Cincinnati shelter struggles with distemper outbreak.

Cincinnati Animal Care Community Engagement Manager Ray Anderson said the shelter euthanized 25 dogs last week after canine distemper virus was detected in the shelter's canine population, and the facility has limited admissions and adoptions as a result. Dogs that have been medically cleared are allowed to be fostered or adopted, and intakes are temporarily being housed off-site to protect them from the virus.

The best prevention is keeping your dogs up to date on their vaccinations. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk. Symptoms include:
-eye/nasal discharge
-fever
-respiratory signs
-gastrointestinal signs
-neurologic signs
-thickened paw pads

Distemper is an airborne infection spread mainly by coughing and sneezing, but can also be from sharing food/water bowls. Distemper is often fatal and is very serious virus.

Heartworms aren't detectable in infected dogs and cats until the larvae are about six months old and the animal's body produces a detectable level of antigens, which is why veterinarians recommend keeping pets on preventive medication year-round. Treating an active case of heartworm disease in dogs is expensive and takes a physical toll on the animal, and there is no approved treatment for cats with heartworm disease

A tale of two dogs.
On a cold February day, two dogs greeted the morning in very different ways. One dog, Teddy, was ecstatic to frolic in the snow. Just look at the smile on his face! The other dog, Goose, wanted to see if we have developed indoor plumbing for dogs yet. You can see how unhappy he is with me that I allowed the snow to stay! Dont worry, he was very happy to snuggle in his soft, warm bed!

It is with great appreciation that we would like to announce that after 28 years at Animal Wellness Hospital and 31 years as a veterinarian, Dr. Michelle Hendricks will be retiring.
Dr. Michelle Hendricks will be pulling back and focusing on her family. As all 3 daughters will be in college, she plans to travel with her husband, Duane, in their RV. Their goal is to visit all of the National Parks.
After opening Animal Wellness Hospital in 1993, Dr Hendricks has been dedicated to providing the best care for all of her patients. She has enjoyed caring for your beloved pets and watching your families grow.
You may still see her from time to time in the office, but she is stepping away knowing that Animal Wellness Hospital is in great hands. We will continue to provide high quality care with the doctors and staff.
We would like to thank Dr Hendricks for her hard work and contributions to veterinary medicine, Animal Wellness Hospital, and to our beloved pets. She is a true example of a great veterinarian, mother, wife, and friend. She will be greatly missed, however, we are so happy for her as she begins the next journey of her life.

A message from Dr. Hendricks:
Becoming a veterinarian is all I ever wanted to do. Veterinary medicine has never failed to disappoint. Since graduating I have been able to be a wife, mother, build and grow a business all because of my profession veterinary medicine.
Animal Wellness Hospital and all of you have been my friends and extended family for over half of my life. We have laughed and cried together, celebrated and mourned. It has been a privilege to care for your four footed fur babies. I am honored and blessed. Thank you for the love and trust you have shown me.
