Sometimes young dogs lack confidence and skills around other dogs. Should they approach slowly, should they just jump on another dog to play. Should they rush up and smell another dog all over? The decision a dog makes can have consequences. It doesn’t always go as planned.
Not all approached dogs want to meet, play, or be sniffed. A young happy go lucky dog may believe any dog is a potential playmate. Unfortunately as dogs become adults that is not always the case.
It is important to teach a young dog proper manners. To exist and be around other dogs calmly. It may turn into play and it may not.

Let’s talk Resource Guarding. When a dogs desires overshadow it’s good judgement. Even relatively good dogs can have a problem with food, toys, people and places.

“Don’t get near my bone” “Don’t try and move me off the couch” “I want what the other dog has, even if I have the same thing” “Dont get near my person”

When you have multiple dogs this is often where fights begin. One dog pushes the issue and the other dog doesn’t back down.
This causes injury and can be very serious!

Another situation can be an only dog that is guarding an owner from everyone else. “ Don’t get near my owner she’s mine” Unsuspecting people can easily get bitten with this scenario.

I have seen a number of RG (resource guarding) situations lately. It tends to be common with dogs who are foodies. Also dogs that are not given boundaries related to owners. Their bratty behaviors are indulged and they are overly needy.

Rules definitely need to be changed, movement controled, place taught and enforced. Stop giving in and hold your dog accountable. This isn’t a quick fix situation, you are changing established rules and creating new ones. That takes time but compared to what could happen it is worth it! 🐾

Meet Sky and Boo. Each come with their own issues. Sky is obsessed with her female owner and has high anxiety when she is 2 ft. away. Once her owner leaves, and I am training I actually see a somewhat normal dog. There is definitely a relationship issue here. She is way over indulged and has been allowed to carry on as she does. There is a lot to accomplish with this one.

Boo is a nervous little boy, and not very confident. He trys to keep what makes him uncomfortable away by barking and growling. That way he doesn’t have to deal with it. It is uncomfortable to have company in the house when boo is constantly barking at them. Boo has to learn his owner is in charge of who comes in the house. Not his job! He’s a sweet little guy just needs some rules to follow.
