopt trial. Truthfully, Moose doesn’t “show well” during meet-and-greets. Instead of sitting politely and showing off, he tends to fly around like a little maniac. 🤣

What people don’t get to see right away is the bird behind that nervous energy. With patience, consistency, and a little time, Moose becomes an absolute sweetheart. He lets me hold him, carry him around like a banana, and absolutely smother him with kisses. He steps up (usually!) and has quite the collection of sounds and noises.

As an added bonus, Moose doubles as a highly effective home security system. Nobody is sneaking into your house without Moose letting the entire neighborhood know about it. 😂

If you’re willing to look past the first impression and give this goofy guy the time he deserves, we think you’ll find an amazing companion waiting underneath all those flapping wings.

Interested in fostering-to-adopt Moose? Send us a message!

🌞 We’re Looking for Summer Events! 🦜

If you’re in the Clinton or Centre County area and know of any vendor events, festivals, community days, fairs, or other summer gatherings where we could set up a table with merchandise and some of our ambassador birds, please let us know!

We would love the opportunity to get out into the community this summer, meet new people, share our mission, and introduce some amazing parrots to all of you. There’s nothing we enjoy more than educating the public and letting people experience these incredible birds up close.

Additionally, if you have a venue, business, or property and would be interested in hosting an event or fundraiser for us, please send us a message. We’re always looking for new ways to connect with the community and raise awareness for rescue parrots.

Drop your event suggestions in the comments or send us a message, we can’t wait to see where this summer takes us! ❤️🦜

Please tag event organizers, local businesses, farmers markets, and community groups that may be interested in having us attend. Sharing this post helps us reach more people and gives more folks the chance to meet some amazing rescue birds!

✨ Everyone welcome Merlin to Soaring Spirits Sanctuary! ✨

Merlin is a young 17-year-old African Grey who was recently surrendered after his owner fell on hard times and had to make the heartbreaking decision to give him up.

It is abundantly clear how deeply loved and well cared for this bird has been. Surrenders like this are never easy, and our hearts go out to his mama during this difficult transition.

Merlin does have some plucking, over-preening, and feather barbering issues, but nothing we can’t handle. Tomorrow morning we’ll be drawing blood for disease testing, and for now we’re letting him settle in, decompress, and adjust to his new surroundings.

According to his mama, Merlin is a boujee, stubborn, sassy little character, and we can’t wait to see that personality start to shine through as he becomes more comfortable.

Surprisingly, Merlin has never been to a veterinarian in his 17 years, so I’m going to do my best to fit him into our June 11th appointment alongside Cinnamon and Earl for a full wellness exam and comprehensive blood panel.

As always, veterinary care and disease testing are some of our biggest expenses. If you’d like to help support Merlin’s disease testing, or any of the birds currently in our care, please consider donating through Zeffy. We receive 100% of your donation, with no fees taken out by the platform.

Every dollar helps us provide medical care, diagnostics, food, enrichment, and a safe place for birds like Merlin to land when they need us most. ❤️🦜

Welcome to the flock, Merlin. We’re honored to be part of your journey. 💚
