This historic 1862 photo depicts Union troops erecting a pontoon pier on the Beaufort River. The Union was busy all over the area after capturing the town early in the war and built several of these along with seizing local homes for quarters and converting some into Union hospitals.

This is why animals have a reaction to changes in barometric pressure. Wildlife will take refuge when a storm approaches. Dogs and cats can get anxiety which often leads to troubled behaviors. And us people become achy. It's a good idea to take into account when you are family or dogs are slightly off kilter to check the barometric pressure it could be a contributing factor.

I'd like to make a note about the dangers of the very high dew point. Dew point is the point at which water evaporates. The higher the dew point the slower the evaporation. The reason for the delay is that high dew point means excessive moisture that's ambient in the air and it is so saturated that it cannot accumulate anymore at a significant rate. This is where it becomes dangerous for you and your dog. You can sweat as much as you want but there's no assistance from it. The only thing is happening is you're losing water. I have a good example here of the dangers. Water spilled out of the back of my truck at about 12:00. I returned to my truck right now at about 2:30 and the water has not fully evaporated. That stuff should have been gone in less than a minute but because the water in the air is so thick it is not able to evaporate so it stands. Here is a picture example.

I recently purchased this for way way and I have to tell you I'm astonished, it is a game changer! I got buy one get one free and shared with my peep in Florida. It's definitely worth looking into if you have a dog that runs hot or if you are outside a lot and you need something to keep cool.

Stryker at the very beginning of his career. This would have been about 6 months after we pulled him from the shelter. We lost him a couple years ago. He was a hard-working man. One of my clients that took this picture with me sent this today and my heart grew five sizes. If you recognize yourself in this picture please add your story of your dog and if they are still here. I suspect most of them if not all have passed. I would love to honor them in this moment. Off the top of my head I recognize velcro and Gus. That big chunky boy second from the left is a dog that was pulled from Beaufort County Animal Control many years ago and trained as a service dog and donated to a member of the community. He was most likely a Rottweiler labrador pitbull mix. Big Hefty boy with big Hefty britches. He lived a firefighter's life.

When you dedicate weeks, months, and years of training you eventually come to a desirable destination where you have consistent and reliable behavior in and out of the home. When you attain that there are certain perks that come with it. One such perk is this evening's walk. Off leash with reliable recall, a bicycle brake light, and cowbells. Combine those things together and we have an enjoyable walk on the decommissioned golf course looking up at the stars, talking to the trees, and enjoying nature in its Glory at night.
