You DO NOT want to mess around with rabies! In Ohio, the most common carrier of rabies is bats. Bats get into our homes and, of course, our pets would love to 'play" with a bat...especially an ill one that is flopping around on the floor. Sorry to be so detailed, but this is why all dogs and even indoor cats should receive rabies immunizations.
