Tis the season for skunks!
After having several phone calls and dogs in recently that have been sprayed. My own personal dog included 😵💫. I thought this would be a perfect time to share some tips for you all. You never think it could happen to you, until it does. So save this and thank me later 🙃
With so many products out there and home remedies (that dont help) they only mask the smell prolonging the dreaded smell that does inevitably linger for months. These tips will help lessen the blow greatly. I promise.
○ Once you get over the initial panick that your dog did in fact get hit. Let reality set in that your day just got a whole lot worse (because it usually always happens super early in the morning). Go ahead, cry a little. The tears are valid. But you gotta get it together and act fast
○ You are not. I repeat, you are NOT going to get your dogs wet ‼️‼️‼️ this is so important. So many think hosing them off will help. When you're actually about it make it a whole lot worse. You are basically locking in those oils into your dogs skin. Dont do it!
○ Instead you are going to keep these 3 things on hand at all times so you are well prepared.
Baking soda, dawn dish soap, hydrogen peroxide. Yes, this and only this is the key to success. You will mix the 3 until it makes a paste. You are then going to find where on the dog was sprayed and lather that stuff on. Be so careful around the eyes!!!! Let it sit for a bit. I say like 5-10 min depending on how bad it is. Rinse and repeat a few times.
○ If you notice your dogs eyes are super sensitive from being sprayed. You can flush them out with saline solution. Just be careful. Your dogs already having a rough day too 🫠
Thats it. There's no magic product on the market that will do what that can do to initially help just how bad the smell is right after. Your groomer can only do so much. Getting them groomed helps. The products in the store for deskunking helps. But it will really only mask the smell. And yes, you will still get whiffs of it especially when they get wet for months to come but this remedy will help a ton. If you've had skunks in your yard in the past, I highly suggest checking your yard before you let your dogs out in the morning this time of year and in the spring especially.
Hope this helps! Happy Friday!
