This Bald Eagle’s journey back to the wild began in February, when she was found injured by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) New Orleans. Their team rescued her and helped get her transferred to us for care.
She arrived with a challenging radius and ulna fracture very close to the joint. We initially managed the fracture with coaptation (bandaging) because of the precarious location, but after she refractured the wing several weeks later, our orthopedic surgery team stepped in to help with surgical fixation.
After months of healing, rehabilitation, beautiful flights in our flight cages—and one final delay while we treated a toe injury—she was finally ready.
Early August, we returned her to the wild, where the Coast Guard team who originally rescued her, along with their families and friends, joined us to watch her fly free. And she did not disappoint! 🦅❤️

Next up on our Resident Spotlight series is ✨Bruce✨, our other resident Red-tailed Hawk!

Bruce arrived to WHL as a juvenile in February 2022 after being brought in by animal control.

Upon arrival, Bruce had suffered some serious injuries, including fractures to his left radius and ulna and right femur. After surgery, his left wing unfortunately became infected and ultimately had to be amputated. Since he can no longer fly, Bruce now enjoys life as a resident in our program!💜💛

Fun fact: Red-tailed Hawks don’t get their iconic red tail feathers until they are about a year old. Bruce’s first red tail feather came in August 2022!♥️

Bruce has a fun personality and is extremely food-motivated, which definitely keeps everyone on the team on their toes!🦅

Happy Friday! Introducing our resident, Cypress!💜💛

Cypress is a Barred Owl who was admitted to our hospital in February 2025 after being found in a good samaritan's backyard. Cypress arrived with a severe fracture and dislocation of the right elbow that could not be repaired. After a wing amputation at the elbow joint and a full recovery, Cypress joined our Raptor Rehabilitation Program in April 2025 to begin training as a resident ambassador.

Cypress was trained by Abigail Gunby using positive reinforcement with the “yes” marker, a method that uses rewards and encouragement to help animals learn new behaviors while building trust between the trainer and ambassador. Now, he helps educate the public about Louisiana's incredible native wildlife.🌿

Known for a calm demeanor, Cypress is always observant, making him a wonderful ambassador for the species. Whether perched quietly during presentations or keeping a watchful eye on his surroundings, Cypress has a way of captivating audiences!

Fun fact: Barred Owls are famous for their distinctive call, often remembered as, "Who cooks for you?” 🎶🦉

“Hey y’all! My name is Adeline and I’m going into my second year as a raptor co-chair. Over the last year, I have learned so much about the wildlife in Louisiana and have been given so many opportunities to educate the public. Talking to the community during presentations is a highlight of my co-chair experience. As I move into this next year, I am excited to work with Kirsten to serve as the social media co-chairs to highlight the wonderful birds I have the honor of working with. So excited to see what this year will hold!“

“Hi! My name is Abigail Gunby and I’m a second year from Denham Springs, Louisiana. I am so excited to serve as our Presentation Head Co-Chair. I joined this team last year knowing public speaking was not my favorite, but I have become a number one fan. It brings me so much joy seeing the community get excited about conservation and wanting to do what’s best to protect our local wildlife. I cannot wait to lead this team, alongside my other fellow head co-chair, and to continue to build the strong dedication and sisterhood that makes it so special (of course, the birds also make it so special). “Hi everyone! I’m a second year from Memphis, TN, and I am so excited to serve as our Scheduling Head Co-Chair! I wanted to be a Head Co-Chair to be more involved with the program. I also enjoy problem solving and working closely with the team and the other head co-chair, Abigail, to make sure the birds are taken care of and that the team feels comfortable around one another.
