Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

I travel a good bit throughout the year, and most of the time my clients think it's because I'm on vacation. That (unfortunately) couldn't be further from the truth. So what am I doing during all these travels? Well, as a food animal specialist and leader within the realm of food animal practice in the United States, I play a pivotal role in educating veterinarians and veterinary students. As one of only 28 food animal specialists board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Food Animal Practice) and an award-winning speaker, I am sought after for national speaking engagements. Also, as President of the American Association of Small Ruminants, I work to provide education and opportunities on small ruminants (sheep and goats), camelids (llamas, alpacas, camels), and cervids (white-tailed deer, mostly) to my fellow veterinarians and veterinary students.

I'm honored to serve in these roles, and proud to be a specialist. I am also grateful to my clients for allowing me to contribute to my profession, and I love returning from each trip with new knowledge that helps me be a better practitioner for my clientele and a better teacher to my students. Veterinary medicine is truly the greatest profession, and I am very privileged to be a part of it!

Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

Last post for the Spectacular Summer Students! This last group, my Thursday and Friday crew, included Hailey Madison (UD '30), Marleigh Ballard (UD '27), Emily Rodriguez (Cornell '28), Nora Stashefski (UD '27), and Christina Caniglia (Rowen University Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine '29). Also pictured: Karley White (UD '28) and Abril Barrientos (Hodgson Vo-Tech High School '30).

Four State Veterinary Services has been open for just shy of 3 years, and in that time, 84 students have ridden in the truck (or the Nissan, for those OG people!). That number continues to rise as we anticipate the arrival of the fall UD interns and many veterinary externs throughout the coming year. What an honor and a privilege it is to have the opportunity to impact so many young minds!

Fall is upon us (FINALLY!). Get ready for cool weather, pumpkin everything, and spooky season!! 🍂😍👻🎃

Spectacular Summer Student Post Number 3! So many I had to split it up into a few posts this year!

Part of my Wednesday and Thursday crew was made up of Ash Dougherty (UD '28), Allie Krauthauser (UD '27), Karley White (UD '28), and Callie Juliano (UConn '28).

Fun Fact: Dr. Mike was awarded the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award in 2023 while on faculty at Mississippi State University. Student training will always be a strong pillar of the practice for Four State Veterinary Services!

Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

Spectacular Summer Student Post 2! The Monday and Tuesday crew featuring Jax Kuoma (UD '27), Carly Pierson (University of Maryland '27), Julia Kelly (University of Maryland '27), and Hannah Goss (UD '27). Not pictured: Erin Kuzminski (UD '28) and Grace Plut (UD '26).

While Carly and Julia are the first University of Maryland students to join the truck, there have been 36 University of Delaware students (and counting!) to grace the practice! This is mostly due to Four State Veterinary Services' involvement with the University of Delaware internship program, where students are able to gain valuable in-field experience during the school year. This coming fall, three more UD students will join in the fun! College students interested in applying to veterinary school are required to have veterinary experience hours, with the average applicant having around 300 hours. These hours are sometimes hard to come by, with practices being busy, lacking staff or infrastructure to support students, and the competitive nature of finding experiences. Four State Veterinary Services strives to accommodate as many students as possible to provide a meaningful, high-quality experience with food and fiber animals!

Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

There will be a few posts over the next week to celebrate the spectacular summer students of 2026! This first post is dedicated to the final veterinary extern of the summer, Quinn Richards! Quinn, a native of Lewes, DE, is a rising 3rd-year at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Between the 90-degree weather and thick humidity, we hope Quinn had a blast during the busy show season!

To date, Four State Veterinary Services has hosted veterinary students from Penn Vet, Mississippi State University, Louisiana State University, Iowa State University, The Ohio State University, North Carolina State University, Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera (in Spain), Western University of Health Sciences, University of Illinois, and Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (Virginia Tech). The 2026-2027 school year will bring more externs from even more schools! Interested in an externship in the BEST part of the country with a board-certified food animal practitioner? Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

A long overdue post! It's been California on the mind lately, with AVMA in Anaheim last week, and now a shout-out to the students who have traveled the farthest to join Four State Veterinary Services on the road! The future Drs. Claire Woo and Kayla Rogers, both California natives, came all the way to Delaware to gain some experience and appreciate why the East Coast truly is the best coast 😁! Both Claire and Kayla will graduate from Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine in Pomona, California in 2028. They made their school proud and are always welcome back for more East Coast adventures!!

Four State Update! Learn more about Four State Veterinary Services!

It's been a minute since I've made a post! Summer is in full swing as we prepare for all the county fairs and state fairs, so of course, I've got to add in some travel! As many of you know, I try to stay involved in the veterinary profession as a whole, especially as a food and fiber animal specialist. Many of you also know I'm long-winded and LOVE to talk 😆. This weekend, I had the opportunity to give some presentations to my colleagues at the American Veterinary Medical Association's Annual Convention and talk about all things alpaca, llama, sheep, goat, pig, and cattle!

Education is a pillar of my practice- for students, clients, and colleagues alike. I am eternally grateful for my fantastic clients who understand the value of education. Not only do you allow me to bring students to your farms and homes, but you also continue to show immense patience as I try to educate other veterinarians in food and fiber animal practice! I couldn't do it without you all!
