🍀🐾Unlucky? More Like Unadopted—Let’s Talk Black Pets In Shelters🐾🍀

Black cats and dogs are some of the most common animals found in shelters—and heartbreakingly, some of the most overlooked. In 2024 alone, roughly 4.1 million animals were adopted from U.S. shelters, with about 2 million dogs and 2 million cats finding their forever homes. That’s something truly worth celebrating, especially since those numbers continue to grow each year. But behind that hopeful progress is a quieter, tougher truth: not all animals benefit equally from adoption trends. Black pets, in particular, continue to face longer shelter stays and lower adoption rates due to lingering myths, stereotypes, and superstitions that have nothing to do with who they really are.

Black cats are significantly less likely to be adopted than their more “colorful” counterparts. Studies suggest that only 20–25% of black cats in shelters are adopted, compared to 40–45% of cats with other coat colors. Some research paints an even bleaker picture, placing black cat adoption rates as low as 10%, with euthanasia rates exceeding 70% in certain areas. Black dogs face similar challenges under what shelters often call Black Dog Syndrome. Data shows that black dogs are adopted at rates 20–30% lower than average and often wait weeks longer for homes. In some shelters, they make up 20–25% of the dog population but account for a far smaller portion of adoptions, putting them at greater risk of being overlooked. While we do not euthanize for time or space, these statistics are still deeply troubling—and personal—for those of us who love and care for these animals every day.

Much of this bias stems from old myths. Black cats are often unfairly linked to bad luck, curses, witches, or death—yet historically, they’ve also been powerful symbols of good fortune. In Ireland, England, France, and Japan, black cats are believed to bring prosperity and luck. In France, they were sometimes called “money cats,” thought to attract wealth if treated kindly. In Japan, England’s Midlands, and ancient Egypt, black cats were associated with love, marriage, protection, fertility, and justice. Sailors once kept cats aboard ships for luck and safety, and in Egypt, cats—especially black ones—were revered as divine protectors. In truth, black cats carry far more positive symbolism than negative, yet they remain disproportionately overlooked in shelters.

Black dogs face equally unfair myths. Folklore often paints them as omens of death or embodiments of evil, drawing from stories like the Hound of the Baskervilles or Cerberus of Greek mythology. Some people assume black dogs are more aggressive or sinister simply because of their appearance. Yet across cultures, black dogs are honored as guardians, guides, and protectors. In ancient Egypt, they were believed to guard the dead and es**rt souls safely to the afterlife. In Hinduism, a black dog is the sacred companion of Lord Bhairava, symbolizing protection and the destruction of fear. European folklore often depicts black dogs as guides who protect travelers at night, while Native American and Mesoamerican cultures view them as sacred spiritual companions who help ferry souls in the afterlife—especially for those who showed them kindness in life. Loyalty, courage, wisdom, and protection are far more common themes than fear.
Right now, we are home to 19 black pets—11 cats and 8 dogs

Two of our shining stars include:

Remi, a 2-year-old large mixed-breed bursting with energy and joy. Remi lives life at full speed—obsessed with toys, treats, and human affection. He’s curious, goofy, and endlessly enthusiastic, and while he can be selective with other dogs, he adores people without hesitation.

Slinky, a 1-year-old domestic medium hair cat who may seem shy at first but is truly a cuddle bug at heart. With patience and love, Slinky would happily spend his days curled up in someone’s lap—something we wish we could give him more of in a busy shelter environment.

With millions of animals finding loving homes each year, these disparities serve as a gentle but painful reminder that bias and myth still affect real lives. Black animals aren’t harder to love, less friendly, or less deserving—they’re just easier to overlook. And every day they wait, the numbers quietly stack against them. Choosing a black cat or dog doesn’t just give one animal a second chance—it helps dismantle a stigma that has lingered far too long. Because the truth is, the only unlucky thing about black pets… is that they’re still waiting.

January was one for the record books, our biggest January Adoption Month EVER! 🎉🐾

We’re thrilled to share that we celebrated 132 adoptions to kick off the new year — 98 cats and 34 dogs finding loving homes. What a fantastic way to start the year! Beginning with such a strong month fills us with so much hope and excitement as we work toward beating our adoption records once again in 2026. None of this would be possible without our amazing adopters, supporters, and community who continue to show up for our animals in the biggest ways. 🐾✨

If you adopted with us this month, we’d absolutely love to see updated photos — feel free to share them in the comments! We have shared some of January’s adoptions that we were able to capture in shelter (we didn’t get everyone, but we have adoptions out of 5 locations!!!). If you’re thinking about adding a furry family member, be sure to check out our adoption page or stop by and visit us. And don’t worry — we’ll be back next month with another adoption update! 💕

🌴✨ Thank you for being a friend… and maybe adopting one too! ✨🌴
Introducing our Shelter Golden Girls—proof that age only brings more love, more wisdom, and way better snuggles. These gals may be older, but they’re still spunky, full of heart, and always ready with the best advice for any occasion (usually involving lap cuddles and kisses). If you’re looking for loyalty, laughter, and unconditional friendship, pull up a chair—these ladies are ready to steal the show.

💛 Amara is our Blanche-level charmer with an 8-year-old black Lab mix glow-up. When you’re with Amara, no one else exists—you are the center of her universe. This gentle soul is a full-time lap dog, cuddle bug, and professional lover of all humans. Men, women, kids, seniors—Amara loves everyone with her whole heart. Dogs are okay in moderation, but people? People are her true passion. Sweet, calm, and endlessly affectionate, Amara would be a perfect companion for just about anyone.

😂 Missy brings the Dorothy sass mixed with pure joy. This 8-year-old American Staffordshire mix is all smiles, wiggles, and good times. When life gets tough, Missy is the girl who will make you laugh through it—no questions asked. She’s a silly, upbeat gal who loves people, enjoys games (especially freeze and tug-of-war), and lives for butt scratches and compliments. While she’s a little dog-selective, she’s a total people-lover and a perfect match for families ready to laugh away even the rainiest days.

🐾 Vala is our sweet Rose—an 8-year-old buff tabby DSH with a gentle soul and a heart of gold. This soft, biscuit-making queen gets along well with other cats and adores cuddles from anyone willing to offer a warm lap. Occasionally, she surprises us with a few zoomies, but most days she prefers cozy snuggles and quietly judging reruns of her favorite Golden Girls episodes. She brightens every room just by being in it.

🐱 Pigeon is the Sophia of the group—an 8-year-old white and buff DSH with a tough past and a tougher spirit. This determined, strong-willed little lady has been through a lot, but she refuses to let it dim her shine. Beneath her spunky attitude is a kind, loving heart that enjoys snuggles, warmth, other kitties, and the occasional playful moment. She also loves being reminded just how stinkin’ cute she is (and she is).

✨ Star rounds out the cast as our quiet powerhouse—an 8-year-old black DMH kitty with a strong heart and endless love to give. Despite her dark coloring, Star truly sparkles. Through tough days, she’s never shown sadness—only resilience, affection, and loyalty. She’s a lover through thick and thin, just waiting for someone to receive all that devotion.

🌟 So what are you waiting for?
Come meet our Golden Girls—because the best friendships, the warmest snuggles, and the truest love only get better with age.

Sometimes the best thing we can do to help an animal in need is to recognize when we should not help them.... and then get them to someone who can!
That's the case with Cricket, she a 9-year-old Maltese who had been lacking appropriate grooming for years. Her entire coat was one very large mat, and underneath the mat, we knew we would find all the badness. She had infected skin from her nose to her tail- and even her tail was bad! The mats had cut off circulation, and the last 3 vertebrae were brittle and in need of removal. She had stinky teeth and gross eyes, but the thing that kept us going was her love for humans. She wanted attention and gentle pets, and she couldn't understand why humans shied away from her and avoided touching her.... So, we helped her overcome it.
Earlier this month we sedated her and spent almost 2 hours carefully cutting away the mats from her skin so as to not do more damage, we gently cleaned and medicated her ears and skin and were left with a skinny, possibly blind and still stinky dog.
In swoops Holly with B and B Pet Grooming who squeezed her in for a medicated bath the very next day.
We still had to schedule her for an eye exam, dental and tail amputation, but it would be 2 weeks of healing her skin before we could address those problems.
The dental was straightforward but required 13 teeth to be removed, the tail amputation went as expected. And her eyes weren't as bad as we first thought, we thought she might be blind and in pain from glaucoma, but it turns out she has cataracts, and while the one is definitely impacting her vision, there is a surgery to correct is and restore her vision!
Well, that's kind of a good thing, because a surgery that costs $5000 or more is still hard for an animal shelter like ours to consider providing when it's not lifesaving her life and she is not currently in pain and animals live blind every single day. That same $5000 can provide twelve parvo positive puppies the lifesaving new monoclonal drug, or four dogs that need limb amputations, it can also save ten cats that need an eye enucleated or provide full bloodwork for 50 sick shelter animals.
At a time when nationally, donations are lower than they ever have been before? Well, its just not fair to the next animal in need of truly lifesaving medical care.
So, we reached out to our rescue partners and Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary, Inc. stepped up and said they can help her!
Today our Volunteer Brooke drove all the way to Hermitage, Missouri to help this precious little girl get one step closer to the life of health, happiness, and comfort she deserves!
So, this ends the chapter of our story with Cricket, but we are happy to report that she will continue on her path to happily ever after with her new rescue family.
Crickets final "bill" with us will never be paid, it isn't paid by the new rescue or covered by adoption fees, it is funded by our amazing community of supporters because we can't make these decisions about the money. We make these decisions because it's the right decision for Cricket. Happy tails Cricket, we hope you have the very best days ahead of you!

We have been contacted by Jordan's Way in the past, we have always declined out of respect for our donors as we do not feel comfortable giving away a quarter of the donations our donors intend for our animals. But raising 10k or more in a few hours is hard to look away from. As a shelter it is incredibly hard to raise those kinds of funds that quickly. All we can say is we are grateful for our donors and supporters, we will continue to be as transparent and responsible as we can be about how and where your donations are used. We also would like to send our support to the shelter volunteers, employees and board members, in an already thankless world, No one deserves to be treated or spoken to in that manner. There's no need for it. We are standing here as another small shelter trying to do big things with never enough people, never enough money and always too many animals in need. But as one of your rescue partners, please know we see you, and we stand with you in the efforts of saving animals. Support your local shelters and rescues. We can't keep operating without your support & donations. Every animal that gets the help that they need is because a donor said that animal and that organization and that mission is worthy of my donation dollar. Ever donation dollar helps!

❄️ Cold Weather Safety for Pets This Weekend ❄️
Extreme cold, snow, and dangerous wind chills are moving into our area, and our four‑legged family members need extra protection.

As temperatures drop, remember:

🐾 Limit outdoor time — Even a few minutes can be risky in subzero wind chills.
🐾 Bring pets indoors — If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.
🐾 Watch for frostbite & hypothermia — Pale paws, shivering, or lethargy are red flags.
🐾 Wipe paws after walks — Ice melt and packed snow can burn or irritate skin.
🐾 Check outdoor cats — Knock on your hood before starting your car; cats seek warmth in engines.
🐾 Provide shelter for community pets — A dry, insulated space with straw (never blankets or hay!) can save a life.

This weekend’s weather is life‑threatening for animals left outside. Please help us spread the word so every pet in Gage County stays safe, warm, and protected.

Stay safe, stay warm, and give your pets an extra cuddle for us at Beatrice Humane Society. 🧣🐶🐱

Oh Puppy! From dumped overnight in a box to thriving, squishy, squeal inducing, cuteness, these puppies are ready for their next step in their journey to adopted.... new foster homes!

These puppies 6 weeks old now and need foster homes for 2-3 more weeks! Ideally placed in pairs or trios, these little guys and gals will keep you busy, but in turn your home will give them critical attention and socialization to help them get adoption ready! The best part about fostering is that if (or when) you fall in love, you get the first opportunity to adopt, your friends and family get the next opportunity and all puppies that aren't spoken for will be available on our website for our normal adoption processes in 2-3 weeks. That's right, there's no holds, no pre-application, no way to ensure you get to adopt one of these cuties EXCEPT for agreeing to be their foster and helping them and one or two siblings along their journey towards adoption. So, without further ado... step right up and apply at the link below if you haven't fostered before or send us a message if you have fostered before! These adorable babies won't last long.
https://www.beatricehumanesociety.org/get-involved/foster.html

P.S. We obviously have no idea what breed mom or dad are, and American Dumped Box Puppy isn't a breed recognized by the AKC. But.... we do suspect they will be large breed, they have grown quickly and based off their current weights and growth we would estimate they will end up in the 50-75 # range. Don't be mad at us if we are wrong, we are using the same online adult dog weight calculators you can access with a quick google search🤣🤣

Feel free to guess their breed(s) below, share this post with a friend, or tag a significant other to show them the new babies you want to foster!

Pupdate- much like we expected .. it only took her ONE meet and greet to convince a family to fall in love. Sadly, it took over 2 months to find that one family though!! We refuse to focus on that though and instead want to focus on the exciting news that Hattie has been adopted!!!

Hattie- At 45 pounds, this mixed‑breed bully blend is the perfect size for full‑body hugs, which she gives freely and often. Hattie is gentle, affectionate, and wonderfully social — she loves other dogs and is polite enough that she’ll likely do well with cats too.
She’s the kind of dog who would rather melt into your lap than bark at a stranger. But with her wise, old‑soul awareness, Hattie knows that some people won’t look past her breed to see the soft, snuggly heart she carries. So she’s holding out hope for just one open‑minded person — someone willing to meet her, even briefly. Because that’s all it will take. One moment, one hello, and Hattie will show you exactly who she is: gentle, loving, and ready to be your loyal companion.
If you’re willing to give her that chance, Hattie is ready to give you her whole heart.

Can we get all of our bully blend lovers to give this girl a comment or a share? Someone out there is looking for a good girl just like her and we want to make sure they find her!!!

Pet of the Day!
Tabitha is a 2-year-old spayed brown‑and‑black shorthaired beauty found herself out of time at a partner shelter, but even in the midst of uncertainty, her sweetness never wavered. Tabitha is soft in every way — her markings, her voice, her heart. She loves quiet company, cozy naps, and slow, reassuring pets that make her purr like a tiny engine. Tabitha is the kind of cat who blossoms with kindness. She’s looking for a calm, loving home where she can feel safe, adored, and finally exhale. If you’re searching for a gentle soul to bring peace and warmth into your life, Tabitha is ready to curl up and love you forever.
Can you give her some shares to help her find her permanent lap to sleep on? Is it yours?
