This is One-Eyed Susan, our feral barn cat here at the rescue. She originated as a TNR kitten but due to her needing an eye enucleation surgery as well as spay, we couldn’t release her to her colony next day. Then after a couple weeks of recovery inside, we decided she could not return to her unhealthy colony or else she would most likely lose her other eye from infection just like the first. Unfortunately she never tamed and was simply released on the farm, surrounded by our healthy and vetted pet cats (Tenchi, Kuzco, and Kirishima). She still doesn’t allow contact, but stays on the farm, earning her keep with mousing, and loves her kitty friends. We believe she has a good feral life and should injury or sickness ever occur, we’ve got her covered.

This is how you care for feral cats and/or colonies. Do NOT just feed them and think you’re helping because ultimately you’re not. Get them sterilized and vetted. Don’t have the money to care for all the cats? DON’T FEED. Contact a TNR for help. They can help trap if you can’t purchase a trap from your local hardware/farm store. They can also help with costs. Do your research and actually help FIX the problem, not contribute.

A "spay-abort" is a standard veterinary procedure where a pregnant female cat is spayed, terminating the pregnancy. It is considered a safe, humane, and practical method to protect the mother's health and prevent overpopulation, as developing fetuses do not experience suffering.

HOW IT WORKS

×××The Procedure: The veterinarian removes the uterus and ovaries entirely. This removes the developing embryos and permanently prevents future pregnancies.
×××Timing: It can generally be performed at any stage of gestation, from early pregnancy up to right before labor.
×××Veterinary Context: Because blood vessels in the reproductive tract are enlarged during pregnancy, the surgery may take slightly longer and require extra care compared to a standard spay.

BENEFITS OF A SPAY/ABORT

Statistically speaking, “free kittens” often continue the heartbreaking cycle of cat overpopulation. Not every kitten ends up adding to the problem, but a high majority do. 😭

If you’re considering taking in free kittens, ask about the mama cat too. Is she being spayed? Is there a plan to prevent more litters? ✂️ People who take kittens without addressing the mother’s situation may unintentionally enable the cycle to continue. Ending suffering starts with prevention. ✅

And if you’re someone who suddenly finds yourself caring for kittens, your first priority should be getting mom fixed. 🐈‍⬛ I know money can be tight and resources can feel impossible to find, but even small sacrifices now can prevent countless future kittens from being born into hardship, danger, or uncertainty. Don’t wait. Make a plan. Skip that morning coffee ☕️ and start saving now.

Reach out to shelters, rescues, or TNR programs for guidance on safely rehoming kittens and getting mom spayed. Many organizations are overwhelmed, especially during kitten season, so they may not be able to solve everything for you, but advice, support, and information can go a long way if you are willing to be proactive. 😻🐾

Killer’s eyes are healing well but he’s still uncertain about humans; he’ll need some TLC for a bit longer before adoption. Anyone interested in fostering this wild child to make him realize humans can be good?
