What does dog socialization actually mean? I think this is one of those terms dog owners hear constantly, but people are often talking about very different things when they use it.

For some people, socialization means letting their dog meet lots of other dogs and people. For others, it means helping their dog learn how to stay calm around dogs, people, noises, new environments, different surfaces, busy places, and everyday situations without necessarily interacting with any of them.

With Lincoln, I’ve started thinking much more about confidence and neutrality. I don’t need him to greet every dog or love every person. I want him to be able to notice what is happening around him, stay regulated, and move through the world without feeling like he has to react to or participate in everything.

That shift has changed how I think about our walks, training sessions, public outings, dog-friendly places, and even just sitting somewhere and watching the world go by.

So I’m curious how other dog owners think about this: What does “socialization” mean to you?

Where can you find dog training classes in Fairfax County? Fairfax County Park Authority offers puppy classes, dog obedience, competitive agility, trick training, K9 nose work, rally obedience, and other dog activities through Parktakes Online. Search under the Pet Place category, then compare locations, schedules, prerequisites, and available seats. This is where I found Lincoln’s agility classes at South Run Rec Center, and I had no idea Fairfax County offered this many options before we started looking. Would you try a county-run dog class?

Is Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve dog friendly? Yes — and Lincoln and I already can’t wait to go back. 🐾

If you’re looking for dog-friendly hiking trails in Northern Virginia or Loudoun County, Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve near Leesburg is such a good option.

There are miles of trails to explore, and we loved how well marked everything was. We grabbed a trail map at the beginning because cell service can drop off in spots, then made our way down toward the creek before stopping at the pond for a quiet break on one of the benches.

We got there early, not long after opening, and had a lot of the trails to ourselves. By the time we headed back to the car around 10, more and more people were arriving — so if you want a peaceful morning walk, go early.

A few things to know before bringing your dog:
🐾 Dogs should stay leashed
🐾 Bring your own water
🐾 Be prepared to carry your p**p bags out
🐾 Grab or download a trail map before you head too far in

We only explored a small part of Banshee Reeks this time, so there are plenty more trails for Lincoln and me to come back and try.

This feels like the perfect spot for a crisp, cool autumn morning walk with your dog. 🍂

What does socializing a dog actually mean? Dog socialization isn’t just letting your dog play with other dogs at a dog park. For us, it can also look like Lincoln calmly watching kids run, bicycles pass, people move around, and everyday life happen from a comfortable distance.

Especially with a high-drive Giant Schnauzer, I want him learning that he can notice what’s happening around him without needing to interact with everything he sees. Sometimes the goal isn’t “go say hi.” Sometimes the goal is simply being able to exist calmly in the world.

Your dog may need something completely different, but this is one way we work on socialization with Lincoln outside of the dog park.

Would your dog love FAST CAT?

It’s one of the easiest dog sports to try because there’s very little training involved, your dog basically just needs to run and chase. Mixed-breed dogs can participate too. White Post, Virginia is our favorite FAST CAT spot near Northern Virginia.

If your dog still has energy after a long walk, the answer isn’t always a longer walk.

That’s something I’ve learned living with a high-energy working breed.

Physical exercise matters, but tiring out a dog can also mean giving their brain a job. For Lincoln, that might look like:

🐾 A training session where he has to focus and think
🐾 Scent work or letting him use his nose to search for something
🐾 Food puzzles, frozen enrichment, or making him work a little for his meals
🐾 Practicing obedience somewhere distracting
🐾 Learning a new skill or revisiting one we’re still working on
🐾 Exploring a new environment instead of walking the exact same route
🐾 Structured play that involves impulse control and engagement with me
🐾 And yes, sometimes just practicing how to settle and do absolutely nothing

I used to think “tire out the dog” mostly meant more miles, more running, more physical activity.

But especially with a high-energy dog or working breed, you can accidentally just build a dog who is incredibly fit and still looking at you like, Okay…what are we doing next? 😂

I’m learning that there’s a difference between simply exercising Lincoln and giving him the combination of physical exercise, mental stimulation, training, sniffing, problem-solving, and downtime that actually seems to fulfill him.

And honestly, some of our shortest training or enrichment sessions seem to wear his brain out more than a much longer walk.

Every dog is different, but if you have a dog who seems impossible to tire out, it might be worth thinking beyond just adding another mile.
