It seems like we are still struggling to stand out and meet people in our LOCAL community, so let me try this again!

If you are local to us, PLEASE REPOST this and help us reach our community! We want people in our own backyard to know that we’re here.

Hi! I’m Jenna, the owner of Soaring Spirits Sanctuary, a parrot rescue located in Beech Creek, PA … specifically Monument, because apparently nobody considers Monument an actual town 😂 and we have officially been here for 2½ years!

We’re located right on the Centre County/Clinton County line, and you might even find me wandering around the Mill Hall Walmart sorting through vegetables for bird chop. 😂🥦

We frequent the Lock Haven/Mill Hall area and regularly venture out toward State College for various rescue duties.

Ever since we established Soaring Spirits, I have wanted to set up at a local vendor event, community event, or even host an event of our own in the Lock Haven or State College area. We would absolutely LOVE the opportunity to meet more people in our community, educate, and introduce people to what we do!

🦜 Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and responsibly rehome parrots in need.

But our mission goes far beyond simply taking in birds.

We put a huge emphasis on education and prevention teaching both new AND experienced parrot owners about proper parrot husbandry and helping people understand what they are truly signing up for when they bring a parrot into their lives.

We want to spread awareness about the crisis happening within the exotic pet trade and educate people about:

🦜 Parrots’ incredibly long lifespans
🧠 Their intelligence and emotional complexity
❤️ Their social needs
🏡 Their environmental and enrichment needs
🥗 Proper nutrition and husbandry
💚 The commitment involved in caring for these animals for decades

We have also had the privilege of helping multiple counties and surrounding-state organizations, including SPCAs, with crisis cases.

The other roughly 50% of our intakes are typically owner surrenders, and a large portion of those involve parrots who have either already outlived their owners or are expected to outlive them, leaving them displaced and with nowhere to go next.

That is a HUGE part of why we believe education and planning for the future are so important.

We aren’t just a rescue sitting somewhere in the middle of Pennsylvania. We are part of this community, too. And we want to connect with the people who live around us!

Today is CHOP DAY! 🥦

It’s time to stock the fridge with another fresh batch of chop for the birds!

Here’s what went into this batch:

🫛 Sugar snap peas
🍠 Sweet potatoes
🥒 Zucchini
💛 Yellow squash
🌱 Radishes
🥬 Turnips
🌶️ Jalepenos
❤️ Pomegranate seeds
🫘 Pinto beans

And because they’re spoiled, they also have fresh cantaloupe packaged separately on the side! 🍈😂

Fresh, colorful, nutritious, and made with lots of love.

Happy Monday, everyone! And happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸

Let’s start the week with a little update on our newest guy, Buddy the Blue Throated Macaw.

Unfortunately, it appears Buddy has either a broken or injured foot/leg. We can’t quite pinpoint exactly what’s going on yet, so we’ll be calling our vet as soon as they open Tuesday morning to get him checked out.

He limps when he walks, his foot sits somewhat sideways, and he doesn’t seem to be able to grip with it. We’re hoping it’s something that can be treated and that we can get him more comfortable soon.

Buddy is also absolutely terrified of people. He is going to be quite the handful, but we’re not rushing him. Right now, he needs patience, space, and time to decompress and learn that he’s safe.

Another frustrating issue is that Buddy desperately wants to fly, but all of his primary AND secondary flight feathers have been clipped terribly. Because he can’t properly fly, he’s attempting to take off and just crash lands onto the floor, which is putting even more stress on an already injured leg and making room for more injury.

This is exactly why I strongly believe we need to be much more thoughtful about wing clipping (But you all know where I stand on wing clipping…). If a bird is going to be clipped, it needs to be done correctly and with an understanding of the bird’s anatomy and how those feathers function. Taking secondary feathers as well as primaries can severely compromise a bird’s ability to control and safely land.

I’m honestly pretty frustrated with the condition Buddy came to us in. He deserves better, and we’re going to do everything we can to give him exactly that.

Now, onto this week’s busy schedule! …

🦜 Today: Joe, our macaw from the Bristol 4 case, has a meet & greet! YAY, JOE! 🎉

🥬 We’re also going chop shopping today and getting dirty in the kitchen making our next big batch of fresh chop. Because apparently I enjoy spending my holidays covered in vegetables.

🧹 I’d also like to finish getting the aviary reorganized after the flooding we experienced a few days ago. We’re still putting things back together around here!

🧽 Tuesday: Deep-scrubbing day! All of the cages are getting a serious cleaning. And even better; Daryl, our Indian Ringneck, is getting ADOPTED!

🐦 Wednesday: We have a previous client bringing their African Grey in for a nail trim.

🏡 Thursday: It’s Ozzy’s adoption day! Another happy ending!

🦜 Friday: One of our repeat boarders is coming back to stay with us while his parents go on vacation. We love our returning guests!

And Friday, I’ll also be heading out to visit my dad and brother. I’m really looking forward to some family time!

So yes… it’s going to be a BUSY week here at Soaring Spirits!

WE HAVE LOTS OF ADOPTABLE BIRDS RIGHT NOW! 🦜

Each bird has their own unique personality, needs, quirks, and history, and our goal is always to find the best possible match for both the bird and their future family.

Here’s a peek at some of the birds currently looking for their forever homes:

🩶 African Grey — Terrified of men and will only be placed with a woman.

💛 Caique — Young and full of personality! An adopter will need to understand and be comfortable managing hormonal aggression.

🩵 Bourkes — 4 birds — These four are bonded and must be adopted together.

🩷 Bourke — 1 bird — Disabled with a severe splay leg and will need an adopter who understands and is prepared for their special needs.

💙 Blue-Crowned Conure — This guy has been with us for a full year and is finally ready to find his forever home! He isn’t the cuddly type, but he is hand-tame and has been working hard on learning to fly.

❤️ Greenwing Macaw — 43 years old and prefers women. This beautiful senior boy is looking for someone who understands the commitment that comes with giving an older macaw a forever home.

This handsome boy is Buddy, a Blue-throated Macaw!

We actually just welcomed another “Buddy” this week, so we’re probably going to be renaming this guy. 😂 If you have any name recommendations, drop them in the comments because I’d love to hear what you come up with!

Blue-throated Macaws are very few and far between, so having the opportunity to welcome one of these incredible birds to Soaring Spirits is pretty special. ❤️

For now, Buddy will be staying here as an ambassador bird, so please don’t ask about adoption. Right now, his only job is to settle in, decompress, build confidence, and learn that he is safe.

The last few months have involved a lot of change for this guy. He has been in three different homes in only four months, and that kind of instability can be incredibly difficult for a parrot especially one that is already unsure of people and his surroundings.

Right now, Buddy is absolutely terrified of me, and that’s okay. We’re going to move at HIS pace.

His wings have also been clipped very poorly, so rebuilding his confidence and helping him navigate safely while those feathers grow back will be another part of his journey.

There’s no deadline and no expectation for who he needs to become.

We’ll work slowly on trust, socialization, confidence, and simply allowing him to get comfortable with his new surroundings. Some birds need days. Some need weeks, months, or longer. Buddy gets whatever time Buddy needs.

He is believed to be around 12 years old, although we don’t have enough history to know for certain. There are still plenty of things we’re learning about him, and I’m sure he’ll tell us more about himself as he begins to settle in.

GUYS, WE NEED TO HELP OUR RESCUE FAMILY!

Our friends at Breezy Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary suffered extreme damage from this flooding, and I really want to take a moment to ask our Soaring Spirits family to rally around them.

Amanda, the owner of Breezy Parrot Rescue, is like a sister to me. Her team is equally my team. We may operate separately, but we are all in this together. When one of us gets knocked down, we help each other back up. That’s what rescue family is supposed to do.

One of the team members at Breezy suffered unimaginable damage to their home… far, far worse than what we experienced here at Soaring Spirits. I saw the pictures in our group chat, and honestly, I was completely blown away. I cannot imagine how devastating it must be to look at your home and see that so much of what you’ve worked so hard for has been damaged or destroyed.

Thankfully, their birds and their kiddos are safe. And at the end of the day, that is what matters most. But they work incredibly hard for what they have, and they have lost so much.

I know some of you have reached out asking if you can donate to Soaring Spirits to help us replace the things we lost yesterday. And while we appreciate that more than you know, I would much rather you redirect that support to Breezy’s teammate right now. We are okay. We have a savings fund specifically for unexpected emergencies like this, and we will be able to replace what we need.

They need the extra help right now.

WE HAVE POWER! 🙌🏻

We got power back yesterday around 5pm, only to lose it AGAIN around 8pm, and finally got it back this morning around 6:30am. I’m really, really hoping we are officially in the clear now and that we are DONE with all of this!

So, today’s mission is getting everything back to normal.

I’m heading to Ollie’s this morning to pick up some new rugs for the aviary. We originally had those connecting floor mats, and they were AMAZING for our knees when we were scrubbing cages. They were comfortable to stand on, sit on, and work on.

The problem… Once you take those things apart, it is basically IMPOSSIBLE to figure out how you had them all connected. If you have kids and have ever dealt with those giant connecting floor play mats, you already know EXACTLY what I’m talking about. So after staring at the pieces for way too long, I gave up. 🤣

We’re going with rugs instead! And there’s a benefit to that too. If we ever have another flood, rugs will be much easier to toss over the fence and hang outside to dry.

There’s still a tiny bit of water on the floors… barely anything, but enough that I don’t want to put the new rugs down yet. I spent about 3 hours yesterday between the sump pump and shop vac sucking up water. Unfortunately, once we lost power, I went through my towels fast and couldn’t get them into the dryer to keep washing and reusing them to finish drying the floors.

So now that we have power again, today’s big project is getting all of those towels washed and dried, finishing up the floors, and then getting the new rugs down in the aviary.

I’m also going to be buying new air purifiers today. Thankfully, those were the only and most expensive things we lost in the flooding. They’re expensive to replace, but it’s okay! Things can be replaced, and I’m just incredibly grateful that we didn’t have more significant damage. ❤️

My back is absolutely KILLING me after all of this, but honestly… we are SO lucky. We didn’t have much damage at all, and it could have been so much worse. I’ll take a sore back, some wet floors, and replacing a few things over what could have happened any day.

This was definitely just a little block in the road and another challenge for us to tackle. And through all of it, the most important thing is that every single bird is happy, healthy, and safe. If they’re okay, I’m okay.

We’ve already rescheduled the appointments that needed to be moved, and I’m hoping that by the end of today everything will be cleaned, organized, dried out, and back where it belongs.

And then hopefully… tomorrow is just a normal day again. 😂

Thank you all for being so understanding while we dealt with this mess. We appreciate every single person who checked in on us, sent good thoughts, and gave us a little grace while we got everything under control.

This is also a really good reminder of why your donations matter so much. Every dollar you contribute helps provide disease testing, food, enrichment, medical care, cage supplies, and all of the everyday necessities our birds need… but it also allows us to put money aside into a savings fund for unexpected situations like this. Emergencies happen, things break, flooding happens, equipment needs to be replaced, and sometimes the rescue has unexpected expenses that simply can’t wait. Having that cushion means we can handle those situations without taking away from the birds’ everyday care or scrambling to figure out how we’re going to afford an emergency. So truly, thank you.
